This is probably one of the nicest hotels we have been to. We had the middle level room, the Nayara Suite, which was beautiful: private terrace with Jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor showers, and well stocked reasonably-price mini bar. The room service and housekeeping were great, leaving us towel animals like a cruise ship. Everyone at the property was amazing, and they even made a cake for my girlfriends birthday and brought it out after our first dinner.

I highly recommend the Spa, which had amazing treatments for great prices and a free outdoor yoga class each morning.

Finally, the prices for food and alcohol are extremely reasonable.

My family stayed here last week for 4 nights (2 adults, 2 kids ages 13 and 15) and we cannot say enough fabulous things about our stay. Let me also preface this by saying when we travel like to stay in nice hotels (like the Four Seasons). From the moment we arrived which was super early - after a red eye flight and a 3 hour drive - they warmly welcomed us and invited us to have breakfast, took our bags, asked us if we needed anything while our rooms were being cleaned (which they rushed so we could get in and rest) and were just so attentive. This was just the beginning. The rooms were beautiful with everything you'd want - cable tv, a/c, robes, big canopied bed, rose petals everyday, turn down service with cookies and candy at night, hammock on your private patio, and the outdoor shower was awesome! The grounds were exquisite, the restaurants were delicious, but what truly sets this hotel apart was their service. Their attention to detail - they seemed to anticipate our every need and want. So well trained is this staff, that every person we came across from the front desk, to housekeeping, to waiters, to the drivers were friendly, polite, respectful, personable, and ready to do whatever we asked (which we never had to ask because it was always done). Truly, the best service I have had at any hotel (and we've been everywhere from Hawaii to the Caribbean to New York and Europe). The pool was lovely (and warm), they have 3 very cool jacuzzis (not to mention the private one in every room), and the location is close to everything with an amazing view of the volcano! This is the place to stay if you are looking for a beautiful hotel and exceptional service!

Room Tip: We had the "basic" casita room which was outstanding! If we went without the kids (and did...

After flying from Boston to San Jose (with stop in Florida) and then being picked up at the airport and driven the almost two hours to Arenal, we were pretty tired upon arriving at Nayara. The lobby of the hotel is beautiful and we were welcomed very pleasantly with a cold drink. Check-in was a breeze, the bags were loaded on to a golf cart and we were driven up the hill to our villa. The villas are amazing- the deck is large and has a hot tub (!), the interior is large and very nicely finished. There are TWO showers- one large, glass rain shower in the middle of the bathroom area, one outdoor shower with two shower heads. The grounds are amazing with so many different flowers, plants and paths. There are two pools at the hotel- one, with seating areas in the water and a swim-up bar where we enjoyed dinner and drinks, and then another in the "adults only" section with the larger villas. There is also a gym (in the same building as the spa), full-service spa, free yoga classes and bird watching, movies and books to borrow, and additional activities (cooking classes, private dinners, wine tastings) you can add on for an extra cost.

That brings me to the only not-so-great thing about Nayara- the cost! We knew, going into staying here, that this was an expensive hotel- one that we wouldn't have stayed at if it was not our honeymoon. However, we ended up spending a ton on food and drinks at the hotel because we did not realize it would be difficult to get into town (this is our own fault- we could have researched more closely). If you do not rent a car, it will cost you 20$ round-trip to get to Fortuna, the closest town with lots of restaurants, shops, grocery store. It seemed that after all we were paying to stay at the hotel, the hotel could provide complimentary transportation into town. Breakfast is included with your stay (at least it was for us..) but you will pay out of pocket for all your other meals. The breakfast buffet at the main restaurant is vast and delicious, they also offer breakfast at Amor Loco (in the "adult" area) but we never made it up to try. Lunch and dinner are a la carte, except for a weekly buffet dinner in the main dining area. The food was very good at the main dining room and Amor Loco, the sushi restaurant was just okay, and the pool-side options are what you would expect- bar food.

As for excursions, we went to the Eco Termales hot springs (a bit overpriced and run down, I would consider going elsewhere), horseback riding to the waterfall (awesome!) and an ATV tour (again, overpriced and not really worth just riding around one farm). There are so many excursions to chose from! I would also recommend taking a ride into Fortuna and eating at one of the "soda's" or typical Costa Rican restaurants (Soda Visquez I beleive was the one we tried and it was delcious!)

In closing, the Nayara is an amazing hotel and consider yourself very lucky if you booked a trip here, you are going to have a great time!

Room Tip: If you can locate a map of the hotel, villa #36 was amazing- it was at the top of the property and f...

This is not the hotel you stop and "think" you might wanna stay here. You just make a reservation now period!
This was the third hotel we stayed in Costa Rica and I can't say each one was better than the other one because truth is, each hotel had is unique personality and Nayara did really surprise us.
How can you know how is the perfect honeymoon like? If there is a booklet or a manual I missed it. But I think the perfect honeymoon is when you have amazing moments with your couple, and places like Nayara help to have this unique, amazing and lovely moments that I'm sure my wife and I will never forget.

First of all, don't expect Costa Rica to be cheap at all. Nayara is no exception but I tell you, is Worth it. Food is just amazing delicious. If you are vegetetarian they have the hummus sandwich is so goood!!! if you like meat the ribeye is a must! People are friendly, they remember your name, service is excellent and everybody is helpful. My wife loves to take pictures and this is the place where you will find some nice shots. Also there are jacuzzis around the hotel area surrounded by vegetation. We had a SPA session and found people to be professional, the ambience is romantic and fun.

