Been to several beach inns and this is the best I have found. If you want the Hilton, than check in to one. Justin and the staff were great and Justin cooks a great set of ribs. Clean rooms and comfortable. Raw Bar and Marbar have very good food and portions. I certainly will go back especially during turtle season as we were late. Thank you

I stayed here mid-February 2013.

As soon as I got to PGI, the manager was incredibly friendly and laid back. The rooms were spartan, but clean, and appeared to be well maintained. There was no smell of mold like at Las Tortugas. For $50 dollars a night I didn't expect anything more than a clean, safe place to sleep, and I got it.

The bar was excellent with a great atmosphere. The food was similarly excellent. The pool was well maintained and clean. I had no complaints about PGI. The atmosphere and excellent customer service on the part of the manager made this a better than average experience. If I ever go back to this area I will stay here.

We have been travelling since the early 70's...South America on 5 and 10 dollars a day, Mexico, the Caribbean, North America and Europe and latterly Central America and now I' m thinking of quitting Trip Advisor because of the pettiness some of the reviewers.
I am a room snob; have paid mega bucks for a postage stamp room in NY cityand a lot for good accommodation in other US cities and more than expected for dingy rooms in motels and other establishments...but usually the total experience of the vacation outweighs the negatives of the accommodation.
So, Playa Grande Inn is what it is...a budget hotel with character and soul. We, as older well seasoned travellers have not had a negative experience,

We stayed at the PGI the first week of February 2013. We were just looking for a basic place near the water and loved the idea that the beach is protected for the turtles, so we knew it would be quiet. Justin, Lindsay, Lynn, Johnny, and the rest of the staff were warm and welcoming. Anything we needed Justin provided. The food is a step up from bar food and affordable for Playa Grande. The juice bar in another added benefit. Justin holds different gatherings for evening entertainment. We were there during Super Bowl, PGI had the only party and everyone turned out. There was also a poker night and a BBQ night. Laid back, fun, we got to know the locals. It was all very welcoming and fun, which was all we were looking for. The pool was a benefit on the hot afternoons if we were around. We created our own adventures during the day. Yoga with Annie at the Rip Jack outside was great! Walks on the beach and over to Tamarindo for shopping. Massage at Frijole Locos. Make sure you do a canoe trip with Jonathan up the estuary. It was excellent! We don't surf Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor. On nights were were too tired to hang in the bar, we just brought cha...

I absolutely loved my stay at PGI. This place is truly special because of the staff. They are all very welcoming and they treat you as their own. They have an on-site Raw Juice Bar perfect for morning juice, granola, and smoothies. Then it's only a two minute walk to the beautiful coast where you can surf or just relax on the beach. After watching the breath-taking sunset you can head back to PGI for a very yummy dinner and then finish the night off with cocktails at the bar! I can't wait to go back and wouldn't stay anywhere else!

Just returned from 6 days in Playa Grande. I didn't stay at PGI however I was a frequent customer of the bar/restaurant.

The Raw Juice bar is great for smoothies, granola bars and juice in the morning.

I ate dinner several times at PGI and had cocktails almost every night. The food is solid. Pizza, tacos, nachos were all very good and just as good as you would get back in the states, if not better.

The service at PGI is great. Justen is the man. If you ask, he will deliver it. He takes care of his guests and patrons. The people of Playa Grande are great. If you come to Costa and show respect the people will absolutely take care of you.

Can't wait to come back to Grande next year!!

Just back from my 2nd stay in 2 months at the Playa Grande Inn. Im a New Yorker and world traveler and have stayed at a wide range of tropical locations. Something special about this place will make you want to return again and again.

First a bit about Playa Grande itself. Beautiful location, wide sweeping beach, amazing sunsets, sleepy little town, definitely not over developed like other parts of Costa. If you are either an avid or improving surfer, this is the place for you. Extremely consistent surf- surf every day. Many peaks, A frame waves and a sand bottom mean you can spread out and enjoy. Range of surf shops so you can rent high quality boards (save the airline board fee) and pick up anything you may need. Enough small restaurants and bars to give you a destination and variety but very unassuming. Feels very far away from the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo, but easily accessible if you crave the occasional night out on the town. Locals and expats all extremely friendly and welcoming.

Now to PGI. I have stayed in almost every option of accommodation in Playa Grande, from the $3000/week homes on the beach to the $125/night "suites" and Playa Grande Inn has become my go to place to stay. I will preface this by saying, it really depends on what you are looking for - nothing fancy here, but perfect for what i was looking for. I am a solo lady traveler, in Playa Grande to improve my surf. PGI is super close to the beach, easy on the pockets for longer surf trips, Justen (the manager), Lindsay, Lynn and the staff are extremely friendly, always looking out for you and trying to ensure you are comfortable and happy. Lynn's smoothies, juices and granola (try her yogurt bowl) are great after an early surf session. The outdoor shower to wash off from the beach is very convenient and refreshing. The pool is not large but a huge luxury during the hot middays when your waiting it out for high tide for the waves to work. Hammocks and sofa in the common area are great for lounging.

Justen is always hosting some sort of mellow event, from football bbqs to poker nights which gives you the option to get to know other guests or some of the locals and expats if you choose. take it from someone who usually stays to her self, this is amazing group of people you should let yourself get to know.

rooms are nothing fancy, but clean and safe. justen is always fighting the fight to improve the place and when I was there last month ordered brand new tvs for common area and some brand new air conditioners for the rooms (critical as it gets hot midday). rooms are not large but are comfortable, most with desks, and all with high speed internet access. i stayed on the top floor which i believe was a bit more quiet than the bottom rooms. I have also stayed in the 2bedroom apartment with kitchen which i would recommend a splurge on.

long story short, i would highly recommend for your next surf trip. people were great, unbeatable location, super friendly consistent waves, great vibe. relatively no frills though, laid back, not for the prima donna.

Room Tip: 2nd floor more quiet. ask for room with a new AC. definitley recommend a splurge for the 2 bdrm ap...
