“Rather enjoyable”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

OK, this is not the best hotel in the area, but it isn't a bad place to stay. Downsides first: It is just outside town and doesn't really have a restaurant, so you'll have to get into town (or eat at a place on the road into town). This is easily walkable or a very short drive. It is a little dated.

Upsides: Clean and comfortable enough, good breakfast and fabulous birds and some other wildlife in the grounds. The pool wasn't bad either. As part of a group we were treated to a meal in the breakfast area on our first night.

I dont often write reviews, but our recent experience last week was pretty awful. Hotel site looks like a 70' s campsite. The room was very dated and very small for the price. As others have said, the shower is horrendous. Breakfast area felt like a garage and the food was merely okay. We had a few friends staying in other hotels in the area for about the same price and their experiences were incredibly better than ours. Unless they really lower their prices, pls stay somewhere else.

One pro - you can walk to town from here.

We stayed here for 4 nights and rented 4 rooms. I think the price was around $225 for each room for the 4 nights and had breakfast included, also air conditioning, wifi and tv (although these were older models, not the flat screen ones seen in pictures). I thought the breakfast was above average because they did offer so much-rice/beans; pancakes; ham and eggs. We would have preferred fresh juice over the tang, but other that no complaints. The staff here are all very nice and accomodating and they will help you book tours if you want. It is outside of la fortuna. We did walk in a few times, took about 10 minutes, we did not mind the walk. We were traveling with older family members who did not seem to want to walk this, but there is a sidewalk most of the way. There also are two restaurants right near the hotel, right on the main road on the way to town (previous reviewer must have missed this, they are very easily walkable). We went to El Establo and had some drinks which were great/cheap, and bartender super nice! They also have food (we had already ate) and are kind of a rodeo place-think the Costa Rican Texas Road house. I really liked the location because it was close to town but out of town so quieter.
The bungalows are cute, but rooms are small and you may find a few bugs that have snuck in, but you are in a rainforest area, so really to be expected. There were two beds in the room, we are a couple and chose to sleep in different beds bc use to bigger ones and wasn't as comfortable with both in one. The pool are is kept very nice and is quite large considering size of hotel.

We got a 2 night reservation here as part of a large package so I cannot comment on the price. The staff was very friendly and always helpful. The grounds are nice and we'll kept. The hotel is a very environment friendly business which is what got it the better rating. Our room came with wifi, a/c, and a tv from 1995. We didn't come to watch tv but when winding down to go to bed the picture was was pretty bad. As others have mentioned the shower is impossible to regulate. The hotel recognizes this and left a sign in the shower to assist. I was very patient and diligent in trying to regulate it for about 15 minutes and it just wouldn't work. If you have a wife that needs to wash long hair beware of foul language. The very poor placement of the shower head aimed it right at the base of the shower curtain and pushed it out of the shower every time. Needless to say the bathroom floor was a puddle very time. Breakfast was a good variety as mentioned by the business below. The beds were pretty uncomfortable but the pillows were nice. The windows did not have screens on them which is quite common. Just expect a few lizards/bugs if you keep them open. If you don't have your own transportation I recommend another hotel as there is nothing in walking distance aside from a low income neighborhood that our gps initially took us into. If it came down to it I would look elsewhere. If you are on a budget and can look past a few things this may be the place for you.

Although the hotel grounds were beautiful and the rooms clean, I would not recommend this hotel. Upon check in we were asked if we wanted the remotes for the tv and the air conditioner. There is a $10 a day charge for air conditioning. The shower could not be regulated. The breakfast, although hot, was the same each day. The rooms are small.

Dear Customer:

Arenal Country Inn does include the use of the air conditioning in regular rates. However, the rate at which you agreed was a Super Special rate, as you may know because of the actual rate you were charged. In order for these rates to be available to the consumers, we must lower operating costs and limit some of the regular services –this is precisely the marvel of low budget rates: you only pay for the services you want to use, any additional services are at a premium. Now, even with the Super Special rate, you received free Wi-Fi 24 hours a day, and the complementary use of the refrigerator, among other additional services.

In regards to breakfast, I am sorry, but I don’t understand your comments. You, and all your travel companions were offered two types of fruit, juice, coffee, tea, milk, bread, jam, butter, cereal, gallo pinto, eggs and ham, and/or scrambled eggs, pancakes and sweet plantain. The average stay in the area is two to three nights. The variety of dishes is designed to reduce the repetition in the customer’s menu.

We deeply regret your perception that the “value for your money” did not reflect on your satisfaction.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Arenal Country Inn for about 6 nights this summer with a group of college students who were studying abroad here in Costa Rica. We stayed at hotels all over the place in the country but this was one of my favorites. The bungalows were nice and close to one another and the staff was very welcoming. All meals that we had here were delicious and authentic! There isn't much of a night life around here besides one bar that's about 10 minutes walking distance. And if you have a car you should definitely visit the Hot Springs that are near by. Loved this place - thanks to the staff!

I visited this hotel as part of a College of Charleston study abroad experience and was very impressed. The cabins are spread out so you dont feel cramped at all. The have amenities like breeakfast, a pool, a pool table, and internet. It is tucked away in the cozy town of La Fortuna and within walking distance to town.
