“Very beautiful, but no substance after dark.”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

This resort is beautiful with nice rooms. The pool and pool bar was very nice also. To get to the rough sea shell beach you have to be harrassed by vendors every time you come and go to get something to drink, eat or use the restrooms. It is very difficult to get into one of the specialty restaurants that are only 2/3 full throughout each evening, which leaves the evening buffet that I would not serve to anyone. We did get into the specialty restaurants a couple of times, left due to the poor quality of food and ordered room service.
All of the restaurants and bars were great during the day.
Be careful walking anywhere due to dozens of mini-trucks driving constantly on the sidewalks throughout the day and evening. We were shocked this was a Westin.

Dear Jeff44926,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with us.
It is regrettable that your stay with us did not meet the expectations that previous Westin Hotels have provided for you. One of the major purposes of online reviews is to highlight areas for improvement and your feedback provides our hotel with valuable information that we can review to improve on for the future.
Nevertheless, it's important that you be aware that by law all the beaches in Costa Rica are public, that's why it's a little difficult for us to control all the movements on the beach, we appreciate your understanding about this matter.
We are grateful for your comments, we're always looking to improve our product and service to offer our guests a beautiful vacation.
Warm regards from Costa Rica,

We stayed a week and had a terrific experience. Heidy helped coordinate a few things on the front end and was exceptionally helpful. Once we arrived, we were impressed with the resort and all the amenities. We enjoyed all the various food and beverage offerings, and the staff was super friendly and very well trained. Golf was great, and it was really easy to get last minute tee times. Had fun taking pictures on monkeys, iguana, etc. The nearby village was a very short walk along the beach, and they had a big rodeo on Saturday night.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room near the big pool and the beach. Liked that location.

The hotel is pretty to look at, but beware of mediocre food, lukewarm showers and iffy electrical systems.

We stayed at this hotel for my husband's incentive trip. We were very excited about the prospects of a vacation in Costa Rica at an all inclusive Westin resort, but were very disappointed in it. The staff was very nice and the outings were great, but the hotel is really missing some very basic amenities -- like hot water.

The showers are lukewarm at best. We asked about it, and the staff were really nice about it, but they didn't really seem to think it was anything to be concerned about.

On our third day there, a breaker flipped shutting off all of the electrical outlets in the room because we had the iron plugged in while the hair dryer was running. It took over an hour for someone to show up. It turns out that the breaker panel is in the closet.

The service at the restaurants is outstanding, but the food is really not great -- even at the "best" restaurants -- except for the fruit, which is local.

Room Tip: If you are here on an incentive trip, get the upgrade. You'll get a nicer room and access to a p...

I'm going to provide some background information to best understand my review. This was not my first trip to Costa Rica but it was the first time with my wife and 2 year old boy.
The grounds were perfect, clean, well manicured and spacious. I did see some people complain about the distance between buildings, but for us we loved the daily walks around the resort grounds and you could get a ride but we rarely did. Howler Monkeys, Iguanas and those crazy Pisotes were all over the resort. The pool was clean and warm, great for our whole family. Breakfast daily was great, I had the made to order omelet. We found the room service was delivered within an hour after ordering. We loved the gazpacho, tuna and club sandwich from room service. The baby sitting service was wonderful when we left the resort or just had a couple of dinners alone, thanks Priiss Moreno Ruis for taking care of our little boy. The restaurants were good, but not what I would consider great compared to good dinning in a world class city, but still good. Service was almost perfect and that is saying something since we dined with children most meals.
Some little things to consider, the beaches are public and you will encounter local entrepreneurs while existing the resort grounds. Everyone was pleasant even if persistent. The people of Costa Rica were educated with a little english and polite everywhere, no problems with a little spanish and english. If you order wine don't expect a bottle at dinner unless you pay extra, it's one glass at a time. In your room they will stock your fridge with water, juices, soft drinks and four beers daily. This was a family trip for us however if I wanted mixed drinks in the room you may want to pick up a bottle duty free at the airport rather then running to the one bar that will be open or ordering one drink per meal via room service. You can save some money by booking side trips thru the guys on the beach.
The room was large enough for the three of us and our two year old was in a crib by the dinner table. This worked well he was not able to see us during the night and we were able to read without interrupting his sleep.
Off the resort we did a nature boat ride as a family and had a great time Costa Rica has done a wonderful job taking care of it's natural beauty. We also went zip lining with other couples and had a great time. Sunset from the beach should not be missed if you can help it and don't let a day go by without a little pool time.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor and it was perfect if traveling with a child.

