Upon arriving at Cala Luna, we were greeted promptly by Carlos, one of the many friendly and accommodating staff at this boutique hotel. We stayed in villa 13 (not an unlucky number for us!). It had 2 queen sized beds, 2 sinks, a large bathroom with an oversized, mosaic tub built into the floor. The room was spacious and clean, and a few short steps from the pool. The pool is bookended by a well-stocked bar and the property's restaurant. The pool area has comfortable chairs, towels, etc. and is staffed by helpful people who are readily available but never feel imposing.

The food at the resort is very good, with a fair number of choices. Breakfast is complementary and includes fresh juices, pancakes, eggs of all types, cheeses, etc. The lunch menu is generous and contains something for most tastes. We had dinner a few times in the restaurant, and found the preparation elegant and the meals delicious. Two of the owners are originally from Belgium, and their penchant for upscale cuisine followed them here.

While lounging on the property, keep an eye out for monkeys who hover in trees nearby, or one of the owner's three dogs. We especially liked Igor, a small beagle who would check out the scene now and again. We first met Igor at Cala Luna's private beach during the sunset cocktail hour.

Speaking of the beach, some reviews of this property complain that the water is rocky. While that's true, the beach itself is clean and beautiful, with plenty of space to enjoy the sand and sun. I was a little nervous we'd be only able to enjoy the pool (based on these reviews), but that's not the case at all. You can bring your towel or, if you prefer, the Cala Luna staff will set up beach chairs for you to use. If you want to swim in the ocean, you can walk a few minutes down the beach where the water is great.

The staff at the resort was helpful, and assisted us in planning some trips including a zip lining outing, a relaxing massage, and a morning of horseback riding. Be aware that while most of the staff speak English pretty well, if you go too far "off script", you may find yourself wondering if what you said is what was heard.

My only wish is that the resort included a fitness center. Other than that, it was a fantastic experience all around. I highly recommend Cala Luna and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Lucky 13 is right near the pool and the walkway to the beach.

Cala Luna is a small upscale "hotel" offering both rooms and cabins/villas. We stayed in a room with two queens, which was spacious, clean, and close to their excellent restaurant, pool, and beach. The food and service is absolutely wonderful at this hotel. It's not on the beach, but not a far walk through the hammock. Activities can be arranged from the hotel or in town, so I'm not sure it's a good idea to get a package deal from an agent (like we did). Sail fishing is very good in the area. Other than fishing and relaxing at the hotel, the town of Tamarindo doesn't offer much.

Room Tip: The rooms are far closer to the hotel's amenities than the villas, so I'd recommend a room.

Great food, private swimming pool with our room, close to the beach, not on the beach though, just a quick drive into town. At night two raccoons and a large cat would team up and try to slid our screen door open looking for food so we tossed them large slices of pizza to hold them off. Hey, this place was absolutely great.

Our family visited Costa Rica and stayed in a villa at Cala Luna the week of November 22, 2013. Our experience was far beyond our expectations. The employees were very friendly and helpful. The villa was well appointed, clean, & comfortable. It was very nice to have room to spread out. The pools were super clean and beautiful. The food was excellent, every time. The beach was beautiful and easy to access. The hotel arranged for airport shuttle service. Our driver Hugo Rentana was right on time, picked us up in a clean, comfortable vehicle. He and his family helped out with taxis, surf lessons, tours, etc. Everyone associated with the hotel did a great job and was a pleasure to do business with. I would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I were married at Cala Luna on November 16th and we cannot say enough good things about this hotel. The staff goes above and beyond for all of their guests and knew our entire group (more than 30 people total) by first name. They were so accommodating and even helped us rearrange rooms twice to accommodate my less-mobile grandparents. We loved this hotel so much that when we left for our honeymoon to the Westin in Playa Conchal, we checked out early and headed straight back to Cala Luna. Other hotels just can't compare.

The grounds are meticulously kept and all of the experiences offered with your stay are incredible. We loved the fresh breakfast in the morning and the sunset cocktails at night and enjoyed the morning yoga class more than once. We were upgraded to a two-bedroom villa when we arrived which was incredible! When we came back after our one-night stay at the Westin, we were given a standard room that felt like a private bungalow in the middle of the jungle. No matter what type of accommodation you have here, it will be fantastic.

