Wifi-big negative! Hotel Playa Negra owners, spend the $ & have more than just your Office as a hotspot or stop false advertising.....
Location is amazing. Breakfast was fantastic. Nights are warm & I am sure a little uncomfortable but not too bad at all.

We visited the restaurant only, and had a very poor experience. The food was only ok, but what makes the visit get a bad review is the wait staff. They were rude and arrogant and unhelpful to answer menu questions and questions about the area, which was really unusual for Costa Rica, which usually provides very kind and friendly staff. The owner was very friendly, but I can't say the same for the others. If looking for a place to eat, there are far better options within a couple of miles.

I stayed at Hotel Playa Negra for six nights - partly as a wedding guest and the rest as a mini-vaca. So I experienced this resort with many people and nearly empty. Also stayed right at the cusp of the off-season but locals had a 'long weekend'. So the weekend had considerable people traffic. If you want to experience Costa Rica, this is a good choice. Off the beaten path...(no paved road for about 4 km. The 'short cut' to Tamarindo is pretty interesting)....native cuisine in the restaurant (which is delicious. Ate around the menu and never had anything I did not like). A beautiful natural shoreline and beach is truly the signature piece of this resort. The countless surfers from around the world who are drawn here offer countless hours of free entertainment for beach sitters. And there is a sandy area just to the left that allows for less adventurous dippers like myself. The pool is a welcoming break from sand, but close enough to still view and hear the ocean. And there is a shaded side. I did not stay in a hut, but many wedding guests did and reported minimal problems. One hut did have a leaky roof, but the hotel got right on that and actually replaced the entire thatched area (which was kind of cool to witness). I shared an upstairs apartment in a house on the resort grounds with three other adults - Villa Sucre. Of the available houses, this might be the most 'rustic'...no A/C, simple but workable kitchen area, windows and screens that are not a tight fit (but repair might be forthcoming). We mostly spent early mornings and nights sleeping there. Fans kept air moving. I never lost sleep from being too hot. But late afternoon heat with no breeze could be intense. And the house had no real ocean view so the trees and such interrupted any light breeze. But it was clean, had 'maid' service every other day, and reliable wifi. If you are thinking about doing a house, the others are more 'upscale' and comfy. Take a close look at Villa Chantaco. Bride's parents and family stayed there. A/C in bedrooms, incredible kitchen area for entertaining, and a breath taking view of the ocean from a partially covered veranda. One house has a pool. But you are still on the resort grounds and can use all those facilities as well. Perfecto! If you get bored with just the beach-pool-bar circuit, the Surf Shop and locals can arrange tours etc. Some wedding guests did a canopy zip tour and beach horseback riding. All awesome experiences. Other things to consider: 1) You are visiting a country near the equator. It is hot. And you share the environment with natives - human and otherwise. Like big lizards, insects, and exotic creatures that make strange night sounds. Plan for it and embrace it. Pack a strong insect repellent. 2) You are fairly isolated. There is a small 'town' about a 10 minute walk out a narrow dirt (dusty in the dry season) road. Local shops and other eating choices worth the trip. And others a bit further that would best be done by car. 3) Sunsets are breathtaking....and when it is down, it is very dark. Pack a flashlight. 4) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. If this is not your typical climate, you cannot drink too much water. 5) You are on a resort but share the beach with everyone. And right in front of the resort is a popular spot. But I was almost always solo with a minimum of people on longer beach walks. As always, my stay was made better by the people. Renee (in Reception) was a most gracious and attentive host. The restaurant staff was easy going and always helpful. So always the 'bottom line' question: Would I stay there again? Absolutely. I would, however, consider one of the other houses with a better ocean view. But I would also not hesitate to try a hut. I already miss the food. I will definitely return to Costa Rica...and soon. Safe travels.

Room Tip: If traveling with a group, consider one of the houses on the resort grounds.

A great little hotel right on the beach in playa negra. The pool is nice and right next to the ocean. The rooms which are hut like have a great design and we slept great being a couple with two children. The surf store has a great surf instructor and the waves were beautiful. Also not to forget to mention the sunsets which were breath taking. The restaurant that is right on site has delicious food and offers many options for everyone. Can't wait to go back!

We had lunch and dinner at the Hotel Playa negra restaurant - the choice of salads were not that goody They don't use salt while preparing the patacones...
Dinner however was delicious. Try the grilled tuna with ginger sauce!
The restaurant staff is really nice, although service is super slow, we waited almost an hour for the food.
The hotel staff is not very friendly if you're not staying as a guest which I consider unacceptable.
