Hotel El Silencio del Campo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 14 February 2009

My wife and I had a great beginning to our honeymoon at Silencio del Campo. We arrived via Interbus from the San Jose airport and were greeted with a fruit natural drink.

The grounds were impeccably kept with beautiful plants, a pond with ducks, and a beautiful, plant-surrounded thermal pool. Our room was spotlessly clean and made of gorgeous hardwood. Pictures of the rooms online do not do justice to the rooms. The room was complete with a coffee maker and we used it daily. I enjoyed drinking coffee in the morning while looking up at the volcano before breakfast.

The thermal pool was incredible. We went to the Ecothermales hot springs during our stay and found it to be inferior to the hotel's thermal pool. At the hotel there are no crowds and the setting is beautiful. Luis Diego made us some excellent drinks at the bar and let us practice our Spanish.

Eliomar at the front desk did a great job of hooking us up with tours around the area. We did a zipline tour and a kayak river safari trip.

Breakfast in the morning was great. I especially liked the gallo pinto. We enjoyed watching the colorful birds near the restaurant which were lured in with fruit. My wife enjoyed TIki, the chihuahua who would make a trip to the restaurant to visit with people.

The huge hotel next door was certainly a eyesore, but made you appreciate Silencio Del Campo so much more. We would highly recommend the place to anyone.

I will have to agree with the other reviewers here - you do want to stay here if:

You want quiet, you love beautiful flora and fauna, you appreciate a very clean and well maintained property and you enjoy nice people! They are all present and more. The thermal pool is very nicely done and close to a real nice bar - ahhhhhh - such the life!

Although it rained for the three days that we stayed at El Silencio, we enjoyed the facilities greatly. Breakfast that comes with the hotel room was tasty and service friendly.

Our friend at the front desk made our stay enjoyable from start (he greeted us with two fruit smoothies) to finish. He spoke English well, had a pleasant manner and made good suggestions for activities. We loved the whitewater rafting on the El Toro river (especially in the heavy rain).

Lastly, the rooms were huge and all details were well thought out! Enjoy your stay here if you go the the Arenal area!!!

This was our third trip to Costa Rica and this is our favorite place to stay. The only drawback is the large hotel next door, which seems totally out of place. The people who run this place are super. We couldn't have asked for more. Great breakfast in the morning, great little place to sit and have a drink at night by the hot springs. We recommend it without reservation.

We stayed at the hotel for 6 nights in December 2008. If you ever go to La Fortuna it is worth spending a little extra to stay here.

The rooms are spacious and clean. We loved the different figures the made created with the towels every day! The staff made an effort to make us feel at home - and we really did. I even got a hug from the waitress in the restaurant when we left, and it was sad to leave because you had got to know the staff. Eliomar in the reception was extremely helpfull and serviceminded, and did always smile.

The restaurant is not a gourmet place, but we had our dinner there every day because the staff was so warm and welcoming.

The breakfast was good, you could chose from a menu.

We loved the hot springs in the hotel, it was perfect to relax there with a coctail after a long day, trying to imagine how the views to the volcano could have been if it hadn't been cloudy....

We highly recommend Hotel Silencio del Campo. We wouldn't recommend that you do this, but we inadvertently left the room safe wide open with our money, passports, and other valuables. Everything was still there when we returned at the end of the day.

We shared a room with our adult son and his wife for two nights. The room was spacious, spotless, there was no problem having four adults together.

Eliomar and the staff were all helpful. We requested extra towels and they were there waiting for us when we returned to our room after exploring the property. Eliomar also gave us excellent recommendations for dinner and adventures.

The grounds are beautiful and we didn't even mind the fact the volcano was obstructed by clouds during our entire stay.

It rained the entire time, but we were still able to make use of the table and chairs on our covered patio. After zip lining one morning, we returned to eat lunch by the charming hot spring pool.

we stayed for 3 nights in hotel silencio del campo. the comments about eliomar are spot on. really really nice guy - actually, most of the ticos were just so helpful and friendly. the little cottages were spotless, adorable and quiet. it was great! the refridgerator was much appreciated. air conditioning was not absolutely necessary but was an added bonus when the cross breezes didn't work. our 2 kids had a great time jumping on the beds, hanging out at the pool. we didn't have a chance to do more than dip our toes into the thermal pool, but it was a beautiful, small and quiet. we really enjoyed our morning breakfasts of "pancacas" (pancakes) or eggs, always fresh fruit, juices, hot chocolate, or coffee. we had dinner one night, nothing spectacular, i'd recommend venturing to one of the many restaurants in la fortuna instead. still, it was nice to get to the hotel that night and not have to leave again. as mentioned. there is a total eyesore of a hotel that looms over silencio. it's the polar opposite of silencio. it didn't really bother us; after a while, you realize they feel smug about being in a big high rise with room service and pseudo resort feel and you feel smug about being in your cozy intimate cottage. central location. off the beaten path it is not: it is sandwiched among the many large and small resorts between la fortuna and the lake but really feels very tranquil. the landscaping is immaculate and birds fill an area near the open air breakfast area eating bananas pitched on a tree. really special. parking on site.

restaurants: had a GREAT chicken meal at las brasitas
low key zip line tour: only 4 of us ziplined with 4 guides at los lagos, essentially right across the street. for the price of the zip line tour, you also get to hang out in the many thermal springs and regular pools. we were able to split: one parent went with one kid ziplining; the other went with the 3 year old on a horseback ride; we all met at the pool. the kids spent HOURS soaking and going down the slides and sidling up to the in pool bar and bothering the bartender and drinking pineapple or coconut juice.

Great place.
THe employees are very helpful.
The food is very good and fresh, and reasonable.
The dinners were as good if not better, and cheaprer, than anything in town.

THe employees know the area well and give good advice. The rate include taxes and breakfast and is reasonable.

Highlights of the area are the hot springs, skytram, Hotel Margot properrty with its sustainable theme. THe hot springs on the property was as good as any and very quiet and tranquil.

I would definitely stay here again and would like to thank the owner and employees for a great time. The owner sometimes tends the bar and is also a great resource.
