“Simply the best value I think we've found of any vacation”
Reviewed 25 January 2011

My wife and I read favourable reviews about the Hideaway Hotel on Tripadvisor and decided to book a 4 day stay there from January 11 to 15, 2011 as part of a week long Costa Rica vacation. We were not disappointed! The hotel is modest in size and new in appearance. It's nicely situated near the southern tip of a long beach that extends north to the town of Samara. The staff were great and we had no complaints about the meals or drinks. Doug and Rosy were incredibly friendly and helped us navigate the local fare, arrange sea kayaking to a nearby island, as well as horseback riding with a private guide though the hills along the coast, and a relaxing couples massage. Our room was spacious, inviting, and clean with a semi-private deck next to trees with howler monkeys. Judging from peeks at other nearby hotels, I would venture to say that this was the nicest in the area and definitely exceptional value for the money. Playa Samara is a 'must see' if you like beach/sun and a picturesque setting. We would recommend the Hideaway to couples seeking a quiet retreat and a relaxing getaway in this most beautiful corner of the world.

If you are looking to fly under the radar and avoid resorts at the beach in Costa Rica, consider the Hideaway Hotel. We stayed at the Hideaway for 4 nights in early January and loved it. It's tucked away, literally a two minute walk to an empty beach where we encountered only local folks and very few of them. The downtown area is about a mile, maybe two away...a perfect distance to walk on the beach (bikes would also be perfect). We spent most of our time playing in the ocean and walking to town and hiding out at the hideaway. It was perfect for us. When we did hang out at the hotel pool, we drank lovely mango margaritias and listened to Motown one day and Blues the next. I think that kind of explains the vibe of the place. We encountered just a handful of other guests, all of whom seemed to be hiding out as well. The owners are super relaxed, the rooms are clean and simple and the staff are helpful and friendly. There are monkeys in the trees surrounding the place...so much fun to watch. If you prefer fancy resorts where you enjoy having servants this might not be the place for you. We loved it.

I stayed here with my husband during our honeymoon and we really loved this place! We stayed in room 12 which in my opinion is the best room there! There was a family of monkeys that would often visit the mango trees right outside of the door which I found to be quite entertaining and spent hours watching them and taking pictures/videos right from the bed!

The rooms were modern and spacious with air, cable, fridge, comfy bed, etc...and the owners (Doug and Rosie) were super accommodating. They provided us with great information on places to eat and things to see. The food on sight was also very delicious. We really enjoyed the daily breakfast that was included and the homemade brownies and ice cream were also a wonderful treat.

The location couldn't be better. I liked how the hotel is tucked away but yet close to everything with the beach only a short walk away and many restaurants and shops only a short taxi ride away.

The only issues that I had...which were minor issues...was the water pressure in the shower. It took awhile to get all of the soap out of my hair. And the first night we had lots of ants trying to sneak in under the door. Probably because it had rained for many days straight before we got there and the first two days that we were there. But like I said..these were very minor issues and not serious enough to have a negative impact on our stay.

We would def recommend this place to other travelers thinking of visiting the Playa Samara area!!

My husband and I decided to have our very special day at the Hideaway Hotel in Samara after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor and also having seen the photos of the hotel, we were living in England at the time and wanted to have a very simple special day with a mixture of local and international guests. The initial correspondence with the owners was prompt and they seemed to be open to providing us with the day we dreamed of and we thought this would be the perfect location for a stress free and simple wedding. The challenges arrived once we started making requests that were not within their experience, and without fail every time we said what we wanted the owners suggested something else instead. This to begin with was fine, we thought they were trying to be helpful, when it came to even the face to face discussion we had with Doug at the beginning of December at the hotel where we thought everything had been agreed and there was no further discussion necessary, this was later questioned by Rosy as she was not in attendance for personal reasons, this really started to raise our alarm bells.
This then led to more challenges of what we requested, and the whole experience became the last thing we wanted – a stressful wedding day… we got to the wedding day and I asked 2 of my friends to communicate with the owners and every time without fail it became a joke that they did not want to listen they only wanted to do anything their way and made a suggestion of what to do instead of what was being requested.
A number of other thing occurred that we ignored for the sake of not wanting to ruin our special day, however the final insult came when we were checking out of the hotel and we were overcharged by more than $500 and told this was a ‘mistake’ even though I had already checked the final bill and we were told that our guests still being in the hotel grounds at 12pm was an inconvenience to the hotel as they had other guests who wished to check in – the check in policy is 3pm!!!! The rooms were vacated on the whole by our guests at 11am as per the check out time, and the cleaning staff were busy working on the rooms getting them ready for the next guests – so I am not sure where the inconvenience was.
At more than 8 months pregnant I really did not need or appreciate the aggression shown by Doug, and his parting comment to me was – “Just go and have a nice life….” Wow this was not what we were expecting to hear from the people who had just taken thousands of dollars from us and our wedding guests. They really should not advertise being able to cater for wedding groups if this is not the case.

