“Magic by the lake”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

My husband and I stayed here for two nights - the first stop on our belated honeymoon - the room was huge clean, comfortable and simply decorated (seemingly hard to find in this area!). The bathroom was great and the shower awesome (best on the trip maybe). The room had stunning wooden porch out front from which you could see the lake (and on clear days we understand the volcano too).

The grounds are magic. The garden is stunning and the pool, with it's waterfall was simply amazing. The restaurant served a delicious, included breakfast. We had dinner there one night and can definitely recommend the pizza.

The staff were friendly though only the owner spoke English. We did our best with Spanish but there was definitely a lot lost in translation.

This spot is on the other side of the lake form the volcano - it is realistically a good 1-1.5hr drive to the volcano, and closer to 1.5-2hrs to La Fortuna. Most of the activities are near La Fortuna, but to be honest the drive along the lake is so awesome we were glad we stayed where we did. La Fortuna was very touristy and we were there in the off season.

FYI this is also close to the delicious Equus BBQ joint (literally a 5 minute drive away), and about 30 minutes from the Gingerbread Restaurant.

Highly recommend for those looking for a quiet corner of paradise, away from tourists.

Room Tip: Stayed in one of the lodge rooms - fantastic. Fan and A/C. It was quiet when we were there, I could...

This was a stop on a bike tour, so we hadn't picked it. Lots of build up from the guides so I was somewhat sceptical, but it really lived up to the hype - a lot depends what room you get as to how great, but all I saw were beautiful. The place is set on a hillside looking over the lake, utterly peaceful and gorgeously landscaped. The stars at night were very special. Two of our group ended up with what can only be described as a house - huge rooms and stunning shared kitchen, massive living room, huge veranda and (bonus) big jacuzzi! All with that wonderful view. My room was in a standard row of rooms, not the thickest of walls, but huge space, comfy, and very tasteful and well decorated, with personality and a lot of charm. Light and bright, super clean, handmade soap too! Amazing bedroom view, and a lovely veranda with comfy chairs in front to enjoy it. Lots of space to explore in the gardens, sympathetically natural lay out, and full of wildlife. We saw armadillos while having a beer by the pool, which was pretty special. The pool is small but picturesque, with a natural styled waterfall at the back, and under the trees so felt like it belonged there, although you didn't get a lake view/room for doing lengths. It was perfect to cool down from riding! We all loved it. Ditto the restaurant - by far the best food we had in Central America, although admittedly Italian not local, with homemade bread, great properly made pasta, excellent wine. Breakfast was wonderful too, and all with that lake view that is truly breathtaking. Very friendly host. We were a bit surprised at the no artificial soft drinks/rubbish rule, but the homemade juice was incredible and much nicer than the usual coke or fanta. Basically, if you're heading to Arenal, and want a low-key and beautiful rest, this place is a must-stop.

Room Tip: Jungle rooms, we think they were called, did not have the lake view, but were super quiet and seclud...

The jungle cabin was gorgeous! Two walls of windows that give the feeling of being in the trees. The hardwood floors and walls nearly make it a work of art. I wish we'd had more time to just sit and.... meditate. The Mystica's definition of an outdoor shower is 3 walls and a mini waterfall with temperature controls. The fourth "wall" is where the shower is open to the front porch and the jungle. It took me about 45 seconds to lose my inhibitions and enjoy the experience. Very good food in the restaurant . A simple and tasty breakfast is included. Fantastic views and nice hike right on the grounds. No A/C and none needed. One night we had to use the down comforter. Even when the wind is HOWLING, the cabin is reasonably quiet. And... NO howler monkeys to keep you awake.

In our travels around Costa Rica, we happened upon Mystica and as luck would have it, they had lodging available for us. What a treat it was! We walked around the grounds and sat outside in the morning and evening just gawking at the beauty that surrounds this very peaceful location. The staff were friendly and the rooms, while very simple, were very clean. We did not have the opportunity for yoga which would be a reason to return. However, we did eat dinner at the restaurant and it was marvelous. I would return for the pizza and heartily recommend Mystica for relaxation, for the beauty of its location and the food.

Room Tip: This is small and most rooms seemed comparable. A must is to try the pizza!

Just came back from a couple of days at the resort. It is clean, peaceful and a little part of paradise. We had a room facing lake Arenal and enjoyed the fine Italian dining experience. It is definitely and place to go back to. It does not matter if you are into yoga or not: just peaceful mind relaxation. Pura Vida!

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the lake. we enjoyed the full moon!

We loved this place. The owners were so nice and really cared about our stay. The food was organic and delicious. The place was beautiful - there are some small hikes (really really small if you are a hiker) from the resort, yoga in the jungle, a tree house for massage, and a natural pool. Renting a car might be a better option here if you want to visit other restaurants and the volcanos but the owners were really helpful in arranging transportation for us and we like to walk so there were some things available - small hikes, wind-surfing, cute coffee shop, and a few restaurants.

I planned to stay 2 nights in that place,I discovered a paradise and finally stayed 4 nights. There is nothing negative to say about it:
. the place is beautiful, the garden and relaxing places outstanding: It was a warm welcomed: People were helpfull as could be : I was here in the same time than these people who made very bad commentaries about the place: They even were disgracefull with Barbara who is the most gentle women you can find: The problem is with them not with mystic hotel, they should go to consult instead of behaving the way they did
