“Wonderful return to CR”

My wife and I took children and grandchildren back to CR to consider building on property we own. We used this property as a focal point of trip and it worked out just fine. Wonderful staff on site and people with intelligent advice available. Kids loved the pool and fact we were just a short distance, by foot or car, from beaches and wonderful inexpensive restaurants. We look forward to our return to CR in October.

“Wonderful Accommodation for a Peaceful Vacation”
Reviewed 15 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

We stayed at El Tucan, the 4th of 4 units in Stef Surf. It was just as pictured, lush and lovely gardens, private, clean and spacious home. Excellent communication and pre-arrival information. Good A/C, important for the hottest month of the year!! Working wifi. The pool is great - super long for laps if you are so inclined. What makes this place great, however, is the attentive work of the caretakers, Edwin, Francisco, and Marling, who are so friendly and helpful. The pool is cleaned twice a day, for goodness sake! Your patio and walkways swept at least daily!
The icing on the cake was Lis - good heavens, she made our stay perfect. She stopped by our 2nd morning (Monday) and told us about all kinds of things we could do and stayed in contact by text. She booked a sunset sail/ snorkel trip and tours/ lunch at El Viejo Wetlands. Both were great. She also arranged for a rental car to be brought to us. We hadn't initially wanted to rent, but found the driving to be quite easy. Roads aren't marked by number, rather all intersections have arrows pointing to where you want to go - how simple is that? Waze works too, which we used to make our way to the wetlands - beware the gravel roads ...
One thing I didn't anticipate was how dirty/dusty it is here in the dry season. Your feet will get dirty if you wear sandals, otherwise your shoes will get dirty. There are no sidewalks and many roads are unpaved, especially if walking to restaurants or the beach - which is simple to do from here. Also, it gets dark pretty early, so don't forget a flashlight when heading out to dinner on foot ( there was one by the door, but I had my mini headlamp.) One great thing about this area is that it is a mix of traditional and newer development. It is easy to get a feel for the real Costa Rica here.
Groceries are very expensive nearby, but much more reasonable at the MegaSuper nearer Tamarindo. The groceries sell beer, wine, and spirits -- sweet!
The beaches are lovely, quite undeveloped, and mostly lacking shade. If you like to hang out on the beach, a portable shade would be really nice. Playa Potrero has enough slope to it that walking with a bad knee is a little uncomfortable. Each beach is a little different. We really liked Playa Grande, Playa Dante, and Playa Prieta.
We found some great places to eat, including the Shack, Casa Celeste, Hibiscus, and the Surf Box. Beware of the naughty howler monkeys dropping half- eaten mangos on the metal roof at the Shack!

“Stef Surf was a perfect place for all of us”
Reviewed 19 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

Relaxing, clean, laid-back place to enjoy the beach or the pool, read a book, wander the streets, talk to the friendly people everywhere, make breakfast in the kitchen, enjoy quiet in one of the porch nooks. Our family included a variety of ages, and there was sufficient space for everyone in the condo. Beds were comfortable. Nice showers. Had a phone and wifi as needed. Value was good for the price. The concierge, Lis, and the housekeeper, Edwin, were totally supportive and helpful, making our trip very memorable and harmonious.

“Everything It Says It Will Be”
Reviewed 7 March 2016 for a stay in February 2016

We had a wonderful 12 days at Stef Surf. Spacious, comfortable, clean, well equipped and attractive accommodations set in a secure garden with lovely pool, loungers, rancho with seating and jacuzzi. This place is only a couple of minutes walk from a nice long beach - only nice but there are some absolutely gorgeous beaches within a short drive - , grocery store and several bars and restaurants. We had coffee on our upper deck every morning and enjoyed watching the birds and listening to the waves on the beach. The view is the trees for the most part. We heard howler monkeys a few times too. We found Stef Surf to be an excellent base to explore the many gorgeous beaches in the area. Playa Dante was a favourite for us and where we enjoyed our last sunset for this visit to CR. The restaurant on the beach with a store next door for rentals, lockers and washrooms meant you had everything needed. We snorkelled very successfully there. Playa Grande and Playa Avelanas also shouldn't be missed. We found Tamarindo was too busy in general - we live a very rural lifestyle so not used to busyness - but we had some nice food there. Our son went spear fishing with the excellent Gauthier, Freedive Costa Rica, 3 times out of the marina just up the beach or down the road and we cooked up his catch for supper. We went out on a fishing trip too but it was tough fishing given the season. Stef Surf is in the heart of a subdivision which makes it convenient but a little niggling down side was barking dogs that I think arrived at a nearby home a few days into our trip. The local mutts don't bark much so I am sure these were vacationing dogs. We were able to always have a peaceful nights sleep though in a very comfortable, firm bed. Fransisco is always around keeping an eye on things and doing upkeep. My husband visited with him daily to work on his Spanish. We thoroughly recommend Stef Surf as a lovely vacation rental in a convenient location. It is also less than an hour form Liberia airport which was nice for us after a long day travelling.
FYI February is summer and is hot, sunny, dry and often quite windy in this part of CR. The ocean currents are also a little cooler. Many of the trees were blooming or starting to bloom when we were there.
