“Great spot and lovely owner (+dogs)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2013

We stayed in Joey's place during our trip through Costa Rica. First thing we were greeted with was a very chilled out Joey who has a 2 lovely dogs. He has a lovely set up with a pool, communal area for cooking and chilling out and even a fridge with chilled glassess. We stayed in the second floor honey moon suite which is a sweet set up. In every room there's amenities for cooking and a fridge and TV.
The place is up the top of the hill at the back of the town which means a bit of a walk home at night but you have great views of the area. Joey had plenty of recommendations for where to eat and what to do.
During our stay we did have a bit of bad luck and had our phones and money taken and Joey came down to the police station with us and spoke to the police for us as our spanish is poor and they don't speak english.....he waited around the police station with us till it got sorted and then dropped us back to get out bus out of Tamarindo. Despite the sour taste of being robbed we still have great memories of our stay in Tamarindo and I would definitely recommend staying with Joey in Casa Bambora

Thank you very much for your review. I'm glad other than that unfortunate incidence you had an enjoyable time here in Tamarindo.
Although Tamarindo is a very safe town, petty thievery is a bit of a problem all over Costa Rica and if you don't keep an eye on your belongings they may disappear. I always warn my guests to keep an eye on there valuables no matter where they are. Unfortunately I was at the vet with my sick dog and unable to be here at checkin and didn't go over the rules with you. So I do feel a bit responsible and I apologize for that.
I am just thankful that you guys had travel insurance and were covered for your loss. I was more than happy to help out with filing the police report and am hopeful that they will catch the thieve.
In over ten years in this business I have had only one other guest lose a phone at a late night club and other than that no other incidences so I hope your not discouraged from coming back for another visit
I felt bad that your insurance policy had a $100 deductible and not charging you for your last night was the least I could do.

Joey

We stayed at Casa Bambora April of 2013. Joey emailed us back the same day we decided to stay there. We stayed in the second floor in a clean room with full kitchen, attached bathroom/shower, and small terrace. short 5-10 minute walk to town. We enjoyed walking down to the beach to watch the sunset and have dinner, and it was safe walking back even after dark. It was a central location so we drove to playa avellana and playa grande on different days. The pool at Casa Bambora is great to relax after a whole afternoon at the beach, and the bar/kitchen downstairs is a great idea if you feel like grilling (we didn't use it, except when we needed a bottle opener for our wine, although Joey was more than happy to show it to us, he has done great work there) Joey is great, friendly, responsive, and easy going, He showed us the room, gave us the keys, showed us where he lived in case we had questions/concerns, and gave us our first great recommendation on where to have dinner the night we arrived. Then, after introducing us to Pinto, Coby, and Toro, he left us alone as if we owned the place. Overall a great experience, we know where to stay if we come back, I hope Pinto is doing better.

Room Tip: No room service, if you like to sleep in a freshly made bed every morning, this is not the place for...

My fiance and I chose Casa Bambora to spend our wedding/honeymoon at, and we couldn't have chosen better! Joey is good people -- HONEST, friendly, tranquilo to the max, accommodating and helpful. He's the man with all the connections! If you want to do something, mention it to Joey and he'll set it up - surfing, ziplining, touring, etc.! We stayed in the 1st Floor studio and loved it. There was some measure of privacy to it, as the other suites have neighbors, we had our own backyard area with hammock and table. The top of the hill in Tamarindo is the place to be to get away from the rowdy street life of town. The sunsets from the rooftop deck are spectacular and you get the most amazing view of the area. Truly a gem. Absolutely no issues with electricity, water or toilets -- can't say the same for others we ran into staying at other locations. We really enjoyed our stay here and are coming back this winter! Can't wait to see everyone again! Pura Vida!

Room Tip: 1st Floor studio was private.

My girlfriend and I recently got back from a 7-day stay at Casa Bambora and we were blown away. We stayed in room 2B (the biggest of all the rooms) and loved it from the moment we stepped through the door. As we walked in for the first time, we were greeted with a clean and spacious room that had a full kitchen, living room, a king bed, and an attached bathroom with shower. The room also had large windows, with spectacular views of the ocean and dry forest, and doors that lead out to our own private balcony. All of that alone was easily worth the price we paid. The bonuses were 1) the roof deck: perfect for tanning/watching the sunset, 2) the grill and bar: great for when you want to relax with others and BBQ food, 3) the pool and waterfall: clean and refreshing on those hot days, 4) the three dogs: very sweet and adorable and 5) the hospitality of Joey and Teresa: very helpful and fun people to hang out with!