For information there are additional charges that are not mentioned on the website, if you are not out of your room by 11am you will be charged an extra $20 (even if this is only 1 hour more) and if you have a baby (who does not need any of the services i.e. breakfast) you will be charged $20 extra to the room rate, and there are no services (cots, highchairs etc) available at the hotel to justify this charge.

All of the write-ups are correct that the staff at the hotel are very helpful and the location and quality are good, however we should have listened to our instincts and gone for another hotel and the only reason we didn’t was it was only a couple of weeks before the wedding when the main problems occurred – we later found out that their reputation is well known in the local area and it has been suggested to us that the staff are only there because they need to be – which actually shows them in an even better light that they want to make the guests stay special.
I agree with another guests comments that the visitors from the US are their priority and if there is anything you question about their service then you are ignored and treated with disdain – therefore we will never return to this hotel and would not recommend it to anyone, thankfully it did not ruin our special day and we managed to have a lovely wedding day and ignore the factors trying to prevent this, however this was not the original idea and a great number of our guests left feeling unwelcome.

Monreal, Owner at The Hideaway Hotel Playa Samara, responded to this review, 21 January 2011
I’m glad that this guest was at least honest in saying that “the staff are very helpful, and the location and quality are good”. We worked very hard to accommodate all of the special requests that were added on the day of the wedding. It’s unfortunate that the other comments are so negative, when several of her guests thanked us for their stay, and indicated what an excellent job we had done.

Just before the reception, the bride made several changes to the seating chart, to the plans for the cocktail hour, and to the agreement as to whether they were paying for the hotel rooms or their guests were paying. Those changes were made without letting us know, so admittedly, we were taken by surprise. We attempted to meet all their changes as best as we could, on the spur of the moment.

A few final notes---the group agreement was that the checkout time was 11am because our hotel was completely sold out the next night. Their group began to checkout at 11:30am and we did not charge any of those guests for late checkout. One guest that stayed until almost 1pm in his room was charged for a late checkout. He had asked several times about a late checkout and was told we weren’t able to offer that. Regardless, their group stayed on property until 1pm using the facilities, which made it difficult to serve our arriving guests. Our website does state that additional guests are charged at $20/person, including children. We did let them know of the charge when they first contacted us about their wedding, as we tell everyone who asks about our hotel. I think anyone who has children will agree that there is a great deal of extra work in taking care of them, cleaning up after them, and serving food for them, and that is also true at a hotel.

In the final analysis, I thank the groom, and other guests for their very gracious words of appreciation for how hard we worked and the excellent job we did in accommodating last minute changes.

After reading about the reviews on Tripadvisor and information for The Hideaway we decided to give it a try. My wife is Costa Rican and we have traveled to many locations in CR. We really enjoyed our stay with Doug and Rosie and the beaches were very good; especially Playa Carillo. Samara has many nice restaurants to enjoy, however we enjoyed eating at The Hideaway as well. They keep the hotel well maintained and the staff is very helpful. They are very environmentally friendly and its setting was perfect to observe the Congo monkeys each morning near the pool. From what we saw it is the place to stay at Playa Samara. Great value!

My husband and I spent eight nights at the Hideaway in Samara and our only complaint was that we had to go home. All staff are very friendly and accomodating, The location is perfect, a nice stroll along th beach to reach the center of Samara,or a short walk to Carillo beach. The Hideaway has a hidden gem and that is the cook, the food is very good. I hope anyone going has a great time just like my husdand and I had.
P.S. the blue margaritas are geat, tell Doug and Rosa Larry and Holly say Hello

Rosy, Doug, and their outstanding staff made our trip fantastic. They will plan any adventures such as kayaking, snorkeling, zip-lining, horseback riding, and turtle watching, for you. After our mornings of enjoying Playa Samara and Playa Carrillo, we came back to the hotel for a relaxing afternoon by the pool; what a perfect vacation. Their impeccable staff are more than willing to help you perfect your Spanish, make you a delicious mango margarita, or give you advice of what to see. Loita started our mornings with a delicious breakfast and smile. Fernando took our family on a hike during his off hours, and Brian sang Sheryl Crow while serving us dinner and rescuing us from giant grasshoppers. Doug and Rosy made us feel at home in their 12-room boutique hotel. We definitely recommend this hotel and this location for any family looking for a relaxing but fun-filled vacation. Thank you Doug, Rosy, Loita, Fernando, and Brian for making our stay memorable and enjoyable.
