“A GREAT VALUE”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2011

PGI is a very good value. It's perfectly clean and the hotel central pool area is a great hangout for taking a break from the beach. We enjoyed the ping pong table, pool table and foosball. Justen, the manager, is easy going and always wanting to help with any needs. Jason, the restaurant manager, was great and enjoyed making tasty food and sitting around and talking. Currently there is a fruit and soy smoothing bar owned by Rita and those were excellent. The hotel staff is very easy going. The beer is cold and reasonably priced.
The Playa Grande beach is the place to be for surfing. It’s the best low tide Frisbee beach I’ve played on in many years.
I would and will stay there again.
Comments:
The rooms are no nonsense: clean beds, a small table and 2 chairs. The A/C worked well. There is nothing else in the room. There isn’t an ice machine at the hotel.

You can’t see the beach from the hotel. Nor can any other hotels in the area. The beach is a short walk through the trees.

If you’re an early riser, there is no nearby food/drink available until 8 AM.
Food isn't cheap, but Costa Rica beyond street food isn't cheap so PGI was in the middle price wise

Stayed at PGI from Thanksgiving thru the first week in December. Went with my father and brother, both non surfers and first time visitors to Costa Rica. We could not have had a better time. The hotel was perfect. Clean rooms everyday and A/C. The staff was great and always available for any request. Great place to just hang out and forget about the world. The pool, bar and restaurant are all there for you. Great food and a great place to relax with some cold beers. Justen (new owner) was available for advice on what to see and do in Costa Rica for the first timers. His advice was priceless. He helped us set up deep sea fishing and an excursion zip lining. Both amazing. At the PGI you become a "Local" as soon as you check in and the entire staff make you feel right at home. Just wake up and wander to the beach to surf whenever you get the urge. Just a few minutes walk down a sand path and great surfing as far as the eye can see. I will be back to the PGI!

This is by far the best place in Playa Grande. The rooms are great, the amenities are too, rooms were cleaned at the appropriate times, and the staff/owners are amazing.

Every day was spent lingering in the restaurant/lounge area until the urge to hit the beach took over. The music selection everywhere was limited to reggae, i.e. Bob Marley's Greatest Hits, but at one point Justin just let us play our own music. Christian (one of the staff members) was a bit selective about the tracks, but had a great sense of humor about the songs he did/didn't like, while going through the playlist.

The bar stayed open as late as we needed them to, and we were always the ones to close it down. It's hard to turn down a good game of beer pong. Definitely recommend the pizza, as well as the freshly baked goods with coffee in the morning.

The Marbar and RipJack are next door, and good, but everyone ends up back at PGI because it's the best.

This is an excellent place to stay in playa grande. Myself and 2 friends stayed here for a surf trip for a week with no complaints. The beach is very short walk down the street and a sand path, not even 5 min. Very clean, housekeeping everyday, pool, outside shower, wifi, great working a/c and very friendly and helpfull people. I recommend this hotel to anyone. Those that dont have a car this hotel has its own bar and resturant and the food is great. And a short walk down the street is Keke's resturant a must try. The only thing missing was a small frig to keep things cool in the costa rican heat but drinks are always available at the bar.

Do yourself a favor and stay (and eat and play) here. I've never written a review for hotels or anything else before, but I felt compelled to do so in this case, especially since we used TripAdvisor to find and settle on PGI. And Jason and Justen and their families and everyone else who worked here were so genuinely hospitable!

The layout of the hotel is great. The pool is nice and clean and has a sunny deck area. It's adjacent to the central bar/restaurant area which has ping pong and pool tables, and extends in to a common area with lounge seating and a hammock. It's a great place for relaxing any time of day, whether sipping (good) coffee from the honor-system coffee station, using wifi, reading, or having a drink or some food. In the mornings there is a smoothie stand which also has wheatgrass shots, espresso drinks & yummy baked goods. Marbar next door is great if you're looking for a full breakfast. The hotel rooms are comfortable and very clean and have A/C and ceiling fans. The beach is just a short walk away, and Justen even let us borrow boogie boards.

We were there for a wedding that was taking place at the RipJack, and even though only 4 of us were staying at PGI, we ended every evening there with our crew of 10 to 20+ people, because the food, atmosphere, and service were so much better than any of the other options. The wood-fired pizza is delicious and very affordable! We were addicted and ate it almost every night. Jason took great care of us, and even brought his wife and adorable daughter to an evening get-together we had at a house down the street that some of our group was renting. He also graciously let a few people ride along with him to the grocery store & ATM since there aren't any within walking distance and we didn't have a rental car.

This is the perfect hotel for a laid-back surfing destination!

We took our kids (ages 8 and 11) for a week of surfing and relaxing in Playa Grande. We had the most amazingly wonderful week. Our room was simple but perfect. Three beds and a bathroom - always clean with working AC. We always felt safe and the hotel was nice a quiet. We spent our days at the beach (Justin even let us borrow a surf board) and our evenings at the hotel's open air restaurant/bar playing games with the kids (plenty of kid games and books provided by the hotel) or just swimming in the pool.
The housekeepers were wonderful and the restaurant / hotel staff treated us like family. At $50 a night we could afford to enjoy plenty of yummy brick oven pizza and cervezas!

I should have written this review a couple of months ago. My boyfriend and I visited Playa Grande in august 2010, a short period after the take over of this hotel. As this was start of the rainy season (ie end of tourist season) we were the only guests here. I can only conclude that our stay was great (the best in CR actually). We arrived in playa grande and initially booked a room at Hotel Las Tortugas. When we saw what they had to offer (small, mouldy room) we immediately left and thats how we came across the Playa Grande Inn. The hotel is super cosy, the bar and pool area are beautiful and warm (exactly the way I would decorate it if it were mine), the rooms were spacious (good beds) also very cosy and it was really clean (this is always really important to me). The (new) owners really made us feel at ease, no pressure, but at the mean time they were always there when we had any questions or when we needed advise on the planning of our trip... If you're looking for a GENUINE, warm, friendly, cosy place to stay, this is it. We occasionally took breakfast at the Rip Jack Inn (or Rip Jack off as we called it + unfriendly staff), but this hotel cannot in any way compare to the Playa Grande Inn. I recommend this hotel to everybody, families, couples, friends. The people are great, the rooms are great, the atmosphere is great, don"t stay anywhere else when visiting Playa Grande. I loved this hotel. Oh and the chef is BRILLIANT!!!!!!! (but you probably already got this from the other reviews)
