“We felt we had arrived in Paradise!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2010

This was myself, boyfriend and 2 11 year old boys. We had an amazing time at this hotel. We had previously been staying in a lodge in Tortugero so this was like walking into paradise. Our room was fabulous. Great view of the Volcano and close to the pools and hot springs. To get into any of the hot springs in the other hotels is expensive so pay a tiny bit extra to stay here over one of the other hotels in the area.

We had one of our best vacations at Kioro. Most friendly staff. The view of the volcano is just incredible. All the view of the greenery around the rooms was so relaxing and refreshing, we walked away with a vacation we'll never forget. Great location - lots of things to see and do, in and around La Fortuna. Overall a memorable experience!!

We stayed at the Kioro for 4 nights and got very lucky with clear views of the volcano for all 4 days. Our room was so close to the volcano that one morning our windows shook upon an eruption. The views of the volcano from our room were incredible. Also the grounds are very nicely maintained and beautiful. The room was clean and my teenagers loved the different animal-shaped towels left on our beds every night. They also got a kick out of sitting in the room hottub and watching the volcano. The food was very good. and the hotel provided a fresh & hearty breakfast. However we did venture into town for several of our meals and excursions. A round-trip into town was approximately $30 so I would recommend renting a car once you arrived into Arenal. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The front-staff was very attentive. The only downsides, besides the distance into town, was that the hot springs broke down while there. Also the common areas' furniture seating could use some updating. It is starting to look very worn.

Arenal Kioro was our second hotel to stay in during our vacation to Costa Rica. Let me start by saying Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful countries I have travelled to. The people are nothing but friendly and there is so much to do! We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights. The views of the active volcano are amazing. Your entire suite's windows face the volcano. This volcano erupts frequently and being 3K from the summit you see it all. They also offer the use of their hot springs and pool which are on the grounds. There are trails to walk on, tons of wildlife about. Service was outstanding in all areas, restaurant, bars, transfers, etc...
We went into LaFortuna one night and had a blast. Great souvenier stores, authentic Costa Rican food, and great people. My son was amazed at all the dogs that roam around Costa Rica. All were friendly.
I also recommend taking one of the white water rafting trips. We took one down the Balsa, pretty mild class II and III. About 3 hours but tons of fun. We were then treated to lunch in one of the local restaurants.
This is one destination I will go back to!

This hotel was in one of the most beautiful settings I have seen. The view from your window is the active arenal volcano. The grounds around it are lush and beautiful as well. The rooms are very spacious. There is a spa in your bedroom and a separate desk area. This was my favorite hotel in Costa Rica. My one and only complaint was that the beds were very firm.

I would highly recommend the Arenal Kioro property. We stayed there in mid-March 2010. Five adults in our mid-30's to early 40's plus a 15 year old and a 12 year old. We had three rooms in the 800 building. As best I could tell, each building consists of four suites; two upstairs and two downstairs. My boyfriend and I had the upstairs room while the rest of our party had the two downstairs rooms. I much preferred our upstairs room for the high vaulted ceiling, elevated view of the lush gardens, and the later complaint of one of my downstairs traveling partners that a herd of elephants had apparently moved into the suite next to ours (and over his).

Another reviewer wrote a nice review of check-in, so I won't go into that here but it was very seamless. We really enjoyed the breakfast buffet every morning and also had one lunch on property that was very good. The 12 year old and I had spaghetti and meatsauce; the rest of the gang opted for the typical Costa Rica meal. This involved salad, chicken, beans, and rice. Everyone agreed they'd order the same things again. After we had dinner elsewhere we also went back to the on property restaurant for dessert one night. Everyone seemed very pleased with these also. The staff does tend to give you very small glasses for soda and juice by default, but if you ask for a larger glass to preclude multiple refill trips they are happy to oblige.

The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. The hot springs are fabulous. No reason to fight the crowds we saw when we drove by the public springs nearby as we had private ones in "our own backyard." While the paths are fairly well lit at night, you may want to bring a small flashlight to boost the lighting a bit for late night strolls to the hot springs and pool.

