“Fantastic!!!”
Reviewed 30 September 2009

My fiance and I went on a whirlwind trip through Costa Rica during the rainy season. The rainy season made our trip even more exciting. There was lots or rain, but there was also lots of sunshine right after the rains, so the rains did not prevent us from getting out and seeing the sights. Hotel Arenal Green was our second stop in Costa Rica. German and his family run an excellent facility. They were very friendly, always accessible and were quick to cater to all our questions and traveling needs. The cabins were very clean and serene. Additionally, for us the hotel was close enough to the waterfall that we choose to walk there (approx. 1.5 miles). We enjoyed the very simple meals that were provided by German's family at their adjoining restaurant. The hotel is about a twenty minute walk from the center of the town La Fortuna but we enjoyed the walks and quite enjoyed the chance the walks gave us to immerse ourselves into the Costa Rica way of life. Extremely enjoyable for anyone who is cool with nature and want a chilled out setting where the staff is not constantly in your face.

German (pronounced Hehr-MAHN) and his family were wonderfully gracious hosts in that they were more than happy to arrange all of our activities and transportation when we arrived, advise us on the local attractions, and chat with us about our stories.

They provided a great deal on a shuttle from the airport (a 2-3 hour ride), which was competitive or cheaper than the larger shuttle companies, and our private driver offered to stop for breakfast, coffee and groceries wherever we wanted. German then arranged our trips to the spa and volcano, flexibly scheduled based on the weather. He even picked us up from our hike with a cooler of beers! Impressive service!

However, all of this personal attention does cost a fair bit, as we did not have our own rental car and so paid for transportation as well. (I'm nearly positive it was still a better deal for us than renting our own car, but beware that although this is a budget hotel, the activities are not cheap.) Note that this is located outside of town and away from all attractions. It's walkable into town and to a fabulous little waterfall, but bring hiking shoes.

The cabinas themselves are lovely, with a functioning A/C and a refrigerator. This is nice because the hotel's restaurant has somewhat sporadic hours, so having snacks on hand is a good idea. If you can catch it for breakfast, though, the traditional plate is fantastic - it's the best pinto gallo we had our whole trip!

This was our third time to La Fortuna but our extended family's first time. We were on a tight budget and this property totally suited our needs-clean, simple, affordable and close to town. The owner German and his family were so accommodating. The cabins were totally clean, well air conditioned and comfortable. The views were nice of Arenal. The property is right off of a main side road and does get a little busy in the early morning but that didn't bother us because we weren't in Costa Rica to sleep in. ;) The breakfast they served was fabulous with bowls of fresh fruit, eggs and awesome coffee. We chose this property upon Tripadvisor's recommendation and once again, they were right on. The only other property we would have stayed at would have been Leaves and Lizards which I give a 5 star rating......stayed there before and would go again. But since my family budget was tight, this fit our needs on this trip.

Our family (two adults and two kids, 11 & 15) just returned from a great Costa Rica trip. We enjoyed two nights at Arenal Green. I asked a hotel proprietor in Monteverde for an authentic place to stay in the La Fortuna/Arenal area and he recommended Arenal Green. We were so happy with the great recommendation! It was nice to be outside of town, yet close enough to walk or take a quick and inexpensive cab ride into town or to other area attractions, such as the hot springs. We enjoyed the walk from Arenal Green to the waterfall and swimming in the river was fantastic. The day we arrived, my husband went to get coffee at the restaurant to bring to our cabin and Herman was kind enough to welcome us by bringing us delicious coffee and a steaming pitcher of hot milk right to our porch. All in all a delightful place to stay while in the area.

Arenal Green is a fantastic place to start your trip. For a small cabin, it was definitely adequiate on space, had a large bathroom and great water preasure on the shower. The rooms were very clean and I slept comfortably the two nights we stayed there. The warmness of German and his staff/family really added to the experience. The breakfast was good too.

Arenal Green was simply delightful. The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms are enormous. German and his daughter Monica made the stay seem as if you were at an old friend's house. My boyfriend and I arrived way before our check in time, but they showed us to our room and helped us book an excursion for later that afternoon. Also, it's close enough to La Fortuna that you can grab a cab for under 4 bucks. If German offers you a ride to see the nearby waterfall, take him up on it! The hike is arduous and completely uphill :)

Arenal Green is located outside La Fortuna on the road to the waterfall - it was about half an hour's walk from town (a bit further than I was expecting) but it was quite humid so we got a taxi a few times and the owner also gave us a lift a couple of times which was really kind. The location would be great if you had your own transport though. We walked up to the waterfalls one afternoon - it was a bit hot going uphill but well worth it, the falls were stunning and the pool at the bottom very refreshing!

The cabins were cute and cosy, with air-con, a handy fridge and sink so we made ourselves sandwiches and breakfast (no equipment though - e.g. cutlery or plates); the shower was the most powerful we came across in Costa Rica which was great. It was very quiet and peaceful there (to the extent that we actually felt a bit uncomfortable on the first night, when we were the only guests, but it was absolutely fine); if you go in the rainy season be warned that it gets very noisy in the cabins when it rains. The staff were friendly but we didn't really see much of them as we didn't really spend much time there - we did a canyoning trip with Pure Trek and a full day canoeing trip to Cano Negro with Canoa Aventura, both of which were excellent if quite expensive.

Unfortunately we didn't see the volcano peak at all while we were there (and hardly saw even the sides of the volcano); we got a cab out to El Castillo one evening to try and see the lava flows but it wasn't clear round there either; it was much further than we expected as well and the road, (once you got off the main road) was pretty rough so it was a bit of an epic journey to go out for dinner!
