my wife and I had a nice stay at mountain paradise. the free breakfast was good and the pool was warm. Ivan took us on a great adventure to tamarindo where we ate local food hung out at the beaches and saw a bullride.

We decided to have our annual paperwork fest in Arenal instead of San Jose. The hotel was absolutely breathtaking. The cabin was huge, the bathroom was a work of art (loved the waterfall). The staff were cheerful (not usually the case in Costa Rica) and the service was second to none. I loved it so much, I ended up staying an extra day to just relax and enjoy myself after all the work was done.

Oh, and the WiFi was excellent. A must for us road warriors. I'll definitely be going back there soon with the wife for some R&R.

Though it did have a pretty good view of the volcano, it was the wrong side. We were looked at it from the north and it was always cloudy...and lava flow in the evenings we learned is only visible from the west.

The restaurant was horrible. My wife and I paid $43 for a horrible soup appetizer and quite possibly the worse seafood pasta we've ever eaten. I'm almost positive it came out of a Chef Boy-R-Dee can. The pool area was nice but every night these blasted this weird techno music from the wet bar. it was super loud and we could hear it even from our room, making it seem like we were staying in an apartment building with super thin walls. (P.S. Better hope you aren't staying next to a newly-wed couple either....because you WILL hear them)

The hotel is inconveniently located no where near the city center or the volcano. In the hight of tourist season we paid $40 round trip to get to the volcano from this hotel. It's only about 12 Km! Ridiculous.

The one shiny spot about this hotel is the rooms. The bed was huge and luxurious. The waterfall-type shower was awesome. The giant TV and cable was a nice touch. And the lighting system and ipod stereo system we nice little add-ons.

This is a very pretty place with nicely furnished rooms including mountain spring showers in the suite bathrooms. A good start but we ran into too many problems to recommend this hotel to others. We found the service was inadequate-during our stay we encountered only ill-trained personnel on site. For example, we wanted to visit the hot springs at Tabacon, so the person in charge told us to arrive at 11 AM for a ride there. We arrived promptly, announced our presence, and were left waiting for a half hour. On the return from the springs we called and were told to be ready by 3 PM. We were picked up at 3:30. We ran into a number of smaller problems from the unavailability of menu items at breakfast to inadequate lighting in the rooms.
These small annoyances could be overlooked but we felt that the staff was reduced due to the post-holiday decline in customers but a truly good hotel maintains levels of service regardless of traffic.
One final note on the rooms. Light sleepers be warned! You can hear anything above a whisper from the adjoining suite. We were able to hear complete conversations and more from our neighbors.

I did a ton of research on hotels in Fortuna and ended up going with Mountain Paradise because they were running a special that made them the least expensive option (we had a deluxe suite). The room was huge and accomodated my family of 4 very well. I was extremely impressed with the cleanliness of our room and the hotel in general. I was also impressed with the level of service - the staff is exceptional. They've got a great restaurant too. We checked out several restaurants in town and, frankly, only one was anywhere near as good as Mountain Paradise's (I also suggest you check out Las Brasitas in town).

Their grounds are lush and well-kept. We particularly liked the way the housekeeper fashioned different designs out of the fresh towels she laid out every day.

We will definitely be back in Fortuna in the future and are planning on staying at Mt. Paradise.

Although we had a warm welcome after a long journey, we wouldn't rate this place. On arrival, the rooms looked quite impressive with a waterfall shower and a bathroom large enough to have a party in! The room would also have been amazing if it hadn't been so damp. The sheets on the bed were wet which didn't make for a comfortable night's sleep and the smell was unpleasant. We had dinner in the restaurant one night which was very tasty but it was a touch overpriced.
Our top tip if you have your own wheels would be to skip la Fortuna all together and head straight to Lake Arenal where there are a handful of lovely hotels surrounding the lake with great views of the volcano at a much cheaper price. If you are planning to take a trip to the Volcano, skip the guided tour that will set you back around $45 (a tourist trap!) and head straight to the Observatory where you can park your car and trek along the signposted trails for $7! (We wished we had done this).

Have you ever been to a hotel where the MANAGER drives you 3 hours away from the hotel to make sure you have a good ride? The manager and his family run this hotel and are so sweet. you look out of your room and see a perfect view of the volcano, from every room. service was great. there is so much to do around this hotel. zip lining and canyoning just to name a few. it was a great hotel for our first trip to Costa Rica. I would definitely stay again.
PS: There is no beach near here. so i recommend doing what we did. stay the the mountain paradise a few days then go to a beach resort.
