“Another fair review”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

My wife, my two kids and myself stayed for one night. Price was $104 breakfast included. We received very good service, all the personnel were very kind when we asked for stuff (extra pillow, towels, etc...) We ate at its restaurant and the prices were reasonable and the food was good. The room was very clean, I have never paid extra for a room with ocean view, but in this hotel every room has an outstanding panoramic view which in other places would cost at least $100 extra..
Now, the hotel looks old and in need of restoration. no flat panel TV but an old CRT, A/C worked but was noisy and is obvious it is an old model. No keycards for the room but regular keys. Breakfast was not up to the place, it looked cheap and some corners were cut to reduce cost (no orange juice but an orange flavored beverage for example).
There is a new administration running the place, it could improve over time.

My friend and I visit El Sabanero for lunch last week. The view is stunning from the the entrance! It was too windy to sit on the nice terrace. Therefore we sat inside.Still great view. The waiter was very friendly and suggest a chicken salad. It was delicious. The house wine was perfect for a relaxing lunch. We also had a cup of coffee which they serve South American style with milk in it already. I like it!
The manager speak very good English, German and some other languages.
I would go there again!

I have stayed at El Sabanero twice. This hotel is totally worth it if you like wonderful views and prime location. It is right in the center of the best beach in Guanacaste (Flamingo Beach), and located near great beaches such as Conchal, Carrillo, Danta, Tamarindo, etc, as well as fine dining and access to outdoor activities.

However, if you pay the full rate of $225 a night, one can say it is way overpriced. A fair rate is more like $120 a night.

The so-called private beach is not private. It is said to be private because there is no way to reach it unless you go through hotel property.

Breakfast is just OK. It is composed of "Gallo Pinto", a mix of rice and beans prepared Costa Rican style, scrambled eggs, fruit (papaya, pineapple and watermelon), coffee toasts and juice.

The facilities are OK. As a whole, the hotel does need serious updating. The rooms hear the lobby are decent, but the ones in the basement are not. In general, the place is clean, but not shiny and sparkly by any means.

The pool is cleaned every morning, but given the fact that there are palm trees and grass around it, it is common to see lots of leaves and debris on the water. Nothing one needs to worry about.

This hotel has been under new management since January 2013 so they are trying to improve it. Staff was changed since I visited in December 2012. The new members are very friendly and helpful. Management has lots of experience in many different countries, so it is expected to see positive changes in the near future.

Lastly, this hotel is not for people who like luxury or diamond shaped sparkles everywhere. If you are one of those people who would like to feel like a Royal, there are other alternatives such as the Flamingo Beach Resort, Tamarindo Diria Hotel in Tamarindo Beach and Melia Conchal at Playa Conchal.

Further away from the beach, but still close enough, there are Hacienda Pinilla Hotel and RIU Hotel.

My rating for this hotel as it stands today is of two and a half stars.

I hope this fair review serves to anyone who is looking to get more information and less complains about El Sabanero.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms near the swimming pool, not in the basement. From those you can open your door and jum...

we just arrived and Joseph the manager was welcoming and a nice guy... but it's a place to avoid!!. It is dirty and run down. The pool has lots of leaves and insect bodies floating and lots more on the bottom. Our room is very basic and there are no facilities like a fridge or kettle- in fact there's not a glass. The wardrobe doors don't slide properly. We'll try to find another place tomorrow

Room Tip: Don't check in

The staff were nice but this hotel is in no way worth what they charge. There is no wifi in the rooms, no blankets on the beds (only a top sheet), and they lack even the most basic amenities. I would in no way recommend this hotel, all there flaws can be easily overlooked if one were staying in a hostel or a lower end hotel but because of the price and location it was extremely frustrating.

Room Tip: Just go to Tamarindo, it has a better environment, greater selection and greater value for your mone...

So sorry to say but this place is disgusting. We booked a room through booking.com. We were told there was a private beach, air conditioning and a beautiful view of the water. WRONG
We were 2 floors down in the basement with no lights on either the stairs or the hallway. The air conditioning didn't work and it was 88 degrees. Oh yes, the mattresses were in the shape of a V no exaggeration no sleep here. The beach was not accessible with about 200 steps down on broken stairs. Tried to get some compensation back, the owner was very rude and blames booking.com. I have tried to reach booking.com but can't. They also didn't put my review on line - wonder why. The waiter was very nice. This is the only positive thing I can say so WATCH OUT.
