I stayed at Pura Vida House as part of a tennis group for the first week of April. Its location then was near a very small town 27 de Abril on a small compound. We ate traditional Costa Rican dishes when we ate there, but we also visited some very nice restaurants in towns nearby and enjoyed food at the beach.
The kindness and enthusiasm of the hosts made this trip very special. I felt I got to know Jorge and Stephanie and Barb very well and through them a little bit of Costa Rica.
I also enjoyed the tennis lessons with Jorge. Next year things should be much more convenient, as Jorge and Stephanie are constructing a new place very close (biking distance) to the beach and the tennis courts and the beach resorts. And they will be able to concentrate perhaps on other things than ferrying guests at least to the nearby locations. I hope to have another opportunity to visit them in that new location.
This was such a fantastic trip! Beyond all expectations! So much care and attention given by our hosts Stephanie, Jorge, and Pat. Very laid back. So many options for activities we couldn't do them all!!
Everything about this trip was phenomenal and spectacular. Jorge and Steph are wonderful hosts, and they provide a warm and personal welcome to their guests. The food is delicious and plentiful. The choice of activities and sites to visit is tremendous. And Costa Rica deserves its reputation as a prime winter/spring vacation destination. Pura vida!!!
Pura Vida House is a an all-inclusive inn in Guanacaste, the north Pacific coastal region of Costa Rica. The international airport in Liberia is about an hour away, depending on traffic.
The modern hacienda-style setting includes two houses with seven en-suite bedrooms that can accommodate up to 12 guests. Guests have access to all common areas including a large inside sitting area (where you’ll find a telephone with free calling to the U.S. and Canada), a wide veranda lined with rocking chairs, a very popular table soccer game, a pool and wonderful hammocks
Pura Vida House offers a true immersive experience. The inn is located in the small community of Paso Hondo, surrounded by mountains, tropical vegetation, small farms and friendly neighbors. You suddenly feel a part of the community with everybody smiling and waving. Waking to the sound of roosters crowing in Costa Rica gives relaxation a new meaning.
Hosts Stephanie and Jorge can arrange from a wide variety of excursions including zip-lining, ATV riding, a trip to the rainforest and much more. (Be sure to ask about Chris the “nature savant” tour guide. He’s amazing!) And then there are always the incredible nearby beaches. There are beaches for surfing, snorkeling, getting massages and - my favorite - isolated in Costa Rican jungle.
Pura Vida also offers golf and tennis vacations. Host Jorge played on Costa Rica’s Davis Cup team and taught in the U.S. Tennis is played at nearby private courts and golf is at the spectacular Hacienda Pinilla.
Whether you’re an experienced birder or just thrilled at the thought of spotting something exotic and colorful, you won’t be disappointed. Parakeets gather in the trees around the inn at sunrise and sunset. Take a nature walk with Stephanie or an estuary boat trip through a national park with a professional guide to see a variety of exotic birds and animals. Including howler monkeys!
Cost of your stay includes your accommodations, use of all common areas (including amazing hammocks and rocking chairs) and breakfast and dinner daily. Pastora, the inn’s cook/housekeeper, fills the table with wonderful local cuisine. Beans-and-rice, fried plantains, fresh vegetables, chicken, steak and lots of fresh fruit. (And you can pack light, she’ll even do a load of laundry for you!)
The thing that makes Pura Vida House really stand out is the atmosphere. Stephanie and Jorge, and Steph’s mom Barb, truly made us feel like part of a family. All transportation was provided, every detail arranged. Pastora always had plenty food available at mealtime, and there was always something extra in the fridge - like home, but better.
If you’re looking for a relaxing Costa Rican vacation in an authentic setting, you can’t get any better than Pura Vida House.
We spent a wonderful six days at this beautiful place in rural Guanacaste, but just 30 minutes from the Pacific Ocean. Stephanie, Jorge, and Barb picked us up at the airport, took us to the beach, arranged for snuba diving, pottery making, hiking, a rodeo, estuary tour, visit to a beach club, bird watching, and local culture. The location in a small interior village allowed us to see what the real Costa Rica was like. We enjoyed the pool every day and company of the other guests, who were friends. They took us to rent a car and helped us make travel arrangements so that we could travel around the country for another week. Truly a great vacation!
This was one of the best vacations I've ever had. It was very relaxing and the people in Costa Rica couldn't have been nicer! The beaches are absolutely beautiful and watching all the diverse wildlife is great fun. This is definitely is the way to see a new country and absorb the culture.
Pura Vida House provides a perfect Costa Rica vacation setting. Food is excellent and the setting with monkeys , birds and chickens makes you feel the atmosphere immediately. The hosts will take you anywhere for hiking, horse back riding, tennis, beach surfing sailboating or nature trips.
