“Not your place if you are traveling SOLO”
Reviewed 11 January 2011

Set in a historically quaint house with lots of character but there is no "dorm room" offer, like other hostels. If you are traveling solo, your options are a couple of box-like rooms with a tiny or non-existant window. Options for 2+ people will land you a nicer/larger room with better ventilation and windows. Needs a renovation- new plywood on the walls, a new paint job, and a good CLEANING. Beds= boards with 5 inch thin mattresses. Towel and sheets provided.

You get what you pay for. $10 for a single, $15 for a double, $30 for a nicer large room.

If you have dust or mold alergies, this is NOT the place for you!!!

Tip- rooms on the other side of the street- across from the main office (the hostel has 2 buildings)- are better quality and include a quaint patio area with tables. Free wi-fi. Staff is very friendly and helpful. There is a guard in the office at a night.

Stayed here one night
The room is not big
the building is a bit old and need some renovation
there were crawling creatures on the floor and in the bathroom
the manager is OK.
The front entrance is not well guarded- except at night
the nearby Casa Vieja offer for the same amount of money- much larger room, cleaner, newer and definitely more recommended.

If you don't like spending money this is a great place.

My room (and I got the same one both times I stayed here) was a simple one made of plywood. It's in the building across the street from the front desk check-in.

There was an ok bed in it, a small TV, lamp and some shelves. I would have to wonder how secure the room is, as it's open to the street during the day, but I had no problems. I certainly wouldn't leave anything of value lying around, though.

The courtyard is surprisingly charming, with picnic tables and a fish tank. There is a shared washroom with a shower.

The other guests seemed to mostly be youngish backpacker types. There was no loud noise or partying going on, which I appreciated.

The guy at the front desk is friendly and speaks english well. He can arrange tours to Rincon De La Vieja and tell you the bus schedules.

I thought the place was nice and I would even recommend it to a friend (not a posh one)! The house is really full of character and so was our room. Only problem it was incredibly hot! We had a tiny tv and mosquito net.

Our room was located in the building opposite to the reception which has a nice courtyard and clean shared bathrooms. The staff was helpful. They helped us organize trips to Palo Verde and Santa Rosa national parks.

At approx. $9 for a bed in central Liberia, you get what you pay for. The rooms have obviously seen better days and while they weren't filthy, they could have been cleaner.

But you could definitely do a lot worse for the price in Liberia and the manager/owner of the hostel, Denis, is helpful with regard to local informaiton and arranging tours and the location is very central.

The shared bathrooms were clean enough (towels can be obtained from reception for a deposit of 2,500 colones) and the rear courtyard is a great sunspot.

The hostel is situated on Calle Real. We didn't experience any noise problems, but it is probably worth asking for a room beside the courtyard if you want to minimise the risk of being woken up.

Recommended for backpackers on a budget. If you have a bit more money to spend, 9000 colones will get you a bed in Casa Viaje on the next block down.

We read about this Hostel in the Frommers Costa Rica and felt a little misled. The colonial house was charming and thoughtfully decorated and the help was friendly but it was anything but clean. The barely suspended ceiling was constructed of particle board. The room itself was an insect tour. The hotel generously provided a mosquito net that barely covered half of the double bed. Our barred glass-less window overlooked a cute garden with picnic tables. However we were forced to close it at night to keep out the wildlife which made the room unbearably stuffy. A fan was provided to move around the hot air. The bed was made up nicely with sheets and two pillows nothing more. We were excited to have our own bathroom no matter the size. We only wish we would have known that it didn't come with hot water. It did though come with ants of many sizes, lots of noise, and a few roaches. The towels that were provided stunk of mildew. They did have safe, private parking and again, friendly helpful staff, but if you want a good night's sleep I recommend sleeping elsewhere. At $20 for a private double bed room and a private bath we didn't expect much but we would have enjoyed a little bit of sleep.

Stayed here for two nights prior to returning to the airport in Liberia. It certainly has character, located on the 'historic' street in Liberia. The staff were friendly, although only limited English spoken, but it is Costa Rica! Room needed a good lick of paint, the walls were very thin indeed (we didn't have too many noise problems but it was low season) - we had to ask for extra sheets as the ones already on the bed, didn't really pass a clean test! Small courtyard outside, which potentially could get noisy, especially as some of the rooms don't have closing windows, just mesh. Fan and tv in room. Shared bathrooms, also a little grubby, only cold showers.
But for the price (9000 colones/night ~$18, £9)...
