I have taken surfing lessons in various locations before, but have always had the same issue with instructors: they were either more interested in surfing themselves rather than helping you or they threw you into waves way too big, not realizing that as someone who didn't grow up near an ocean and without 20-30 years of surfing experience, you may need more help, prefer to progress slowly and step-by-step and may be scared of bigger waves at times.
It was with this background that I booked lessons with Blue Trailz, but I was determined to improve my surfing, and was assigned Kurt as an instructor. It was important to me to have the same instructor for an extended period of time rather than a different one every day. I had booked a handful of lessons upfront, but booked additional ones while there. Kurt is undoubtedly the best instructor I've ever surfed with. Realizing on the first day that I've had troubles with focusing and overcoming a certain fear of big waves, he brought me to different spots to improve my surfing skills one by one. By the fourth day, I had improved more than I've had in three or four trips before and was able to surf big and long lefts and rights. I was extremely happy with the instruction I received and the improvement of my skills and it is definitely thanks to Kurt. He listens attentively, takes you seriously, doesn't make you do things that you are still too afraid to do and actually teaches, something few instructors do. He is passionate about surfing, knows Tamarindo and its different surfspots very well and will always find the spot that is best for you on any given day and any given circumstances. He is very friendly and fun.
If you want, he also offers the option to have his brother-in-law make pictures and videos (with your own camera) while out in the water, at a small cost of 5$/hour, an offer of which I made use - the guy is very good and the video and picture footage is extremely helpful to see where you still make mistakes and have room for improvement.
Koen, the owner of the shop and school, is a very friendly and helpful person too and both him and Kurt are very flexible when it comes to scheduling lessons.
I can absolutely recommend this school and would always return to it if I were to come back to Tamarindo at some point.
