“AWESOME RESORT!!”
Reviewed 15 April 2011

This resort is the most awesome place that I've had the pleasure of staying as I have vacationed around the country! The suite is massive and is VERY sanitary. It's the size of a 1-bedroom apartment! The private outdoor shower with the outdoor jacuzzi tub on a HUGE balcony in the middle of the tropical rain forest is just breath-taking! The food is amazing and the staff are very nice and accomodating. The grounds are just absolutely stunning as well!! Like your own tropical paridise while having the opportunity to view nature right up to your door, and in your room if you don't keep the doors closed. An amazing experience!

Room Tip: Any one but we stayed in Nayara Suite

After a last minute decision to change up our honeymoon plans and head to Arenal, we stayed 1 night at Nayara and 1 night at Tabacon (we actually tried to book Tabacon for both nights, but they were booked).

The grounds of the hotel are pristinely manicured and there is a stunning view of the volcano from practically every point on the property (we got lucky and could see the entire volcano without obstruction of clouds which often cover it).

Since we drove in from Mal Pais (about a 6 hour, long and winding trek) we were pretty beat and after waiting awhile to get checked into our room, decided to head straight to the hotel pool for some R&R. The pool is nice and inviting with a cool swim up bar, covered lounge beds, and an AMAZING view of the volcano. Sounds romantic, right? One problem, it was completely overrun with little kids, being kids: playing catch, marco polo, tag, cannon balls, you name it. Normally, not a problem, but we were hoping for a more of a romantic, chill experience. Kind of a bummer. Still we stayed for a while, had a few cocktails before retreating to our romantic villa.

The villa itself was gorgeous. We stayed in Nayara Suite #40, which was a huge suite with a really specatacular view of the gardens and volcano. The suite was private and quiet and included an outdoor jacuzzi for two. The layout of the room was really cool with the bathroom facilities (dual-head indoor AND outdoor shower, two seperate vanity areas with sinks, a kitchenette, and a seperate completely enclosed comode) on one side and the living/sleeping room area on the other. We were impressed. Ended up ordering room service that night to avoid another kidfest down at the hotel restaurant. Food was ok, service was great.

The next day we ate breakfast (again ok, but with a decent selection) and checked out early to head over to the hot springs at Tabacon. Glad we stayed at Nayara the first night and took advantage of the awesome views because the next day the clouds rolled in and socked in the volcano so you could no longer see the top. In comparing the two, Nayara definitely had better suites, better volcano views, and more afforable pricing; however, it's hard to trump Tabacon's service, location and accessibility to the hot springs plus their food was much better.

All in all, beautiful, family-oriented hotel with awesome suites.

Room Tip: Stayed in Nayara Suite #40: PERFECT + AWESOME VIEW

We stayed at the Nayara hotel 4 nights in March with our 2 children (age 8 and 10). It is a beautiful hotel, well maintained, with very friendly staff. The gardens are well designed and have magnificent flowers and plants and the rooms (casitas) are surrounded by vegetation, which gives a great feeling of privacy. Each room has a view of the volcano from the bed. The breakfast selection (buffet) is so good... Although it seems to have been designed for couples, it is very kids friendly.
Excursions not to be missed: sky tram and ziplines, whitewater rafting (Desafio), tour of animal rescue center/biodiesel facility/ecofarm

I should preface this review by saying we had just come from the most incredible hotel either of us had ever stayed at on the central Pacific coast, so our whole experience at Nayara was in comparison to the incomparable hotel we had just come from. Had we known more about the Arenal region we would have just stayed on the beach, but alas there we were at Arenal Nayara. When we planned our trip I don't think we realized it would be disappointing to leave the stunning private beach of our previous hotel to come up into the cloud forest. In fact, we were really looking forward to it since we had totally splurged on the Nayara. At $350/night we had set our expectations high.

After a long drive we arrived at Nayara and right from the beginning it just never felt very good to be there. To be fair, the physical property was INCREDIBLE. The gardens were very beautiful and our suite was insanely nice. We had huge wrap around deck with a gorgeous view of the volcano, outdoor hot tub, outdoor and indoor shower, huge plush king bed, and a fantastic bathroom. Same goes for the spa; it was heavenly and exceeded our expectations.

It was the staff at Nayara that was so disappointing. When we decide to spend that kind of money on the hotel in Central America we expect a lot. I never really felt welcome there and most of the time I felt like I was inconveniencing the staff when asking routine questions. Questions like what are some good tours to go on, whats a good restaurant in town, how much should a cab cost, etc. We went to the Tabacon Hot Springs at the recommendation of the hotel staff and it was an absolute zoo. It cost us $70 per person for admission and a buffet dinner that was worth maybe 10 bucks. It was crowded and horrible, but highly suggested by the guys at Nayara.

Perhaps the "Pura Vida" culture is not as alive in the Arenal region as it on the Pacific coast, but our whole experience there was uncomfortable. Even the restaurant staff were unfriendly. There was one guy in the restaurant who was SO nice and I wish I remembered his name so I could give him some props; it was refreshing to have someone treat us kindly after being there for a couple of days. This place has the potential to be world class, but their collective attitude really made us regret spending the money and wasting the time. When we go back to Costa Rica we will skip the Arenal region entirely and we'll spend more time on the Pacific coast where the ocean is warm and the people are friendly.

We are very sorry that we were not able to meet your expectations during your recent stay.
Since we opened our doors three years ago, this is the first time that we have received a review complaining about the friendliness and warmth of our staff. As the quality of our personalized service is precisely one of the main reasons we are so highly rated by Trip Advisor and most other travel websites, we have to confess that we were taken aback by your review. We have been investigating what went wrong during your stay and unfortunately we have not been able to find anything besides the fact that you had a bad experience at Tabacon; to which we are completely unrelated except for recommending them as one of the best hot spring in the Arenal area. I would appreciate very much the opportunity to speak with you to gain a better understanding of what happened during your stay at Nayara. Once again, we would like to apologize for recommending a hot springs experience you did not enjoy and to reiterate, we are in no way affiliated with Tabacon and do not benefit financially from recommending their hot springs, or any of the others for that matter. We do hope you give us the opportunity to understand your dissatisfaction and properly address any issues that may remain..

We had a wonderful, relaxing, and thoroughly pleasant stay at the Nayara last month. The rooms are nothing short of world class, the grounds beautiful with abundant exotic flowers and plants and the staff among the friendliest and helpful that I have ever encountered. Some of the staff learned and welcomed us by name, a nice touch. We had a problem with one of the notoriously poor local tour operators and the hotel management went way out of their way to help us get reimbursed. I was contacted by the hotel owner in Florida to resolve the problem. Now, THAT is unusual and very welcome. Note that I checked virtually every box below in describing the hotel's style. This is a special place and the owner's fingerprints are all over it.

My wife and I spent the second half of our honeymoon at the Nayara hotel and gardens. What a romantic area! The view of the volcano, a hot tub in the back deck with hammock and chairs, an outside shower and so much more! Nayara's atmosphere was PERFECT for a couples getaway! We came from the Gaia hotel in Manuel Antonio, so it's hard for me to give Nayara an excellent rating on service if they got one, because they were so good at it, but my wife and I both loved the set up of the rooms at the Nayara much better.
