We were very pleased with Villa Olivia--it was exactly as promised. Right on the beach (part of a national park) with beautiful, tropical grounds; very comfortable rooms, and friendly, personable staff. If you are looking for a spacious family retreat, right on the beach, this is it. There are 4 bedrooms, two up, two down, each with a full bath, and an extra bath in the common area (there is a 5th bedroom/studio upstairs, but we did not rent it). The kitchen has everything you need to prepare dinner, with an outdoor grill area and outdoor dining area. Hammocks are everywhere, so no fights over who gets the hammock. And, since the beach is right out the front door, no loading up to go to the beach, because it's right there. Grab a morning cup of coffee and relax on the rockers on the front porch, or in a beach chair on the sand, or walk down the (almost deserted) beach. As we were there in February, the dry season, the insects were scarce, so we barely used the 3 cans of spray we brought. However, because Costa Rica is only slightly north of the equator, we did use almost all the sunblock we took with us, and still got a slight sunburn in places. Did I mention that Villa Olivia is right on the beach? Sure, there are houses on either side, but you scarcely notice them, with all the lush tropical foliage. The coast line in Guanacaste is made up of many small beaches, each different. Some can only be reached on foot or boat, and some you can drive to. While exploring Pirate's Beach (about 15 miles north of Playa Grande) we had the good luck to see a troupe of monkeys leisurely crossing the road, one at a time, via a cable hung for just that purpose. Another day, the Villa Olivia property manager arranged a day trip to Rincon, where we bathed in hot volcanic mud, soaked in hot/warm/cool volcanic pools, rode horses, zip-lined, and walked through a hanging-bridge nature trail to see monkeys, parrots, and other tropical birds.
Some tips: Take beach or swim shoes. The sand can be extremely hot mid-day.
Take lots of sunscreen. All roads may not be paved; don't be taken aback by it. Explore! Arrange for Kimberly to make dinner for you one night. It's worth it! If you are a picky eater, try something new! If you can't, then stop in Liberia at the big-box style "Jumbo" grocery store and stock up on what you need; the smaller 'super compras' closer to Playa Grande don't carry everything. Ice in drinks is not a given, and it melts quickly. Don't expect everything to be just like home (where ever that may be). This is Costa Rica, and it's different, and it's all good. La Pura Vida.

“Escape from it all.....off the beaten path and we can't wait to return”

What an amazing week we had at Villa Olivia. This property literally sits right on the beach. Every day we woke up at 5AM to the sound of howler monkeys (yes you can hear them over the a/c in the rooms), had coffee on the veranda and never changed out of our bathing suits. The Villa is perfect but it is fairly remote so you either need to rent a car (we did not have one) or hook up with Kimberly the housekeeper/cook who will make you the most amazing meals. We had her cook for us for most breakfasts and dinners while we were there (extra change) and its worth every penny. We enjoyed our meals on the veranda without having to put on shoes or change out of our swim attire. Playa Grande beach is spectacular. Seashells everywhere and we even found 2 sand dollars. The house itself was perfect for our group of 9 people with each bedroom having a/c and its own bathroom. Night time brought lots of crabs so make sure to shut your doors. We took a full day tour with Don Myron grant from Get Lost in Costa Rica (it was fantastic) and we went zip lining, rafting, mud baths and to the waterfall. We also did a sunset sail through Don on the Manta Ray Catamaran and it was epic (reviews to follow). As far as the house goes, pack a few bathing suits, lots of suntan lotion, a beach cover up and your sense of adventure. Enjoy walking to Taco Star, drink Imperial on the veranda while watching glorious sunsets and let Kimberly and Marianela (the Property Mgr) take care of you....I promise you won't be sorry. PS: If you are looking for a place to go where you will be served cocktails with an umbrella in them by a pool boy this isn't it. We miss it already and we just got back yesterday! Pura Vida.

“Perfect Spot on the beach”

Our family of 6 would highly recommend Villa Olivia and Playa Grande. We felt so lucky to have picked this spot, and would return for sure. Marianella and Kimberly and the other staff members were wonderful and helpful, and we loved Corina Corina (the guard dog) as well. The location is really fabulous. We had all kinds of people asking us where we found this gem. The bedrooms all have ensuite bathrooms and comfortable beds and AC. The patio with 6 rocking chairs and 2 hammocks was a favorite spot to chill. We had Kimberly cook for us several times, and she made delicious meals. The house was very clean and everything worked perfectly. The waves directly out in front of our house were great for boogie boarding--but do watch for the riptide. This would be a great place for bigger families, or a couple families as well. It was perfect for us.