Hope this review is helpful! Enjoy your stay at Costa Rica!

I guess I should start off by saying that this was my fault for wanting "Pura Vida" and staying in this area.

We began our honeymoon in the southern part of the country at a small ecolodge smack dab in the middle of the rainforest. Literally, everything was built around trees and we were woken up every morning to howler monkeys outside the window. By the end of our 4 days, we knew every employee's name (there were only about 5) and even made friends with our waiter. The food was delicious and fresh, everyone was amazingly and genuinely friendly, the whole lifestyle and atmosphere was truly Pura Vida.

We thought by breaking up our trip we'd get the best of both worlds of Costa Rica; the Eco-rainforest side and the luxury side. While Nayara was indeed luxurious (minus the cruddy wifi), leaving was easy. We got in and were told to do a personal meet and greet with an informal cocktail. I'm not a drinker, but I wasn't aware that beer and wine was a cocktail. It wasn't personal, it was routine, it was a push to get our money. It was held at the sushi restaurant, where we felt totally obligated to stay and buy overpriced sushi and felt bad getting up in front of everyone and leaving after it was done. The entire stay we were paranoid about using anything because we didn't want to get charged and oftentimes when we asked to double check if something was extra, we got a condescending "no".

I realize that this is a 5 star resort and we couldn't expect anything cheap, but it was $20 just to get to and from town! When we first asked about going into town, the guy at the front desk told us, "It's only ten dollars, no problem". We didn't realize until after that it was $10 each way. It's a maybe 5 mile ride to town, and there's no way to walk or bike, so you have to take the shuttle if you want to go to town. We had wanted to have dinner in town to save money, but with the shuttle price, it would've been the same price as eating at the hotel.

Our last night in Costa Rica, we decided to try the restaurant and order something we could afford. We got the spaghetti, but also got a disappointed and condescending, "that's it?" from our server, who obviously wanted us to get something more expensive. For $12 a plate we got a measly amount of spaghetti and although it was really good, we were still hungry afterwards. We ordered a brownie for dessert and that wasn't much better. I worked as a waitress and our brownies in my restaurant were frozen blocks of chocolate that we microwaved and served with ice cream. That was exactly what we ate here. I could just about taste the plastic bag with it. Now I'm sure they'll probably try to save face by saying that it was freshly baked or something, but I guarantee there was nothing fresh about it. The manager of the restaurant even approached us at one point and asked if we were staying at the hotel. Obviously we didn't look dressed up enough to be dining there. That was really snobby.

The staff was very unsympathetic and almost snobby every time I double checked to see if the extra things they offered us would be charged to our room. There were a few very helpful and genuine staff members, but overall we weren't impressed. While all the service was great on paper, it seemed very ingenuine. You can get more genuine service at Chik Fil A, heck, even In N Out Burger. The staff here all felt very routine and not personal at all. They would always help, but just seemed like it was just another day at work and you were just another tip. The food was decent at best. After staying in the jungle and eating amazing Costa Rican food, the breakfast here was like Hometown Buffet. Nothing tasted fresh, the pancakes kind of tasted like plastic, I was just shocked that a luxury atmosphere would take precedence over quality food.

Overall, at the end of our trip, I had forgotten that we were in Costa Rica. It felt like good old commercialized Hawaii and if I could do it all over, I'd stay the heck away from here. "Pura Vida" was manufactured and fake here and I couldn't wait to get home.

We spent three nights here during our honeymoon trip to Costa Rica and enjoyed every minute of it. We truly felt the "Pura Vida" spirit from the Tico staff here and we were very well taken care of. The staff was exceptionally personable, the amenities were comfortable, and we were asked a number of times if there was anything that could be done to make our stay better, to which we could always respond "not a thing!". We would like to give particular shout-outs to Andres at reception and Jonathan, the bar tender at the pool bar. Andres helped us navigate two tour companies to make some adjustments to our initial itinerary, and took care of all of the phone calls and coordination so we didn't have to worry. He made excellent recommendations based on what we were looking for, and couldn't have made it easier for us to just relax and enjoy. We were also able to watch Costa Rica beat Greece down at the pool bar, and Jonathan's friendliness and willingness to experience the game with us made us feel right at home. The food at Amor Loco was also delicious with wonderful service to accompany it!

From the moment my husband and I walked into the hotel lobby we knew we were someplace special. Meet with smiles, a tasty drink and quick service, we jumped into the cart, got a tour of the grounds and ended at our breath-taking room. The room was gorgeous: outdoor shower, large living space, a balcony with a large Jacuzzi tub, hammock, 2 large comfortable chairs and a full on amazing view of the Arenal Volcano. The service was super, the staff from housekeeping to restaurants to lobby were exceptional. Andres, a tour guide took time to point out the 3 Toed-Sloths, the Jesus Christ Lizard, and explain so much about the animals and Costa Rica itself. Great person. The food was some of the best I have ever had, couldn't stop eating any fish dish they had. The grounds are beautiful, the pools are wonderful and if we could do it again, we would but maybe stay longer than the week we did.
Will definitely be back next time we are able to visit Costa Rica again. This is a must stay place.
