“A Wonderful Lodge for a Mediocre Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2014

The wife and I decided to do a beach tour of the Tamarindo area and visited several beaches. Many of the roads are terrible and we had to cross a river between Nosara and Samara. The nicest thing about our trip though was this wonderful little lodge Las Ranas that is on the top of a hill close to Samara beach. I agree with other comments that the roadway up needs work and there isn't much of a parking lot but the lodge itself is a wonderful refuge. The staff are friendly, the breakfast is included and the rooms are well maintained. There is air-conditioning in the rooms and nice hot water / cold water showers. It has a wonderful swimming pool that is cleaned and well taken care of. Everything works...television, air-conditioning, locks, toilet facilities and we didn't have any concerns. There is security at night and you can rest in peace. As the lodge is on top of the mountain, there are geckos, iguanas and monkeys that come to visit. The birds are plentiful and it is a peaceful, serene lodge that is worth your time to stay at least one night. The only discerning comment I would make that I wonder about is that Costa Rica prides itself on the "Puda Vida (pure life) " and taking care of the environment. There are signs next to the toilets that state not to place toilet paper into the toilets because of the type of septic system and there are visible piping runs going down the hillside from the apartments. One would hope they terminate into some type of tank or finger system. The backside of the apartments still have the "construction look" at the base of the apartments and could use a little area beautification around the grade beams.

Hello Kenneth,

All of us from Lodge Las Ranas would like to thank you for taking the time to write this review. Feedback is key to our business. I would just like to address your mentioning of our septic system. As you also live in Costa Rica I am actually extremely surprised you haven't seen this pretty much everywhere you have been. In Costa Rica like all of Central America it is the norm and is common knowledge amongst locals to not allow toilet paper into the system. In most cases this is due to the pipes used(size) and in no way would suggest we do not have proper septic tank systems. At the end of that pipe you mentioned there is a septic tank. 1 of 4 on our property. We have tried to tidy up the back of the buildings as you have mentioned.

Just to be sure prospective guests are well informed, you mention we have televisions which is incorrect. We do not offer televisions in any of our rooms.

We very much appreciate you taking the time to write this review and hope to see you in the future!

And when you reach the top of this scary one lane drive you find pretty villas, an attractive outdoor reception & dining area and an inviting pool. Monkeys had arrived to make our checking in even more interesting. Our room was one of 4 in a small villa. Attractive walkways leading to the rooms with a interesting forest behind in which to watch and hear the Howler Monkeys. Rooms were very clean and nicely decorated. Only concern for us were the geckos that entered our room at times. I suppose it seems silly to complain about geckos in Costa Rica but it did cause me to sleep with the covers over my head. A nice breakfast every morning on the lovely outdoor dining area was a great way to start each day of beach touring and strolling the interesting little town of Samara. The owner & staff of Las Ranas were very friendly and helpful. This was a charming and relaxing place to stay!

Hello Pam,

On behalf of all of our staff thank you for your review! We always love hearing back from our guests. We can understand your feelings towards the geckos. They can be very hard to keep out but as most who have spent time in CR will tell you they are harmless and a very common occurrence throughout the entire country.

We hope to see you again in the future!

We arrived from Liberia airport late in the evening, everything was waiting for us. The owner, Canadian Albertan makes you feel you are home in the family. All are ten rooms, on the top of a hill in the forest. We were visited by monkeys and saw wonderful variety of birds. Samara beach is 2-3 km from the hotel, best covered by your rented SUV or a $4 cab, or if you don't mind the dust and the empty road you can walk it in 15-20 minutes. The staff is friendly and the value is great. This is an address to keep for our future vacations in Costa Rica.

Room Tip: Take advantage of the swimming pool, it is relaxing and a change from the surfing waves of the ocean...

This is so past due that I feel horrible, but I think I saved the best for last. We traveled around Costa Rica for almost three weeks and this was by far one of my favorite hotels. The family that owns LLR is incredibly nice and beyond helpful even giving us a ride to town when a taxi wasn't available. They were also very helpful with tours and dinners as well.

The property is gorgeous and well maintained. Very nice rooms. Fantastic for the price! Its just outside of town but a very quick taxi ride (about 4 dollars each way). Saw Monkeys and Toucans around the property and even while enjoying breakfast.

Hoping to stay here again real soon!!!

We stayed here the night before we flew out of Liberia - clean run from there to the airport. We booked at the last moment (through TripAdvisor.) Service was wonderful: greeted warmly upon arrival, everything explained, breakfast served quickly in the morning. The room, pool and hotel grounds were impeccable. The property is on the top of a hill to the north side of Samara with fabulous views from our room to both ends of the Samara beach, with hills and green in between. The room was lovely and comfortable, nice bathroom, large balcony facing two directions, and very private. Monkeys and plenty of birds in sight and earshot. Very quiet location (except for the animals.) Only location drawback: a distance from town. Breakfast was included and tipico (scrambled eggs, gallo pinto, toast, coffee/tea.)

The best part: I was notified by email that I'd left a garment behind - they were hoping they could still catch us in town, but we didn't get the email until we were back in the States. I offered to pay for shipping, but was told that someone was traveling "to North America" the next week, and would ship from there. I was delighted to receive it last week!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony facing the water.

Hello NSKramer,

Thank you for your wonderful review!! These reviews serve as an important tool for us to make sure our guests enjoy their time with us. At times it can get a bit loud with the birds and the monkeys in the surrounding jungle but I find it is the kind of noise a person wants to listen too.

We are happy to know you received your forgotten item. Be sure to drop by on your next time through Costa Rica.

All the best,

We stayed at Lodge Las Ranas from Jan. 18- Jan. 23, 2014 and we had a great stay. Shelley and Cody who run the place are very helpful and really nice. They suggested things for us to check out and try in the area and we were not disappointed.
The attention to detail at the hotel is great too. It's very clean and everything is top notch.
All the staff at the hotel are very kind and we always felt comfortable.
The landscaping around the place is lovely and there is lots of wildlife. The hotel is situated out of town a little ways so it is quiet and you can get away from the hustle and bustle. The view from the hotel is fantastic as well! The pacific in the distance is beautiful.
We were traveling with our 3 year old son and they were very accommodating and kind to him.
if we are ever back in this area I would definitely stay at Lodge Las Ranas again.

Room Tip: We were very happy with our room and I think all the rooms were situated well so that you felt like...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2013

We spent two nights at Lodge Las Ranas shortly before the busy Christmas season. As we were driving through town looking for the place, we were at first intimidated by the steep drive up to the lodge, but once there (and subsequently more comfortable with the driveway), we felt right at home. All the staff were super-friendly, and the room was very comfortable. Having a deck with two rocking chairs, and being able to sit in privacy while looking over the bay was special. The location affords both amazing sunrises and sunsets, as well as monkeys - audible as well as visible. We thoroughly enjoyed everything (including the pool/lounge area which is a great place to unwind). The price is a bit more than many of the other options in town, but well worth it.

Even though the lodge is not in town, it is easy to get to town and we had no problems with parking in town, making the trek back and forth more enjoyable.
