The hotel has a perfect situation on the beach! And that is the most positive thing about this hotel...
I stayed here 10 years ago and then it was friendly, cosy and well kept. That is all gone now and it seems worn out, smelling moulded and some of the staff seems to be unhappy and not interested in serving the guests at all. The menu in the restaurant is small and the food is nothing to "write home about".
The garden is a ruin! The pool is outdated! The owner is drunk most of the time! There are several other hotels on this beach that is a better choice!

Hotel is on the beach. Room is spacious, although some light bubs were not replaced and the room was somewhat dark. Room is clean and I felt safe. Some front desk personnel were very helpful, while others were just average with the feeling that you were asking too many questions. The beach is good, but nothing special or something you would say wow. Other beaches (in other countries) that I had visited are nicer. Like other tourist beaches, people try to sell you excursions. Here they were trying to sell scuba excursions. However, it seemed there was a lot of selling and it became quite annoying, although not the fault of the hotel. Hotel El Velero probably should clean the beach in front of the hotel. The town is small. Not much eating options. Taxi to coco with more restaurants and a super market is about $10 or 5,000 colones. There is no shuttle to the airport. Taxi is about $40 or 20,000 colones. The reason I stayed here was based on the fact that it was closer to Liberia airport and the beach is nicer than coco. Wanted a place on the beach and was cheaper than others places in other areas that I saw. Maybe expecting a little more, based on other reviews. Overall would recommend, but can't compare to other beach areas in Guanacaste such as Playa Flamingo or Tamarindo.

This is a great option if you are flying into Liberia. It's 20 minutes from the airport and right on the beach. The restaurant is great and the staff is helpful and very friendly. The pool is very nice. Rooms are a good size and clean.

We were staying at a hotel on Playa Panama, just 5 kilometers from Hermosa so came down to explore. Well, Hermosa is small and not too much in way of shopping but we found this hotel to have a great bar, with very friendly staff. It was beginning to rain so we decided to have a drink in the bar, which overlooks the beach. There were several other people there, tourists, ex-pats, and locals and it turned to be so much fun we stayed most of the afternoon, had some lunch, some more beers and then when happy hour started some gin and tonics. It was great fun, the people were friendly, and the food was very good. Highly suggest to visit. The hotel looked very nice as well. Maybe we will stay there next time.

We were delighted with our stay at El Velero. The position right on the beach was excellent. We liked the food, relaxed atmosphere and easy going staff. The hotel was very well kept and the library area was a firm favourite with all the family with its rocking chairs and views to the sea - a good spot to watch the thunderstorms!

We came to the beach during rainy season. Our books scared us away were from staying at other beaches. We ended up taking a day trip to Nosara and found that area more exciting! While the hotel and beach at El Velero were nice, I wish we had spent more time in Nosara because the roads were not as bad as the books made them seem like they would be. The El Velero staff were wonderful and nice. The food at the place was pretty good too, which was fortunate given that we ate many meals there. The rooms were alright. The view from the rooms were terrible (a wall) and an outdoor light kept us up at night. My kids LOVED this hotel because it had a TV. We had 18 people with us, 10 kids (ranged 9-18) and every kid LOVED the place. There are great snorkling sights available near the hotel. Ticos also come by and ask tourists if they wish to go snorkling by boat. We did both and enjoyed both. The beach is lovely. But goodness, the sand in the afternoon is HOT!!!! The hotel can also set up snorkling, zip lining and other tours. What I liked least was that I didn't feel like we were in the rain forest. I felt like we were at any beach in the US. ALSO, the restaurant across from the hotel made my entire family (and the other families too) extremely sick. Luckily, we were home before Montezuma had his revenge

We stayed for 2 nights this week, and I will tell you - the place isnt the Ritz Carlton, but it sure is a wonderful atmosphere. Mike, the owner, is a hoot. From my brief interactions he seems like a nice guy making a living keeping his place accessible to the anti-tourist crowd.

If you're looking to get away from the "tourist mob" then this hotel is for you. If you're looking for 5 star rooms, hot tubs, and spas, then maybe you should go elsewhere. The rooms weren't perfect, but they were clean and comfortable. Our room was clean, and had a digital A/C with remote control. The food was ok, the drinks were tasty and cold, and the beach was literally 20 steps from the patio. There were even free chairs for hotel guests to bring down on the beach. Now that's service!

There's a nice veranda (complete with ceiling fans, free library, and the occasional gecko on the ceiling), a small pool for the kids, a small market nearby, and plenty of good sand, surf, and sun. We made use of the veranda every evening to watch the sunset. Moments in my life I will never forget!

You're on vacation in Central America! Leave the large hotels behind. Chill out, grab a beer rom the bar, and go bodysurfing steps from your room. Everything here is relaxed and easy-going. I'm not a Jimmy Buffett fan (in fact I can't stand his songs), but if I could picture staying in a Margaritaville, this would be it!

Relax and enjoy!
