“A Jungle Paradise”
Reviewed 3 January 2009

The Treehouses hotel is an amazing three tree house "hotel" situated on 80+ acres of beautiful Costa Rican jungle. My wife and I stayed three days and wished we could have stayed longer. We are already planning a return trip with friends this summer.

Raeann could not have been a better host. She prebooked all of our trips and adventures. She had the scoop on the best adventure companies, and each guide we had was just stellar.

Each morning we awoke to the sound of howler monkeys in the nearby trees. We walked down to the main lodge where Raeann served us a different breakfast each day. At least 50 gorgeous hummingbirds surrounded us as we ate our delicious meal. Many other colorful birds flew around the various feeders placed near the main lodge. After breakfast, Raeann went over the itinerary for the activities she'd set up for us.. She helped us navigate all around the area in our rental car.

My wife and I hiked the property pretty extensively. It is absolutely beautiful. The main trail leads down to the river and a pretty waterfall. It's very private and quiet.

I can not say enough good things about this place. Raeann was a pleasure to meet and she made my wife and my honeymoon more fun as she had great ideas of where to go (if you have a car, which I highly recommend).

Overall it's an amazing place, and we can't wait to go back again with our friends!

I was surfing the web and looking for some place different to stay for 3 nights en route from San Jose to Playa Grande; it was just by chance (luck?!?) that I happened upon the Tree Houses. I took a chance and we're all glad I did. My husband arrived in CR a few days earlier than the rest of us, so he was able to venture out and find it before the rest of us arrived (2 kids, 12 and 16). We were glad he did, as our flight arrived later in the afternoon and w/ impending darkness and driving rain, it could have been difficult to find. (BTW, Raeann's advice for CR auto travel - ignore the road names; travel from town to town - was right on.) We stayed in Treehouse #3, which with the loft w/ 2 single beds, was perfect for the kids. Tasty breakfasts, drinking coffee and relaxing w/ the other guests, the sloth and birds, and Behuta (sp?!?) were a memorable start to a great visit to CR. And long chats w/ our warm and friendly hosts Raeann and Kelly, were most wonderful. Always one to miss my own dog while away from home, Behuta was a great pal during our walk to the river and waterfall. She even visited us at our treehouse after breakfast one morning. We did several of the tours - volcano hike (interesting and friendly, informative guides) w/ dinner and Baldi hotsprings afterwards(our least favorite part of the tour), and zip line (great adrenaline rush!). We also took the hike to La Fortuna Falls, which was lovely. We were there just before Thanksgiving, so still quite rainy, but hey!, it's the rainforest! Certainly if we ever head back to Costa Rica, we will try to make room for another stay w/ Raeann and Kelly.

My daughter and I stayed at the Tree Houses during our travels to Costa Rica. I had my dates mixed up and we arrived a day early, late at nigh and very tired. Raeann was very gracious and changed our reservation. Kelly even gave us a ride to La Fortuna with a side trip to a local gift shop. To top things off, I had left our Zip Line receipt at the breakfast table and Raeann tracked us down on the road to La Fortuna. The service was off the charts. Our tree house was #2, it was rustic and just beautiful. The only down side is we could hear road traffic, but the beauty of the area shone through. Breakfast was a wonderful experience, sitting on the porch watching all the different birds flying around the feeders. There must have been 50 hummingbirds. Take the time to walk to the waterfall.

We started off our honeymoon at the Tree Houses and it set the tone for the rest of our trip – ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!! From the San Jose airport we took the long route towards La Fortuna to stop and see the Volcan Poa and the amazing waterfall, La Paz, which you can walk under. There were a few other stops we made for food and sightseeing so it took us about 4hrs to get to the Tree Houses. The moment you turn into the driveway, you feel as if you are driving to your own secret garden. Surrounded by all sorts of greenery and beautiful flowers; butterflies full of bright colors seem to greet you as you drive to the main office…and it doesn’t stop there. Park your car and one of your first hellos may be from Banga, the friendliest dog you can imagine. Next you will see the gorgeous humming birds playfully flying as if they were playing tag with one another…yes my mouth dropped too thinking “is this place real or am I dreaming” Raeann and Kelly are wonderful hosts and are full of information about all of Costa Rica – my advice is to ask them for recommendations. It was an absolute delight to wake up in the mornings to super yummy and fresh food plus the pleasant conversations with Kelly, Raeann, and the other guests. As for the rooms; of course they are a little on the smaller side, they are up in the trees! However, it has everything you need – bathroom, shower (bring shampoo), beds, coffee maker, and even a small fridge. We stayed in Tree house #1 which also had AC plus a small fan (I believe they all have this). The trails are incredible; every day we would set off for a hike where we encountered, sloths, Julio (resident howler monkey), poison dart frogs, leaf cutter ants, parrots, butterflies, humming birds, all sorts of wildlife! At the end of one of the trails there is a very nice waterfall with pools where you can cool off from your hike. La Fortuna is about 20min. away along a nicely paved road where they have lots of tours, shops, and food. Although we did stay in La Fortuna for a night, the Tree Houses were our favorite part of the whole trip!

We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay for our first trip to Costa Rica. Nice to have the ammenities of a bathroom and air conditioning while feeling like you were living in the jungle. Lots of wildlife to look at right from the porch, and it was a birdwatchers dream. Reann and Kelly were very helpful in navigating around La Fortuna. The volcano put on a spectacular show while we were there, and would have liked to have had another day before leaving. Would be very happy to stay here again.

Yes, they are really treehouses. They're pretty high up which is nice and there's a wrap around porch for just sitting among the trees. The inside was nice, there's glass all around the room so you can look out, and there was a tree that went through our room as well. The bathroom was on the smallish side, but the room overall was basic/comfortable. When we arrived there were beautiful flowers on the bed and in the bathroom which was a nice touch (but they eventually attracted ants so we put the flowers outside). It was easy to get our laundry done there (washed and folded for 6 bucks). The hosts were informative and helped us book transportation.

Breakfast was included and it was a large, fresh breakfast. We ate our dinners at the restaurant just a few hundred metres down the road, it's called Lomas del Mapache. We highly recommend it. This restaurant was our favorite part about visiting the area. It's run by a Costa Rican family who spoke English and were delightful to talk to. We were pleasantly surprised when our food arrived (the presentation was excellent and the taste even better). You must enjoy a dinner there if you stay at Treehouses. Plus, on a clear night, you can see Arenal from the restaurant.

Mosquitos were sort of bad in the area (we were there in October). Easy to get to from San Jose by bus (you can ask the bus driver to stop right outside the hotel). However, this hotel is not in the heart of La Fortuna/Arenal area. If you rent a car you can easily drive about 30-40 minutes to get there, but if you don't have a car then you can take the bus which takes about an hour or pay $25 for a taxi. At $110 a night, it was a little pricey (especially for the off season)...it was twice as much as we paid for other equally good accommodations that we chose in Costa Rica.

I found this little gem of a place through trip advisor, actually, and am SO glad I did!! It was just perfect. Compact, tidy little tree houses nestled amongst the trees. Raeann and Kelly are delightful and wondeful hosts and I just can't say enough nice things about them, how they run the place and the fantastic services they provide their guests! And of course you can't disregard the amazing breakfasts! Different each morning and filling; eggs, beans, rice, tortillas, fresh coffee, fresh fruit & juice just to name a few!

The walk through the rainforest on their property to the waterfall & river is just wonderful. Yes it's hot, yes it's buggy, but hey, it's Costa Rica!! And it's the tropics. They provide you with mosquito coils to burn on the darling little balconys and the rooms are well screened.

I wish I'd had longer than 2 nights to spend with them!