We had a wonderful time at the westin in the royal beach club. A great upgrade that was well worth the price. Food options were excellent and plentiful. The pools were well staffed and the service throughout the resort was top notch. I thought the resort was going to be too big to walk around and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as big as it appeared online.

My wife and I have stayed here twice, both times around the Christmas holidays. The resort is beautiful with lots of plants and wild animals running around. The food is good at all of the restaurants, including the buffet.

We participated in a couple of classes, cooking and coffee tasting. Both were fun and informative. There are also free bikes to use, which we used to tour around the property.

The beach feels endless and is great for long walks. The water is warm but the current can be strong so be careful. There are a number of vendors near the beach and you can get a great massage for $30 while listening to waves, birds and monkeys.

The pool is huge, with warm soft water. We would spend our evenings here.

We will definitely return to this resort.

This review is for a late November 2013 stay. My wife and three teenage sons went to the Westin Playa Conchal to celebrate my son's 15th birthday. The resort is beautiful, well maintained and on a nice beach. The kids loved the all-inclusive aspect and were ordering food pretty much throughout the day...they even ordered a steak via room service at 1AM! We ate at the Italian, Asian, Latin and buffet restaurants for dinner. The Italian and Asian were our favorites and found the Latin and buffet to be just OK. As others have stated it is key to reserve your restaurants as soon as you get there because they get filled up quick. Actually the resort staff was kind enough to allow us to reserve the Italian restaurant for the first night of our stay, a week prior to our arrival.

The staff was excellent and there are two main living areas at the resort. If you are going as a couples only, I definitely recommend staying in that part of the resort. Great service and access to the Italian restaurant for breakfast. Also, you have an adults only pool. In my opinion, the entertainment aspect lacks a little as far as active nightlife is concerned, but they do have a small bar/lounge that has a DJ everynight and we met some cool couples at the venue. Not a lot for teens to do in my opinion (especially at night)...but we are from Miami, so probably a lot of kids/teens that live in cold weather climates are more than content to be by the beach/pools.

For a family or as a couple excursions are a must. We used Memo Adventures and I can tell you that Memo the owner is 100% committed to customer service. He was extremely responsive to all of my e-mails leading up to our trip and answered all of my questions. We booked a deep sea fishing tour and all day zip line, horseback riding, mud baths, etc. tour. First the good: The zip line adventure day was amazing and the whole family had a great time. Additionally, Memo was our guide and he did a fabulous job and had everything perfectly arranged. Now the Bad: The fishing trip was a disaster (no fault of Memo...he basically finds a boat that is available and you go at it), and not even close to what we expected. First it was pretty expensive. Second it was ridiculously windy that day and in my opinion the trip should have been cancelled due to the wind alone. Lastly: me and the kids were actually expecting to do some active fishing but since it was deep sea fishing their technique is to mount 4 fishing rods in the boat, and keep the lines in the water till something bites (only one did and the mate grabs the rod, hooks the fish and then hands the rod to one of the kids to reel it in.) The rest of the trip we were tossed about on the boat and didn't catch a thing. Mid way through, my wife and kids were sleeping.

In general the biggest tip I can give is to fly into Liberia. We flew into San Jose and it is a 4 hour trip one way. What a mission!
