“A special stay”

Spent four days at Villa Allegre in Feb, 2014. Barry and Susie are great hosts. We stay in B&B's often and this Inn rates high on our list. The Japan suite was spacious and unique. The pool was a perfect way to start and end the day. Breakfast were different and terrific each day. Sunsets at the entrance to the beach were special each night. A short walk down the beach to great boogie boarding . Barry had great recommendations on restaurants each night. Can't say enough good things about this special Inn

Very friendly and accommodating owners . Room spacious .Very Quiet except for the birds chirping in A.M . Close to a rocky beach. Breakfast was good .Distance to town is not recommended because no sidewalks. The owner was willing to drive you to town .

A group of my friends (24 people) rented the entire Villa Alegre and it was an AMAZING experience. The house staff were some of the nicest people we met in Costa Rica. Suzye and Barry are very knowledgeable about the area and Costa Rica in general. They provided maps, directions, and catered to our needs as best they could. If I ever go to Tamarindo again, I will definitely be looking this place up.

Our group stayed at Villa Alegre for 5 nights and it was an incredible experience. We were greeted by Barry, one of the nicest hosts I have ever met. Each morning started with an excellent breakfast. Juevos rancheros, smoothies, fresh fruits and Blackberry butter that was to die for. And that was just one morning! The pool area has plenty of room to lounge or to play games. A shuffleboard court is poolside. Just a 20 second walk and you're on a beach overlooking a gorgeous sunset. Barry and Suzy welcomed us with open arms and we will never forget this trip! Thanks!

Room Tip: Paying a little extra for the Villa is worth it!

We booked for 3 nights having read the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor but were sadly very disappointed. We felt Villa Alegre was very over priced for what it offered and that the general standard was not as good as other places we stayed on our trip for nearly half the price.

The house is pretty tired and outdated (it has a 1970's feel to it) and the rooms are cluttered and over bearing with all the nik naks and family photos, even in the bathroom. The curtains were just useless strips of white material that didn't even cover the windows so the room was light from about 5.30am.

Breakfast is served at 8.30am and all guests eat together with Barry and Suzye. The menu changes a little each day but it seems to be that you get what you are given as opposed to there being any choice. Barry and Suzye are very welcoming and clearly want their guests to have a good experience, it just depends what experience those guests want as we found it quite imposing and claustrophobic.

Wifi is available but not in the bedrooms. The beach is a 30 second walk away down the garden and while in parts it is quite sandy, you would need to go further round the bay to be able to go in the sea as its very rocky. The walk into town takes about 15 minutes and is just one straight road or a taxi is very cheap ($4). Despite being located out of the town it wasn't that quiet early in the morning.

This is at best an average B&B charging double what it should be especially given that your stay is on your hosts terms even down to what you eat and when you eat it.

We had a wonderful stay at Villa Alegre for a week. The owners, Barry and Suzye, are an amazing couple with a wealth of knowledge an life experiences which made our stay that much more enjoyable and fun with great conversation. The breakfasts were beautiful and tasty, the pool and grounds were amazing, the whole vibe of the place makes you feel relaxed. We will definitely return!

Room Tip: we stayed in Japan and it was great. Spacious and comfortable!

We arrived late in Tamarindo, having rented a car and surviving a harrowing drive from the capital. We were tired, dusty, hungry, and - frankly -not in the best of moods. Withing a few minutes Barry had changed all that, his warm and friendly nature soothing our nerves like a gentle tropical breeze. The Villa Alegre is just that- a "happy house" and its hosts, Barry and Suzye, are one of a kind. My husband, an accomplished Las Vegas chef, would tell you that the breakfasts were delicious, unique and truly gourmet.. served each morning along with a little ( or alot) of conversation-- whatever one preferred... and that really was on of the best parts of the VA.. there was plenty to do, or nothing.. depending on your mood. The hosts provided all sorts of good recommendations for dining tours etc-- if thats what you preferred, or, left you alone to finish the Great American Novel in a hammock by the infinity pool
We stayed in the USA room, which was in the main house, on the smaller side compared to the villas but with a walled patio great for private sunning. The bed was quite comfortable, the room was clean and the AC and fan worked fine. Toiletries were provided, including small details missing from other 5 star resorts.
The beach was only steps away and secluded, the sunsets beautiful from the benches on the bluff. The center of town was a short walk--close enough to shop and dine, but far away enough to avoid the partyers , if you wanted too.
We had family staying at the nearby Cala Luna, in a villa with its own pool, and although spacious, I much preferred the feel of the Villa Alegre, with its wonderful hosts Barry and Suzye, the kind and hardworking staff ( Frances et al ) and last but NOT least, Manchita, the Villa's dog.:-)
If you want a relaxing and warm place to stay, with hosts that will pamper and please, visit the Villa Alegre. We are already planning our next trip..

Room Tip: All rooms are great but the Russia, Japan and California rooms probably offer a bit more privacy