One person in our party with back trouble did find the beds a bit hard. We had no problems with it. The suites could easily sleep 5 between the two double beds and the single, which is more like a daybed.

The in room jacuzzi was very nice. Our only complaint is that the water level was very full and the staff didn't seem to understand our request to lower the water level. So we used the ice bucket to scoop out enough water that we could get in without sloshing water all over the floor.

The room had a safe and a fridge as well as robes. I would absolutely stay here again if I were returning to the area.

First of all I read most of the tripadvisor reviews after we arrived at the Arenal Kioro. Like many others, upon check-in we were warmly greeted at the open air reception area which had a fantastic view of surrounding lush vegetation typical of Costa Rica. We were treated to a complimentary beverage and all check-in occured while sitting in comfortable sofas while enjoying the view. This experience was very similar to the check in style at the Mauna Lani Hotel and Resorts on the Big Island of Hawaii. Although we arrived earlier than the check-in time, we were able to go to our rooms without waiting. Upon arrive they had 2 rooms reserved for us for a family of 2 adults and one child. Obviously there was some miscommunication between our travel agent, travel agency and the hotel and we only required one room. Our host helped us correct this problem with long distance calls (x3) to California, etc., without any additional charges or penalties.

The rooms were large with 2 queen beds and a separate twin bed behind a low walled partition perfect for a child or young adult to sleep in. The room could easily accomodate 4 adults and one child. It had floor to ceiling windows/sliding doors which framed the huge volcano. Literally, this hotel is at the base of Arenal volcano. We did get a glimpse of the entire volcano including the cone for a brief period of time but mostly during our stay the cone and at time the entire volcano was covered in clouds. There is also an indoor jaccuzi which we did not utilize. The rooms were very quite at night even though we did have some guests staying in the adjacent room (There are 4 rooms to a bulding).

The ground were beautifully landscaped and filled with all types of tropical flora very similar to those found in Hawaii. The swimming pool was large enough to do lap swims and kept heated so it was very comfortable to swim at night. The ground also has a multilevel (7?) cascading "hot spring" with jacuzzi pools at each level offering very private soakings in the comfortably warm pools. The rockscape and design of this waterfall/jacuzzi was well done and appeared very natural. We went at night on two occasions and we were the only ones there enjoying the warm jets from the jacuzzi pools. We also had a chance to visit the Kioro owned Titoku Hot Springs just outside of La Fortuna. Admission was complimentary for hotel guest and hotel provided shuttle was only $5 for the entire family. They also provided free lockers for our belongings. The locker room, private changing areas and the entire facility was very new and clean. They also had cascading waterfalls but the entire site is very narrow in width and the rockscape was more generic and less appealing than that at the hotel. The landscaping was very lush and colorful. We did enjoy a few hours there and the people there were very kind and friendly.

After reading the reviews of the hotel restaurant, we decided to only have their complimentary breakfast there. The breakfast was very good, especially the made to order omelettes. The selections varied daily and everyone found something good to eat each day. Since the Arenal Kioro is about 11 km from La Fortuna which is the closet main town, we took a taxi there and back for dinners which ran about 6600 colones or $13 each way. We were very fortunate to have found an honest, english speaking Costa Rican (tico) young man who unlike other taxi drivers did not hesitate in turning on his meter. He works for Arenal Taxi which is the main (only) taxi company in that area. In fact over the 3 days that we were in Arenal, we use him (Dennis V.) exclusively for our dinner runs and even a trip to La Fortuna Waterfalls. He picked us at the Tikoku Hot Springs and took us to the falls, then came back for us at a preset time, dropped us off at our desired dinner location and picked us up when we call him on is cell. He was our very personal chauffeur!!! We were please since he was honest and we can communicate with him and he was happy to have our repeat business. With his permission his number is 8388-23-32. I for one like to help and promote the honest Costa Ricans who helpt tourist like ourselves and if you read a couple of my other posts, like to warn fellow tourists of those in CR who tries to take advantage.

Overall, the Arenal Kioro is a wonder place to stay, the service great, the personnel friendly and helpful and we had no "surprises" when we checked out.
