Hotel Arenal Montechiari
Certificate of Excellence

OK, it's not a perfect 5 star resort, but I had to give this an "excellent" rating because that's how our overall experience was. We had a car, but I probably wouldn't recommend this place if you are on foot - it seemed far from town to me, which was what we loved about it! The huts actually use a regular key which I thought was so cool. The owners were very nice, admittedly we speak at least adequate Spanish, and I'm sure that was helpful, but it is a Spanish speaking country, after all. They were very helpful on answering our questions about the area, and giving us ideas of places to eat or how long they thought it would get to certain places (our GPS was not all that helpful around here for some reason). The Wifi does only work by the main lobby, but I just went down and uploaded my daily instagram picture to show off to my friends and then went back and relaxed in the room watching my Spanish Disney channel with my teenagers.
Lighting is pretty dim, but we had headlamps for reading. Shower was lacking water pressure, for sure, but it works and the water was hot. Beds are sort of like foam mats, but I actually slept really well. They do have a fridge (you need to plug it in when you get there) which I didn't expect, and even had a little hair dryer in the bathroom. The air conditioner also worked really well, and kept the room at a nice comfy sleeping temperature.
The foliage is beautiful, definitely take your camera with you to breakfast as there were birds out every day - there was even a toucan, a really small toucan, but still... the fruit was good, they had pancakes, toast, and of course, the standard scrambled eggs and beans/rice. OJ was definitely TANG so I didn't have any of that, but the water was good, and the watermelon was so sweet.
If I go back to La Fortuna I wouldn't stay anywhere else. We booked only a few weeks before our trip and I can't believe this place was still available. We loved it.

All in all, I nice place we can recommend and probably would visit again.
The Bungalows are quite big, cozy and seemed very new... but at night all the atmosphere was gone. One very bright lightpulp in the middle. You could not even read when lying in bed. A lamp or even better some low power bed light would make such a difference. Also a picture or accessoir on the wall would look great.
Breakfast was ok... one day, but it is limited and every day exactly the same 3 or 4 fruit, same egg and rice. A little variation would be pleasent, especially when you stay longer. Also starting a bid earlier would be great.

The birds that came to the feeders in the morning were incredible. Breakfast was adequate and is pretty much the same in similar hotels. The cabins were quiet and clean. When we first arrived, I wondered why our cabin was so far away from the office. In the morning I realized it was because they were full. If want a resort, stay in a resort. If you want something more Costa Rican, stay here. Aren't you in Costa Rica? Enjoy it.

This place is perfect for the cost-conscious travel or. The owner is very nice and very helpful. The cabins are quiet, quaint and clean. It is a longer walk to town than expected, but that wasn't much of a factor for us. The pool was clean and nice. We recommend this as a great hotel for most people.

Basics of the huts is ok. End result is poor. Garden is very nice.
Management of the hotel is not ambitious. No info can be obtained. As customer you are a pain in their neck.
Location is ok. The village of La Fortune is a busy location. Tourist offices ask high prices. It is difficult to get an overall picture. The national park can be found but the name plate is difficult to find

Our cabin was clean & updated with a new modern bathroom. There was a TV & plenty of storage space plus the view of Arenal volcano was magnificent. We had a small porch overlooking native plants. the grounds was magnificently tended with flowers blooming throughout plus there was a very nice swimming pool. The staff was friendly & helpful, booking our tours quickly. The breakfasts were hot and seconds liberally taken. It was about a 6 block walk into La Fortuna which is small, lovely town.

Room Tip: We had the second to the last cabin on the end row. Very quiet!

Stayed at Montechiari for just one night and it was quite adorable. The bungalow (or cabina) was very clean and spacious - but they are literally side-by-side so not a great deal of privacy. Incredibly hot shower. Wifi is only in the area of reception, which is some distance from the rooms. Pool was clean and refreshing and a great place to spend the afternoon. Breakfast was included but we didn't take it. It was fine, all in all.
