“lovely people, lovely place”
Reviewed 16 May 2013

My husband and I travelled here to attend a wedding. Most of the guests were part of the wedding group so it became a wonderful spot to enjoy the festivities.
The staff were amazing and so invested in making our stay as pleasant as possible. The rooms were clean and comfortable; the grounds well kept and the food was delicious. Every effort was made by the staff to work together in making this special and it was. Thank you so much!!!
The wedding reception was at the hotel and the work done to make it special was outstanding.
We walked to town along the beach which let us enjoy the shells, fishing boats and ambiance of the area. Several people enjoyed tours that were organized by the reception staff.
It is a little far from town but you can get a cab if you want so you don't have to feel out of town too much but the location was great for us and the pool area was a big hit on those hot days.
I would love to go back and recommend others enjoy this hotel.

Room Tip: They have a second floor so if you don't want stairs...request a lower level one.

We chose this hotel based on the many excellent reviews and very few poor reviews, so I feel that I need to provide some perspective.

The good: the property itself is very nice, room very clean and air conditioned. Staff seemed nice and there is a charming outdoor eating area for the breakfast that is included.

The bad: it's a very long walk to the town of Samara, or you need a car to do the drive. As others have mentioned, it's in a "rustic" neighborhood and there's no security for parking, so patrons may want to be aware of that. Frankly, the trip to the beach is dirty and not at all nice; you would not want to hang out on the beach in the immediate vicinity especially as a single female. As we pulled up to the hotel, there was a bonfire of trash going strong on the property next door, not really what you want to be welcomed with. There are dogs and chickens wandering everywhere, including on the property, so be prepared for dogs barking until around 3am and roosters crowing at 4am. I also stayed at another hotel in Samara (which would not be considered luxury) so I know there are nicer budget places.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind the neighborhood if at least it was close to the nice part of the beach. It's too far out, with too many animals that you don't come to Costa Rica for.

The last leg of our trip took us to Sámara on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. We had reservations at Hotel Sol Sámara so we were looking forward to being near the beach. So far, Gate1 Travel had done a great job of providing hotel recommendations. Hotel Sol Sámara would be no exception!!! Quite location, spacious and up-to-date rooms, Happy Hour every night, breakfast every morning, internet connectivity and great hospitality all made for a fantastic experience. This hotel was a little off the beaten path, but is a very charming place to hang your hat. The staff is bilingual and the hotel has all the amenities you would need. Great time had by all and the next time we are in the area, we will stay here again.

Guanacaste was the last stop on a recent trip to Costa Rica and Sol Samara served as home base for 3 nights. It is incredibly convenient to everything... short walk to the beach, short drive to the action. The breakfasts were delicious (especially the home-made fruit smoothies!).

Instead of room numbers, they had images... very quaint. Rooms were spacious, comfortable, and well appointed. Pool is tiny, but then again, that's not why you're at Playa Samara. Hit the beach a block over or head south to Playa Carillo :)

Room Tip: Get a room upstairs away from the breakfast area and the stairs. Then you can sleep in and not worry...

Sol Samara let's you live the quintessential Guanacaste live style.
Relax and chilled at just one block away of a pristine beach, Sol Samara Staff welcomes you to a nice place where you are treated like Family.

Leo and Don Larry cater to all your needs, and food at Doña Sixta's restaurant is always top notch. Rooms are spotless and quite comfortable and the hotel staff attended our every request.

We were close enough to town to go there and do some shopping, dining and partying, but also at a perfect distance to not be disturbed by the late night music of the bars in Samara Downtown.

If you go to Samara, SOL Samara is your only choice, all the other places are over rated, expensive and you will be treated like a tourist, in Sol Samara you will always be Family.

Leo and staff went out of their way to make our stay remarkable.

We were in Playa Samara for a beach wedding. Sol Samara was our home for three days, and they also prepared and hosted the pre and post ceremony dinners. Starting there, the food was excellent and abundant. The tables filled the flower-surrounded lawn, lights twinkling in the trees.

Our room was cheerful, tidy, and comfortable. Our group just about filled the hotel, and we were therefore given a handicapped-friendly room with a large bathroom, clearly well designed.

The beach is a short walk down the road. It's the south end of the long Samara beach, and it's lovely. Not many people there, a safe beach for body surfing and playing in the waves.

The hotel has a small pool, perfect for relaxing in after time at the beach.

The hotel is a few kilometers from Samara-it's probably easiest to walk on the beach to get there. The town has good restaurants, banks, a grocery store, and medical necessities.

If you decide to sample local fare, there is also a soda (a local eating establishment with "tipico" food - food common to Costa Ricans,) just up the road from the hotel.

That said, the food at the hotel is good, plentiful, and reasonably priced for a beach town.

We wouldn't hesitate to return! In fact, we're in Costa Rica for three months, and likely will finish our stay at Hotel Sol Samara.

Room Tip: There are two accessible rooms on the main floor, and various bed configurations, so be specific. Tw...

We stayed one night in this hotel while on a business trip in Samara and I agree with the previous reviewers- it is a clean and well maintained place with a friendly staff and good location about a minutes walk from the beach. The lane where the hotel is located is a bit ramschackle, with simple houses, laid back locals and stray dogs, though it feels safe enough.

The rooms are furnished in a very modern style with bright colours and light coloured wood. There are nice touches around the room like small wood sculptures and art works.
You really need to have a car to stay here as it is too far to walk to the centre of Samara and there is nothing around the hotel in the way of shops or restaurants. The breakfast was very good and we particularly enjoyed the homemade papaya and pineapple jam.

The only slight disapointment for some people might be the small swimming pool, which looks like an afterthought tucked away at the back of the building. It is more like a dipping or cooling off pool and it might not be great for families. It is strange that the pool was not built in front of the hotel rooms which face some pleasant gardens and seems the ideal location, but maybe the owners have other plans for that area.

The manager Leo was very helpful and made us feel very welcome.