Casa Bambora is a perfect place for those travelers who want something different than a conventional and overpriced hotel. It is not for those individuals who don’t want to clean up after themselves and want their bed made every morning or individuals that don’t want to walk 5 minutes to get to town (and back up a hill). When you arrive, Joey basically shows you the room, gives you the keys, and asks you if you have any questions or concerns and then it is completely yours for the duration of your stay. We loved that! It made it seem like our own little home where we could be as messy or as clean as we wanted.

Things to know:

--5 minute walk from Casa Bambora to the beach OR $4 for a cab ride there/back (just say “Casa Bambora”)
--Nature trail - steep and rocky (saves on walking time but be careful!)
--Always have a small flashlight along at night - the walk home can be very dark
--American dollars are accepted most everywhere in Tamarindo (we never had a problem)
FYI – 1 dollar = 500 colones
--Expensive tourist town - be prepared to pay higher prices on food, activities, and souvenirs (we went to the ATM at least 2 times to get more cash)
--Book excursions when you arrive - there are probably 10-20 different tour companies in Tamarindo offering a variety of tours, many of which are the same. Booking tours when we arrived allowed us to shop around and price compare to get the best bang for the buck (we liked what Xplore Costa Rica had to offer)

Ways to save:

--Buy food (and drinks) at a local supermarket (3 minute walk to one from Casa Bambora) to cook on the grill or the stove.
--Plan excursions with others. The more people on tours, the less you will pay.

Excursions recommendations:

--Xplore tours - Vandara Adventure Combo Tour (best adrenaline rush of our trip): horseback riding, high-flying zip-line, crazy-intense waterslide, mud bud, and hot springs, topped off with a delicious organic meal (included in pricing) and tasty alcoholic drinks (not included in cost)

--Xplore tours - Palo Verde Crocodile Safari (best for wildlife sightseeing): boat ride filled with wildlife such as monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas and lizards, and tropical birds. This trip included the BEST local meal we had - meal cost is included in this trip and it is pretty much all you can eat.

--Sail Antares - Sailing Tour: 6-hour sail boat ride on the Pacific Ocean with an open bar, fun music, amazing food, and friendly staff. You can relax, swim, and even snorkel. The tour ends with an unbelievable Costa Rican sunset – best trip to finish your visit with.

I usually don’t write reviews on anything, but I felt Joey and his place deserved the praise. Casa Bambora truly was a remarkable place to stay, and I would recommend it to anyone planning on visiting Tamarindo. You will not be let down with the value you will receive. I can promise we will be back next time we visit!

Pura Vida!

Came here in the beginning of January for a two week get away with my deployed fiance and couldnt of been happier! We really enjoyed our stay here, very quiet and relaxing just what we were looking for. Joey was awesome and he definately was helpful since this was our very first time in Costa Rica, he took us in like family! Close to town but far enough from all the hustle and bustle, we walked up and down the hill for our entire stay... finally got used to it at the end of our trip :) My fiance and I got engaged in Tamarindo while on our stay so we will never forget Casa Bambora, Joey, Toro, Coby or Pinto! Hope all is well and Thanks again for everything!

We stayed in Suite 3 from March 27-31. We really enjoyed our stay here in Tamarindo. Tamarindo is an awesome spot and truly Pura Vida. First off, Joey is a great guy and I cannot say enough good about him. He was pleasant, easy to talk too, and helpful with giving us directions and info about restaurants. Joey had an awesome play list on his IPOD that he would have playing for us while we hung out at the pool! Thanks Joey! The pool was fantastic and we loved hanging out here reading. The price was good and i think it was worth it. The place was clean, although we did have some ants in our suite. I think this is a costa rica problem though and Joey did spray. We kept our suitcases zipped and all food in the fridge. Most of the ants (those really tiny almost invisible ones) were on the wall by the AC unit, and on the counters/table. (For this reason, i have rated the cleanliness as a 4). There isn't daily cleaning in the rooms, which we were happy about but Joey told us if we needed clean linens or towels to let him know. He also has a washer and dryer that you can use for free. The bed was comfy and we slept great here. We enjoyed having morning coffee (which Joey supplied to us) on the patio. The view is all worth it!! The location...it is about a 5 minute walk into town and 10 to the beach. Joey showed us the trail, which is steep and a little rough, but it is only 50-60 yards. You need a flashlight at night. We didn't mind the walk...we needed it, and the location of Casa Bambora made it worth it because the view was spectacular. I was pleasantly surprised with how close the beach was and how easy it was to get there...I expected it to be longer. The distance didn't bother us. If it is a problem, the taxi is only 3.00. We felt very safe here and had no problem with walking late at night back to Joey's. Ohhhh, and the dogs...amazing! They were really friendly and were on guard when Joey was out. Joey, thank you for giving us a memorable time at Casa Bambora. We hope to see you again sometime. Take care.

Room Tip: Suite 3 has the best views and is completely private as it the only suite on that floor.
