This was a last minute add-on to our trip, and it was spectacular. Try and get there early before the buses arrive, but not too early that the mist hasn't cleared. If the crater is not visible, then either wait for a while or take the walk to Lake Botos. Again, if it's not, clear don't give us easily. We waited 15 minutes and the clouds literally parted and the sun came out. It's probably the closest you're going to get to an active volcano and the view is worth it. The other loop walk is nice if you've got time to kill but it's more of the same rainforest you saw on the hike to the lake.