The staff is really what makes this place special. We really loved getting to know Enrique and Danny and felt sad to be leaving them. Anna at the concierge and Alexandria the wedding planner were also amazing and helped our entire group get coordinated for activities and for the wedding. Alexandria even held onto my bouquet after the wedding just in case I wanted it back! Everyone, from Charlie and Mario in the restaurant to Laura and William at the front desk and Montessarat (sorry if I spelled that incorrectly) in the spa were just amazing. They really made our trip! We even met the owner who recommended a great Italian restaurant in town (That's Amore), and even called the owner Pete to tell him we were coming.

The hotel is in a great position as well. It is close enough to Tamarindo to either walk or take a $5 cab ride, but not right in the middle of it. The beach at the hotel isn't very swimmable but a short walk will get you to some great swimming holes. We found that the rocky beach at the hotel made for some fun snorkeling, though!

I could go on and on about this amazing hotel and our incredible experience there. We booked our honeymoon at the Westin thinking it would be nice to get away for a few days to unwind after the wedding and enjoy our last moments of our trip, but we immediately realized that while that hotel is beautiful, we missed our friends at Cala Luna. We plan to return as soon as we can!

Room Tip: The Wi-Fi is strongest in the rooms and villas closest to the lobby and restaurant. It doesn't a...

Our family experienced one of a kind wedding at the Cala Luna resort for our daughter Amy and her fiance' Fernando.

We arrived on October 27, 2013 and stayed until November 8. This gave us plenty of time to enjoy all they could offer. The property is well maintained and the food in the restaurant is prepared and served beyond our expectations. The villas are all nestled in the beautiful tropical setting and serve your needs quite well. The wedding was on the beach and the wedding coordinator Alexandria did a superb job in carrying though our requests for the wedding and reception. In the reception area in the lobby both Rebekah and Laura served us well with our request for services. Priscilla has a woundeful staff that handled our meals in the dining area. The open air setting right next to nature is never to be forgotten. Then a big thanks to Cristan and Enriquel for their great service at the wedding reception and pool side service. These are just a few of the many staff that makes our stay personal, not to mention them calling you by name as they greet you each day.

Tamarindo downtown is located about 1 mile away and the local cabs will just charge $5.00 per load each way. Downtown has a lot of good eating places and Cala Luna can give you some good recommendations. We would definitely go back in the future for a vacation.

Thanks Cala Luna for the great memorable time with you all.

Sincerely,

Debbie & Wayne

My husband, adult children and I went to Costa Rica for my daughter wedding. When we arrived at the Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas. you walk into an open air customer service desk. and are greeted by wonderful customer service people. I knew that if the villas looked anything like this that it is going to be beautiful. The people that work there speak English (at least a little) and Spanish. We stayed in a villa with two bedrooms, 2 bathrooms full kitchen, outdoor sitting area and private pool. You have a private safe in the room. I put money, cell phones, passports, jewelry. The restaurant has wonderful food and the servers are very friendly. Breakfast is included. There is a beautiful swimming pool that is by an outdoor bar and sitting area. You can order food from the bar. All around you is a beautifully lighted walkways. The resort has natural plants and trees all over the resort. You can see and hear the Holler Monkeys and exotic birds. They have a sand walkway to the ocean. The walk to the ocean is 5-10 minutes away. My daughters, mother in law and I all had a massage it was great. The wedding planer met with my daughter and son in law the first day we arrived and each day before the wedding to make sure everything is exactly what they dreamed of. As far as the wedding goes the planner made sure that the attorney who officiated they wedding had everything he needed to make sure all the documents were done. Then there was the flowers, they were beautiful and they lined the walk way to the ocean. The wedding was on the beach at low tide. The reception was in a beautiful decorated cabana. We had a fantastic 7 course meal. The wedding planner and the head chief made sure that the food was perfect. There were several servers and they worked as a well trained team. The photographer took picture at the wedding and at the reception. He also asked my daughter and son in law if there were any special photo's they wanted. The work and planning that went into the wedding made sure that everything flowed effortlessly. You can drink the water because the resort has special water purification system. The resort grows its own fruit and veges. The staff here are amazingly friendly and attentive to all your needs and wants even things you may not have thought of.You can set upt side trips right there. The owners of the resort lives right on the property. You are greeted by a beagle named Igor and his two sisters. They are great good will ambassidors. Then there was the weather, warm with showers in the morning or evening. The showers do not last long and the rain is warm so it will not cancel any plans. You can walk about 2 miles to the grocery store and gift shops. The Cala Luna Boutique is so nice we did not want to leave and can't wait to go back.
