“Start Your Costa Rican Adventure Here!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2012

A short cab or bus ride from the Liberia Airport gets you to Curubande where El Sol Verde is situated.Only minutes from National Park Rincon de le Vieja "El Sol Verde" is the perfect spot to start your adventure. It offers modestly priced rooms as well as a beautiful little camp ground. You can pitch your tent or keep it paked away and stay in a custom designed wonderfuly ventilated "tent shelter". The camp grounds includes a lovely constructed bathroom and shower area,a BBQ as well as a large outdoor wash sink for dishes and clothing.(they will also rent you camping dishes for a few bucks) The owners,Gerard and Ingrid, are wonderful people who make you feel at home and offer valuable advice and information about the area and Costa Rica in general. They filled me in on what to see and do in the Park, and also what beaches I should check out on the Pacific Coast(they lived on the coast for some time) My so-called "extra features" of El Sol Verde would be; Ingrid's breakfast, Gerard's handcrafted stone work, the wonderful view , the awesome swimming hole down the street and the huge mango tree loaded with mangos.

We stayed there 2 days in one of the rooms. Small room, 2 single beds, one bedside table, one little folding bench, no dresser. So, we left our things in our suitcases, wide opened, and we did not have too much space. No air-conditioning, but a ceiling fan; in summer, it must be very warm. Nice surroundings, very well-kept, quiet and restful place. Unfortunately, the patio is a common area for the three rooms and people must pass right in front of this room (window) to get to their room. Moreover, while we stayed there, there were 3 young men who spent their evening playing cards and chatting rather loudly on this patio, at the table right in front of our window! Excellent breakfast and the owners are very welcoming and available, taking time to explain you all there is to know and do around. The Rincon de la Vieja Park is very close. After your walk in the park you can go to cool in a small river, 15 minutes walk from the lodge.

we stayed at el sol verde for a couple of nights. it was a great experience!! The lodges were comfortable and very clean and breakfast was great with eggs from the chickens that are strolling around. The owners Gerard and Ingrid were very helpfull and friendly and helped us with our little side trip to Granada (Nicaragua). this B&B is very close to the park Ricon the la Vieja which is a very beautiful park with well described trails showing you waterfalls, volcanic activity and forest. Great place to be!

The fixed tents in the campsite are a real novelty and great fun to spend a night or two in. They were spotlessly clean and there were toilets and showers very close to the tents. The tents have secure waterproof zips and padlocks are provided. I do recommend checking the rooms before going to bed as a large scorpion found it's way into our tent. It was the fastest we've ever got up!
Ingrid was very helpful assisting us retreive personal property that one of our group left in the taxi. She gave some suggestions on walking routes which we are glad we listened to or we would have missed some great sights at the National Park due to very heavy rain in the afternoon.

Room Tip: We stayed in the outdoor fixed tents so couldn't recommend a room.

II can not say enough about the beauty of this place and the helpful and fun attitude of the owners, Gerard and Ingrid. Before we even left on our trip we contacted them and they emailed back so quickly with info, so we got a good vibe right away. We originally planned to only stay a few days to go to the park (Rincon de la Vieja), but we were so taken with the place, the helpful tips for nearby fun and our hosts, that we ended up staying the rest of our vacation there (7 days total)! Gerard and Ingrid made the place feel like home, comfortable and inviting. Their two dogs were great and one went on all our walks with us around town, they also have fresh eggs from their chickens every morning for breakfast as well (bonus)!

We camped 6 of the seven days and I must say that there facilities are great, so clean and very well designed. They have a range top for cooking, separate cooking/cleaning sinks from the bathroom and shower area, which is really nice. The woodwork and look of the facilities shows how much work these two have put into this place. The area is beautiful and we saw so much wildlife and fauna that it was hard to leave even to do things we had planned. The final night we stayed in a room (so we could deconstruct our tent the night before, for an early start) and it was beautiful and again, so clean. As you can tell, I will be back and I would recommend this place to anyone, as there is something for everyone: from a nice room, to a tent house, to bring your own tent, everyone can enjoy this place the way they prefer. I also must admit the park itself was a more wonderful experience with the information Gerard and Ingrid supplied, their willingness to share what they knew of the park and the area was a great asset!

Room Tip: Even if you can't get a room, try a tent house, they are so cool!

We booked rooms here only a few days before leaving the US - the campground was the only lodging available within the property. Upon arriving, we were immediately pleased with the accommodation. The tents "houses" were spacious, well-constructed, near bathrooms/showers, clean, and convenient (you could drive your car right up to the tents if you needed). They didn't have much a view (as I think the rooms did), but for the price, we thought they were definitely worth it! This bed and breakfast was close to the national park, hot springs, and less than a 5 minute walk into the "center" of town (very small and rural). The owners were beyond gracious, enthusiastic, and helpful in providing information on local hikes, in addition to where to grab a meal in town (we ate at a local pub both nights -- VERY authentic costa rica cuisine, but good wholesome food and very affordable). Breakfast was OK food-wise, but lovely scenery-wise. We felt very taken care of and would go back! It was a nice start to a rustic costa rica vacation.

Room Tip: The campground was the only lodging available to us and we lucked out! The three tents were separat...

I stayed at El Sol Verde the first 2 nights of a 10 day excursion to Costa Rica and had an absolutely wonderful time. The hosts, Gerard & Ingrid, were more than willing to help me (a single traveler) find my way around town & plan my hike at Rincon de la Vieja National Park as well as help me figure out where to go and what to do next (as I had no concrete plans)! The room itself was clean and cozy with a gorgeous view overlooking the forests. I had the best night’s sleep in the comfortable bed listening to the howler monkeys, birds and bull frogs. The grounds were beautifully maintained. Breakfast was delicious and kept me fueled for a long day of hiking. Overall it was a great value.

I highly recommend this hidden gem.

Thanks again Gerard & Ingrid!
