“100% Satisfaction Guaranteed - Better than home”
Reviewed 8 February 2009

Three friends spent 8 nights in early December 2008 at Alta Vista Condominiums. We didn’t book ahead, as our entire trip was last minute and we just showed up in Samara one day, hoping to find decent accommodations…instead we found Alta Vista condominiums. We thought we had died and gone to heaven. Don’t waste your timing going any place else. 100% Satisfaction guaranteed.

We rented the second floor Condo Begonia. The moment we walked in the door, it felt like home.

This spectacular modern brand new open concept condo offers all the comforts of home:

• 2 bedrooms (both with comfortable beds),
• 2-3 piece modern baths (the ensuite has double sinks and shower for 2),
• fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances,
• spacious living area including a comfortable couch, TV with cable, DVD player,
• private balcony with a great view of the ocean,
• plunge pool (beach towels included)
• 3 Air Conditioning units (one in each bedroom) and one in the main living area,
• in-room safe,
• wireless high speed internet,
• access to washer & dryer,
• ceiling fans,
• alarm system, and
• short walk to the beach.

We loved every aspect of the condo. We felt incredibly safe and were very comfortable. We enjoyed breakfast on the balcony and we were so delighted with the kitchen, that we rarely went out for dinner. Buy your groceries in Nicoya as they not only have a bigger selection, their prices are much more reasonable. The plunge pool is a nice refreshing break from the intense heat on the beach. We also enjoyed hanging around the pool with a book and a couple of local beers (Imperial). The condo backs onto green space, and howler monkeys would frequent the area. On the rooftop terrace, you could see them at eye level. We didn’t have a car during our stay in Samara, and if you want to just hang out and surf, a vehicle is not necessary. We walked everywhere via the beach, even at night….just make sure to roll up your pants, or hike up your skirt as the tide is in. In the morning the tide is out, and the beach is huge. Even if you have a vehicle, it will be 100% safe at the condo.

This condo exceeded our every expectation and we couldn’t have asked for more. Patrick (the owner) is a wonderful host, and his staff are very friendly.

It was hard to leave and we considered staying for another week. For the remainder of our travels in Costa Rica, no place came close to measuring up like Alta Vista Condominiums. We really missed our accommodations. This was definitely the highlite of our 3 week vacation to Costa Rica, and we can’t wait to go back. This is the only place we would stay when we go back to Samara.

Four of us spent a week in Samara over the Christmas holidays (to attend a wedding). We booked late, but were fortunately able to reserve the first-floor, 2-bedroom condominium at Alta Vista Condominiums. Before we went, the owner (Patrick) very patiently answered our many questions, sent us detailed driving directions, and even made a dinner reservation for us as we were arriving late in the day. That's service!
We were greeted warmly at the condominium by the resident superintendent and immediately felt very welcome, safe and comfortable. (He spoke no English and we spoke no Spanish, so we used a lot of sign language, but no-one seemed to mind. A little bit of Spanish practice would be good for next time, though.) The condominium itself is spectacular. It is brand new, with comfortable couches and beds, stainless steel appliances, fully-equipped kitchen, TV w/cable, DVD player, alarm system, safe, very efficient AC units, reliable shower and bathroom facilities … all the comforts of home. You're certainly not roughing it here! Other friends and family stayed at various other locations in Samara and Carillo, many of which were also nice, but they were older, more traditional, Spanish villa-type structures. We preferred the modern look, the open concept and the conveniences we found at Alta Vista.
The view from the front balcony, even on the first floor is awesome! Across an open field, you have an unobstructed view of the beach and ocean. Every morning we sat on the balcony to have breakfast or to read and enjoy the view to start the day. The view from the rooftop terrace is even better! We also made use of the small plunge pool every day. There is a nice sitting area there where we could relax and read and take a dip when the heat got to us. The condominium backs onto a forested area, and is also forested to one side. Every afternoon we could watch monkeys parading through the trees or swinging and playing right beside us. From the rooftop, you were at eye level with them.
Samara beach is beautiful and enormous! (In the morning the tide is out.) It's a short walk down the road from the condo (2 or 3 minutes), then perhaps 6 or 8 minutes more to reach the town by leisurely walking along the beach. We walked into town every day, and never tired of it. In the evening, we often drove into town to eat. The seafood is unbeatable! (Later in the day, the tide comes in and reduces the huge beach area to a much smaller strip of sand, which made walking the beach at night less enjoyable.) As the tide comes in, the waves and surf also increase in size, so surfing is more of an afternoon activity. There's a small store just up the road from the condos, so we could walk to get groceries or refreshments when we needed them. (Both the Imperial and Pilsen beers were very good!)
The condo was great. The owner and host were great. The weather was great. Our entire holiday was a lot of fun. We are planning to return as soon as we can!

  • Liked — Modern, clean, secure
  • Disliked — If you don't have a car, travel into town at night is less convenient.

Awesome view. Great security. All the comforts of home including a full size fully equipped kitchen. We couldn't have asked for more. My husband and I were here for 1 week at the end of Nov 2008 and this is the only place we would stay if we came back.

If you want a picture postcard perfect view, and to be close to the beach and town, Alta Vista is it. Located on the west end of a horse- shoe shaped cove, the building faces east with a large pasture in front allowing an unobstructed view of the entire palm lined horse- shoe shaped beach and water. Imagine yourself with a cup of coffee on the balcony watching the sunrise-- stunning. You're about a half mile from town (but it doesn't seem that far once you walk it a couple of times and you're a lot closer to town than a lot of places shown on the eastern part of the Samara map). Samara has a fine tan sand beach and abundant shells. The beach at the west end is nicer than in town. Carrillo beach is even more beautiful but there is nothing else there. Most other places we looked at had units facing a garden. Why look at a garden when you can look at the beach and water from your unit. You won't be swimming laps in the pool as it is a plunge pool to cool off in, but then again there's a large body of water not far from you. We stayed in the first floor unit which is equal to the secont floor at other places.

Patrick, the owner/ manager is gracious and helpful. Have Martin, the handyman, hook you up with a fish from the fisherman down the street. We had fish all week, it was fantastic.

If your idea of vacation is rest & relaxation with a good view and in close proximity to everything, Alta Vista is the place you want to be.

If you are driving to Samara, stop at the Maxi Bodega or the large Super Compro in Nicoya for groceries. There are only mini markets in Samara with limited selection and higher prices. We bought the sweetest pineapple we had in our 3 weeks in Costa Rica at the fruit stand across from the bus station in Nicoya.

  • Liked — Great view and all the comforts of home
  • Disliked — Many stairs -- not recommended for people that can't walk up and down stairs
