The room was okay, but housekeeping didn't come the first night.

The buffet was sub par and although the restaurant said they opened at 6:30am, at 7:15am, they were still putting food out. You are "supposed" to get 1 dinner at their fancy restaurant for every 2 nights, they only gave us one voucher even though we were there for 5 nights. You then have to make reservations with the buffet restaurant on the morning that you want to go for dinner. When we went at 7:15am to breakfast and confirm dinner, they already said they were sold out for that night. We went by the restaurant on multiple days and all the tables were empty.

Not worth the money spent and you may also want to stay in Playa del Coco or Arenal for better scenery.

Finally, the shuttle service around the resort is non-existent. We called to have someone pick up and they never came. We never relied on them again.

Wifi is only available at the main hotel building in the reception area, not even 50 feet away or in your room!!!!

This resort was overall average and didn't make any effort to standout. The only exception was the customer service of front desk person Adrianna. She was superb and a delight to work with. Either they find away to clone her or hire 50 more employees just like her otherwise they aren't saying much AT ALL! One particular staff person named Bob from Scotland was particularly rude and unprofessional when he yelled at my friend and I and banged his fist on the table upset with us when we declined to purchase a timeshare. He told us WE WASTED HIS TIME!! and that the poor service we received was because we were not owners therefore not important to please. He snapped at us further when he lamented "fine! Continue to travel like you do" I wasn't a aware there was anything wrong with how I currently travel. I'm pretty well traveled in this world from Asia to Europe, Africa, Central and North America and never before have I been yelled at and made to feel bad by the people I trusted to show me hospitality. Aside from this they try to cheat you left in right in this country, and they don't want to accept their own money some places. The housekeepers stole my favorite lipstick and it should be noted that every decent and nice person I met outside the hotel was not from Costa Rica at all but neighboring Nicaragua. I could go on but I won't I think I left you all with enough to make an informed decision. Save yourself the trouble and skip this place and section of Costa Rica altogether

Stay away from this place, you can honestly find a cleaner, nicer with much better customer service and food at a different all inclusive very close by! Our room was not clean, the food was not very good, the service was horrible and the staff coordination was just plain bad!

Reviewing this resort is challenging....there was nothing "bad" about the property, but nothing particularly "great" either. Much of the positive and negative statements made in other reviews are a matter of perspective. You need to consider that this is Central America, not Mexico or Jamaica. The level of service, variety of food, etc. are not comparable - so don't try to compare them!
Also, it is important to consider that this is a relatively small and inexpensive resort....it is not fair to complain about lack of facilities if you knowingly booked a small resort!
We enjoyed our stay, and I hope the following helps you to decide whether this property is right for you.

Our room was in one of the many villas dotting the hillside. Very nice, clean, and modern, but not "luxurious". Yes, the walk up and down the hill can get tiring (particularly after a long session at the pool bar), but the hotel portion is very centrally located if you want less walking, and the shuttles are very efficient. We had rented a car for the week, and had no problems with free parking anywhere on the property.
We spoke with lots of guests staying in the hotel and the larger villas, and everyone was happy with their accommodations.

The food at the buffet was certainly good, but fairly repetitive from day to day and meal to meal. In other Central American countries I've noticed the same thing.....ingredients are somewhat limited, and meals are generally simple (meat dishes, mixed vegetables, rice, potatoes, and plantain). Lots of nice fruit and cold salads, but the hot items weren't awe inspiring. The service in the buffet restaurant was variable....some days there were water pitchers, some days there weren't. Some days breakfast was ready at 7:00, some days it was 7:15 before the hot trays were filled.
The a la carte restaurant was great, and the service was excellent. We would have eaten dinner there more often if we could.
The grill by the pool bar was a nice option, although again sometimes the selections and hours weren't as advertised.

The main pool is very nice, the small pool in front of the hotel is more suited for kids or lounging beside.

From what we heard, Internet access, room service, and laundry are very expensive. There are lots of restaurants off site that offer free WiFi.

The grounds themselves are very nice and well cared for. Lots of birds and lizards, and apparently monkeys although we didn't spot any. The walk/shuttle to the beach is pleasant, and the beach is lovely for walking, swimming, and she'll hunting past the southern end where the rock outcrops start. Very pleasant and friendly locals, and few beach vendors. The little town of Playa Hermosa has a surprising number of shops and restaurants if you want some variety, and of course the bustling tourist town of Playas del Coco is just a short cab ride away.

