Travelled from Scotland to Costa Rica in March 2011 with our two children. Had the holiday of a lifetime and we would all love to return. Stayed at Leaves and Lizards for 4 nights and wish it could've been longer.

We stayed in the beautiful Monkey Cabin and were amazed by the views of the volcano and the hummingbirds in the trees just beyond the porch. The cabin was really spacious and spotless with excellent beds and a fridge, restocked daily with fresh milk.

Our "two monkeys" loved everything about it! They helped to milk a cow and feed the horses and the highlights for us all were, the horseback ride to the waterfall, ziplining and the kayac trip. We spotted howler and spider monkeys, sloths, caymen, Jesus Christ lizards, fresh water turtles and many species of birds.

Debbie and Steve are fantastic, laid back and so helpful and their staff are equally amazing, from the guides, to the ladies prepairing delicious, home made, fresh food every day. The breakfasts are wonderful with fresh fruit, pancakes and coffee.

In addition to cows and horses, there is a resident parrot, lovely dogs, chickens, pigs, goats and a sloth who resides in the tree beside reception.

If you and your family love nature, visit Costa Rica and stay at Leaves and Lizards. The people are warm and kind and proud of their country. Justifiably so. We hope to return soon!

Room Tip: Beautiful cabins with amazing views.

This was a trip of a lifetime and Leaves and Lizards far exceeded our expectations. Our Hummingbird Hacienda was gorgeous and immaculate. Steve and Debbie are beyond wonderful. They are the epitome of perfect hosts. Their team of helpers all made our stay unforgettable. The surprising part was how much of a healing adventure this turned out to be for me. Their spa is a hidden jewel with incredible women offering a variety of very unique, healing services and massages. Some of the best I've ever had! The food is part of the healthy delight. Fresh, homegrown everything. Real, whole food, all prepared with love and talent. The entire atmosphere is conducive to healing. The beauty, the peace, the kindness and smiles surrounding you,the horseback riding, the animals and sounds of nature, all the movement and exercise you get, the pristine, fresh air... it's an unforgettable, healing retreat hidden away from the hectic drain so many of us live in. Thank you, dear Steve and Debbie. We will be back!

Stayed for 8 nights in Heliconia House. Enjoyed the back porch each and every night. Deb arranged wonderful excursions, and the guides were impeccable. Food was a delight, we ate almost every meal there. Pizza is to die for, the cheese makes it particularly delicious. Plenty to do, with many things left for our return trip(s)! River trip to Cano Negro was especially memorable, along with the beautiful waterfall horseback ride. Seemed like a great place for kids who love the outdoors. We enjoyed talking with many families while there. The people of Costa Rica are so hospitable! If you want a spa experience, there are many fine choices nearby. Tabacon Springs was the best hot springs...few crowds, beautiful surroundings.

We spent 3 nights at Leaves and Lizards in March 2011. It was an amazing 3 nights, and we were so glad to have spent time here. We traveled with our two young daughters, ages 8 and 6. Deb and Steve were great hosts -- Deb helped plan and line up activities, and they were wonderful. Off-site, we did the zip lines (they had guides for our daughters on most of the cables, but our girls were able to go solo for 2 or 3 of the 11 cables). The zip lines were awesome -- fast and fun, but we felt very safe. On-site, we did the horseback ride from Leaves and Lizards to a waterfall -- I never liked horses, but this experience changed my attitude. It's an experience, not just a simple boring trail ride down a path. The girls got up and helped Carlos in the barn each morning and milked the cow and collected eggs (which they then took straight to the restaurant!) The restaurant is open air, and has amazing views of the forest and the volcano. We saw a sloth sleeping in a tree, and Deb has a pet parrot that ate breakfast with us one morning (the parrot ate watermelon and pancakes!) The food was delicious, including fresh eggs from the barn, fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the garden, and fresh milk (for the coffee) and cheese from the cow. Just be prepared for rough roads to Leaves and Lizards -- they aren't dangerous, just rough, and you need a 4x4. We will definitely return to Leaves and Lizards.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Monkey Cabin - great for kids!

Well it's pretty simple, my daughter (10) cannot wait to go back; she said it was one of her best vacations ever. We stayed the whole time (a week) at Leaves & Lizards and had plenty to do which was all interesting and full of adventures. We had fabulous time going horseback riding, swimming in the waterfall, walking in the jungle, taking a boat down Cano Negro -and having a picnic close to caimans and under a cannonball tree: Pura Vida indeed!-, going to Eco Termales (Paradise), ziplining, spending a day at Tico Farm and visiting an animal rescue center. All the guides were incredible, knowledgeable and patient. Food was great and very abundant. Room had a wonderful view and we could see the fireflies at night as well as so many birds during the day....
