This small beachfront hotel charmed me from the moment I arrived and over the ten days we spent there we discovered more and more of it's unique characteristics. I don't know what I miss the most; the sound of waves crashing right outside our door, the fresh fruit truck laden with mangos, pineapples, watermelons and other seasonal fruits, or the mouth-watering pastries and savoury treats delivered in the mornings (my personal favourite the warm, sweet cinnamon buns dripping with icing).
The Fenix is a six room hotel close enough to Samara for shopping and dinning but far enough away to be peaceful and quiet at night. Sometimes we walked into town along the beach to eat, but often we took advantage of our kitchen to cook fish we bought fresh off the fish boats beside the hotel.
We rented bikes to do some local exploring and I would recommend this as a great way to get around, but we spent most of our time boogie-boarding in the gentle, warm waves or relaxing in the palm oasis that fronts the hotel. It was fun meeting people from America, the UK, Germany as well as some fellow Canucks during our stay.
Our room, steps from the pool was amazing, with a large bedroom and a kitchen/sitting area, bathroom and shower. The cleaning staff were friendly, efficient and patient with my horrible attempts at Spanish. The hotel owners were super helpful and answered all of our questions readily. This place felt like a home away from home and we will definitely be returning. Highly recommended.

We loved our stay at the Fenix Hotel; we were invited to arrive before normal check-in and our room was ready very quickly. We loved the room (king bed!) and the kitchen especially (wonderfully equipped). The pool was the perfect size for us. The area in front of the rooms is great with several hammacs, comfortable beach chairs, a BBQ and other amenities. The nicest thing was to be able to walk from our room to the beach and even send our young kids ahead on their own as we were collecting the toys, towels, etc. The beach is right there. there are few people on the beach which makes it special, only the fishermen. Our sons loved every minute of it. The sunsets are wonderful.
Phyllis, the owner, was really quick to answer my last minute e-mail asking for a vacancy a few weeks after. We exchanged e-mails almost instantaneously and I was set very fast which was such a relief! We were invited to stay around after check-out until we pleased.
We will definitely try to come back to the Fenix Hotel if we are lucky enough to go back to Costa Rica.

Room Tip: The kitchens are wonderful and we loved using them to cook for our family.

We find the Hotel very relaxing with a very friendly atmosphere. Guest from many parts of the World stay here. This gave us a chance to talk of other places to visit with families that live around the world. We have been told by many visitors that Hotel Fenix is a place they keep coming back to. We have returned 6 of the last 9 years. The new addition this year was Swedish, deep tissue massage on the beech under the coconut tree canopy. The Young lady doing the massage has a studio or will travel to the beech. How great is that. Hotel Fenix is a perfect place to see the beautiful Sun sets, look at the stars or just set and relax.

Room Tip: We like # 4. Kind of in the middle

Six times you and your wife have stayed at the Fénix, and your stay started as a referral from someone that stayed here.

When our guests visit many times, they become friends. We exchange stories, give hugs and look forward to the visits.

We have met your grandson, who is a very nice boy, and feel that we know other members of your family.

Thank you so much for returning, and we look forward to your next visit.

Sincerely,

Phyllis @ The Fénix

It is not often that one finds a vacation property that so completely fulfills one's holiday needs that one is willing to return to it year after year, but that describes our feelings for Hotel Fenix on the beach at Samara, Costa Rica. This was the ninth time in the last 14 years that we have spent at least a month there in January and February. It is laid back and welcoming: Phyllis and Bill Root go out of their way to be helpful and accommodating. Even more, after all these years, they have become like family, welcoming us into their lovely beach resort so we can avoid February at home in Toronto.

The beach is wonderful; as a result of the recent earthquake in the area, it has become even larger and flatter and sometimes, at low tide, you have to walk a quarter of a mile to get your bathing suit wet. And the amenities, while not luxurious, are exactly what one needs for an easy, relaxed, do-it-yourself holiday. You don't even have to go very far to get your supplies: at least one fruit and vegetable truck stops by every week; the German bakery truck also stops by frequently; Derek, the owners' grandson, comes by most mornings with his mother's fantastic baked goods—muffins, cinnamon rolls, focaccia, and whatnot; the ceviche lady also passes by most days; and best of all, the fishermen often come by with their fresh catches: it's like taking fish directly out of the sea and putting them directly into your frying pan. This year we had about 6 days worth of mahi-mahi for a very modest price. Also beer and soft drinks are readily available just five steps away from each room.

So, once again, thank you, Phyllis and Bill, we had a great vacation; you are great hosts

Your monthly visits adds up to almost a year. You have truly become friends and confidantes. We look forward to your visit, including our staff. After being here for 16 years, we have many guests that stay and become a part of our Fénix family. You have stayed here more than any other. When someone can travel anywhere in the world, and they return to our “little piece of paradise”, we are truly honored.

Many thanks,

Phyllis & Bill @ The Fenix