The area is quite beautiful and interesting..Lots of people we spoke with went on lots of different excursions and everyone had positive reviews. Having a rental car for the week was great....we toured everywhere from the Rincón volcano to Tamarindo beach. Note: car rental is very inexpensive, but the insurance is very pricey and mandatory. I used my credit card and had some of the insurance covered, but a $100 weeks rental became $300 with the liability insurance added.

Overall, it was a very good experience, but we went with realistic expectations so we weren't shocked or disappointed by anything. Small improvements in staff training and chef capabilities would go a long way to pushing the calibre of the resort up to the standards some people expect, but then again that would also likely push up the price.

Shuttle picked us up from the airport and we drove west 30 minutes to the resort. Stayed in the hotel (not the villas). AC in our first room didn't work well, and we were told by the maintenance guy that all the rooms were the same. That night, we asked for a fan because the heat was too intense for sleeping. The night desk clerk actually came to check out the room and immediately moved us to a room where the AC worked very well. Buffet was great! Staff throughout the hotel was friendly and helpful. The shuttles to the beach were very convenient. Beach itself was not exciting, but we enjoyed our time on the sand. Villas Sol has a kiosk on the beach that provides patrons with towels and soft drinks. Pool was warm and clean. Enjoyed the many activities, especially karaoke and dance lessons. For 'excitement,' we took the shuttle to Playa del Coco, about 15 minutes, a tourist beach town. Especially enjoyed the wildlife that we watched while eating at the buffet...iguanas, skunks, racoons, squirrels, and many different types of birds. Others saw monkeys too, but we didn't. The a la carte restaurant was good, but not that much better than the buffet. We drank the water from the tap and had no problems. We had a pleasant stay and I would return.

Room Tip: If you stay in the hotel, insist on a room with a view of the water.

POSITIVES: 1. The staff was very nice including our concierge Gilbert as well as our tour guides. 2. The location was beautiful and very scenic on the mountains. 3. The private pool was a really nice touch.
NEGATIVES: 1. The mandatory all inclusive fee does not include wifi. And even if you purchase the wifi, you cannot use it expect for one area of the resort. Not in your villa, not at the pools, not at the beach, not even in the reception area or dining areas. 2. Speaking of dining areas I didnt know feel like enough attention was being payed to the fact that bugs were crawling all over the foods that were not covered. There would be bugs at our table if you were the first to be seated there as well. I understand its costa rica and some bugs are to be expected but we had to leave several meals because we felt like we were being attacked by mosquitoes.. There is no indoor dining so the only other option is to order room service which is also not included in the fee. As far as the food it was nothing special and started becoming repetitive after a few days. The eggs were always runny and the waffles were hard and yes had flies on them along with the fruit. Anyway, so we tried the "a la carte" restaurant and the food was better but their you had to deal with a bunch of cats begging you for food. We mentioned it to the waiter he apologized, shooed them away but they came back again and again. I love cats but not begging me for good when I'm eating. 3. The 3/2 villa we stayed in was decent but the cable didnt work for 4 days which is just as well because there were only two small tv's. Also, the oven was not clean upon entry and was never cleaned during our stay. Speaking of cleaning, the grounds were generally clean except for the bags of trash that were left to stay over night at the end of the street of our villa. There were cats and racoons going through it nightly. We felt sorry for guests who were staying next to it. 4. When I think of a beach resort I think of a resort on the beach where it has its own private section with tables, chairs, food, maybe music, a bar etc.. Well the shuttle basically drops you off at a public beach with none of the above except maybe 9 beach chairs that you have to walk down the beach to get to. And if they are all in use, oh well.

I took pictures of the bugs, cats and trash but I dont think its necessary to post all that. Maybe I was expecting too much and stayed too long but like I said I dont need to go back until they have made significant improvements. Again, the staff was really nice especially Gilbert.

Room Tip: Dont get villas 40 or 41. Thats where they dump the trash.

We only spent 3 nights here but enjoyed our stay. The villas are very nice - modern, clean, beautiful views. The resort is on hills. Fortunately they have shuttles passing by every few minutes to go to the beach, the pools, or the restaurant. Walking could be difficult for some. The all-inclusive package includes 3 meals a day plus snacks at the restaurant. Food was good - basic typical Costa Rican fare. Atmosphere was nice. My only complaint was they only had wi-if in one small area and it was $25 for 3 days. With what we paid for the all-inclusive, that should have been included. I was not happy about that at all.
