“Unique Rural Lodge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2013

We spent three nights at Canas Castilla and rate this place highly. We felt very welcome by the owners, who did everything to make us comfortable. We stayed there in absolute low and rainy season, still we could do the recommended hikes on the property, spend time in amazing Bahia Salinas and relax. The Swiss owners have emigrated to this very remote place and used to live here with their children without any modern amenities (water, electricity, sewage) during the first years. When they finally managed to get their little garden Eden connected to those basic services, they transformed a part of their vast property into a simple but cosy lodge.
Guests are lodged in one of several "cabinas" built by the owner Guido. The beds are comfortable, there is a safe deposit box in every cabina, ventilators, mosquito protection in front of the windows and hot water in the private bathrooms is always available. The view is to the river, where you can also spot the occasional croc. We observed howler and spider monkeys from the hamoc on the terraces in front of the cabinas, saw a snake and much more on the different nature walking trails. Muddy! Bring rubber boots in the rainy season!
Overall, the place is still a Finca (= farm), that means there are about 50 cows, plenty of horses, chickens, a baby sloth which was abandoned by its mother, and all sorts of plantations, from veggies , oranges to teak. Also, it is normal to find insects or other less welcome representatives of the animal kingdom around the houses.
Agi is a good cook, who serves every evening a surprise fusion of Swiss and Tico food, with a lot of delicious vegetables (must reserve). The breakfast includes home baked bread, fresh fruit, eggs etc.
For next year, they are preparing a place for motorhomes/camping.
Unique.

These very nice Swiss owners have a large finca close to the border and La Cruz. Cabanas are comfortable, although with some insects esp at evenings. At the finca, they created three beautifull trails, we did all of them at least two times! Nice views, monkey's to welcome you in the morning.
We stayed a week, felt like home.

Stayed 3 wonderful nights for 4 days exploring from Santa Rosa NP up through the entire Bahia Salinas area. Wonderful hospitality; homecooked food prepared with love; abundant wildlife on the property incl squirrel monkeys, sloths and many birds (Cinnamon hummingbird was a new species for me). Giant tree canopy kept it cool and photogenic. Crocs in the river; orchids and cacti in the trees. Spacious, airy room with lots of storage; scenic patio view of river; well-marked trails with 360-degree scenic overlooks up to Nicaragua; charming owners who alternated eating with the guests; about 20 min from "downtown" La Cruz and well-signed on good roads. Very reasonably priced for all the services. This will be THE place for further exploration of this part of CR.

Room Tip: All rooms were individually designed and built by the owners with guest comfort in mind. Each has a...

Happened upon this wonderful gem while touring Costa Rica. We spent a wonderful afternoon. Wonderful hostess, staff welcomed us with a cool drink. Walked along the river, saw monkeys, a sloth and a crocodile. We were only sorry that we were staying elsewhere and couldn't spend the night!

You are in the dry jungle. Crocodile in the pond, monkeys on trees, sloth, very comfortable. Food is so-so, about what I would cook myself, so can't complain, forget about drinks, may be just wine and bear. Wi-Fi and phone reception are not easy. Few trails around, just to exercise. Horseback riding tour was impressive. Owners are great people.

What a nice place! Very welcoming and helpful owners, nice cabins, and plenty of nature experiences. Howler monkies to wake you up in the morning, sloths in the trees, and a crocodile in the river, plus birds and butterflies. Good home cooked food at a communal table. Nice walks available in the surroundingm mixture of forest and agriculteral land. Well placed for excursions into Nicarague - Granada and the Masaya volcano make an excellent trip.

I came here with my girlfriend for one night only, and that was our only issue with the visit - it was too short!

Agi and her family run an amazing farm with hiking trails, tons of wildlife, and horses available for rides. We hiked most of the trails and saw a sloth, tons of monkeys, beautiful birds, and more. We were there for a Sunday night which meant woodfire pizza! It was delicious, and they made several varieties. We ate with the rest of the guests (who pretty much only speak German and Spanish) and had a lovely evening - complete with homemade cactus wine!

Our stay was great and Agi helped me figure out how to do the Nica-CR border crossing for the lowest price too. She speaks great English and was a fantastic host. Highly recommend!

Room Tip: If you want more than just a fan, get a room with A/C.
