A great place to stay & play. One of the workers - Daniel Cruz was amazing! Great worker & made us feel right at home!! The resort has transportation readily available & many excursions you can book through the hotel. We did sunset snorkeling cruise, Nicaragua day tour, & river boat cruise. All 3 were excellent.

We had one of the hotel rooms with a small balcony - very nice. The all inclusive restaurant was good. Bar did not open until 10 a.m. So no bloody marys or mimosas with breakfast. Because the hotel is situated on the side of the hill, the shuttle service to and from the beach was appreciated. Wi Fi was NOT included...so that was a negative. The concierge was wonderful and really helped us resolve an issue we had when we needed to cancel another excursion. The beach was nice with some good snorkeling. This time of the year there were lots of tiny jelly fish. Suggest bringing a long sleeve shirt to swim in. The stings were more annoying than anything; however, the next day they felt and looked like mosquito bites. Beautiful sunset view from the outdoor bar next to the restaurant.

Room Tip: The hotel requires that you climb stairs. So if you have any difficulty, make sure to get one of the rooms that is at the lower level.

STAFF: All of the staff were fantastic and very accommodating. One of the concierges, GILBERT, was especially helpful and kind to us. He happened to ride the hotel shuttle into Coco Beach with us and he visited with us on the ride. We saw him again in the town market with his children and he stopped to say hi and introduce us. How many hotel staff have you met that are that friendly and considerate?

ROOM: We stayed at the main hotel, which was very convenient to everything there and also had a fabulous balcony view of the ocean and beach. The room would have been near perfect if only we could have moved some air somehow; we asked for a fan but they didn't have any. The AC in the room doesn't "blow"...it just slowly dribbles a little cool air out. The restaurants and most of the public spaces are open air. Fortunately most of them have ceiling fans and there is usually a breeze blowing. The ice maker was broken so we tipped the bartender to give us ice for our room. We didn't have any trouble at all getting a reservation for the Helliconias restaurant.

TO DO: The beach has black sand and a mild surf. The water temperature was cooler than the Gulf of Mexico and was perfect for just bobbing in the waves. If you want to relax, so to the hotel's Paradise Spa for a "Paradise Massage" which is a medium intensity massage, in between a Swedish and a Deep Tissue massage (both also offered).

FOOD: The daily 3 free meals at the Bahia restaurant were nutritious and clean. Costa Rica is famous for recycling and you could definitely see that in their food. For example, black beans and hard boiled eggs left over from breakfast and the previous evening's supper showed up in the next day's black bean soup. One thing most Americans may miss is good old fashioned cheese. They only have queso fresco and it's so bland I thought it was tofu the first two days! No cheddar, no swiss, no American, no "normal" cheese at any time. Otherwise the bland, fresh food actually reminded me a bit of New England food. We never got an edible dessert anywhere while in Costa Rica...so strange...somebody needs to show those poor people how to make a brownie or a chocolate chip cookie! All the desserts were mealy and kind of mushy, whether it was cake or some sort of pudding or gel and they all had nutmeg and cinnamon or allspice...again, just like New England.

THE TIMESHARE PITCH: Our all-inclusive stay required us to attend a 90 minute timeshare presentation. Our salesman, Gil, was very friendly and did a wonderful job of explaining the different opportunities. Even though we didn't buy anything, we saw him later at the restaurant and he was friendly and happy to see us. Yes, of course they'd like for you to buy a timeshare...that's why they paid for your stay...but our timeshare presentation was still enjoyable, and we asked so many questions, we caused it to last beyond the required time. Gil even told us a lot about Costa Rica that we found very interesting and educational.

OVERALL: this was a very nice place to visit for a quiet few days. Without a car, your options are pretty limited though and we were getting cabin fever by the end of 3 days. You have to pay dearly for any transport outside of the resort...$60 to go into Liberia if you want to shop. Only $10 for the shuttle to the tourist traps at Coco Beach, but expect to pay about $20 for a cheap tee shirt there. Excursions begin at around $90 per person.

Room Tip: The hotel is the most centrally located and easiest place to get around from.

Playa Hermosa provided for a beautiful scenery for our Wedding. below are some pics of the
spectacular view.....not your typical hotel. Rooms were clean and the views off the balcony were to die for!!!!!!! all inclusive is a plus and the 'capitan' of the restaurant was the best..courteous! a gentleman!!!

My family and I stayed in a 2 bedroom villa. Modern, spacious, 2 balconies with spectacular ocean views. The Villas are a steep climb, great exercise, but they do have carts that run every 10 minutes or so to take you through out the resort. Grounds are very well kept, very clean, pools were very nice but smaller than I expected for this size resort. Although it was never an issue. Beach is down the hill and as shared they have transportation that takes you and picks you up. The beach is public and you do have vendors that try to entice you to go see time shares, or tours. Many a scam so send them on their way.
Villas Sol does have staff on the beach whom are very helpful, have activities, and around the bend which most people didn't realize they have complimentary water, and sodas for their guest. Its a small hut. The beach walk is beautiful, we hiked the rocks and found enclaves of secluded small beaches that were spectacular.
The mandatory all inclusive for RCI guest is my only negative. The food is ok. Some days much better than others. They have a wonderful spread of fresh fruits, breads etc.. The quality of the cuts of meat are not that great. For example a chicken dish for the night was pure chicken legs. The cost per person is to high. I have a 12 year old whom was charged at the rate which includes alcohol beverages. They need to change that to an adult rate and for people that don't drink have an option to purchase a non-alcohol package.
We enjoyed that native dishes and one day was dedicated to Costa Rica, they had a women making Tortillas and Empanadas by scratch and later had a class showing you how to make them. It was delicious.
I had read reviews about complaints to get into the small A la Cart restaurant. We had no problem with that, and once we went we decided we liked all the options at the main buffet restaurant better. The service and food was good but you only have 3 different options and the menu does not change daily. It is a small restaurant for 28 people so yes it would be a challenge to get in if you don't reserve way ahead of time. It is also used for private events such as weddings etc..
The gift shop in hotel of course was way over priced for incidentals. There is a shop in the Villas office when you first come in to the resort which was fair for incidentals, bottled water etc.. Up the road outside the resort to your left about two blocks down is a good grocery store too.
Overall it was a great trip. Gilbert from Concierge bends over backwards to make sure you and your family are happy and having a great time. Mauricio and all the staff by the pool are so much fun and full of great tips and information. We had a blast with them and loved their great attitudes.

Room Tip: Higher up the hill gives you spectacular views. some Villas have private pools but they truly are small. I would take the view!
