“Just wonderful!!!!!”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

My boyfriend and I traveled to Costa Rica ,sort of, spur of the moment. We are in our mid 20's and semi-recent university grads. We didn't have any set plans; we kind of planned things day by day. Thus, we missed out on cheap flights from San Jose to Liberia or Tamarindo. After dropping $700 on a 4-day rental 4x4 SUV (i didn't know what the terrain would be like getting here),soooo I wasn't sure if dropping $175 a night for a hotel would be best for us. So i read the reviews of hotels in Tamarindo. This one stood out among everyone else (in it's price range).

It is about a 1/2 mile away from the "downtown" Tamarindo area. This actually gives it an exclusive feeling. I think there are only 34 rooms, so it isn't overcrowded at all. We were greeted by friendly people at the front desk. Also, there are a few feral kitties that have made this hotel their home. They are very chill cats and hang out on the seats near the reception desk. We did watch one kitty hunt down a lizard. We also saw howler monkeys in the trees when we first got there. There are a couple babies too.

The rooms are lovely. We had a regular room on the bottom floor, #23. It was nice to have a normal shower. The bathroom was very big, the beds were comfortable, and there was a seating area in front of the bed.

There is a private access gate to the beach. This was one of the more convenient things about this place. You didn't have to walk far to get to a beach. PRO TIP- you can rent surfboards for a certain price BUT you can borrow the boogie boards for FREE. They are good quality boards, not some Styrofoam garbage. BUT, if you lose or break the boards, you will be charged $100 per.

The breakfast was great. It is a breakfast buffet, but there is an option to order specific items (for charge, of course). The quality of the breakfast was very good. They have fruit (pineapple, cantaloupe, papaya, etc), Cheese/meats, Hot food (eggs, sausage, etc), pastries/breads, about 8 different jam/jelly options, several juices, and cereal.
Watch out for the blue birds... They like eggs and sausage. :P

To the person who gave 4/5 stars because of disappointing 'to-go' breakfast....
1. It isn't their fault you chose to have a tour at 7am.
2. I am surprised they even gave you a boxed breakfast. If fresh food is not kept at specific temperatures, you are at risk for getting sick. They could be held liable. Every togo breakfast I have had from hotels consisted of a packaged granola bar/muffin, banana/apple, and the like.

If you are a parent that uses the television to babysit your children, this is NOT the place for your family. There aren't televisions in the rooms, but the internet is pretty good. We were able to stream the shows we wanted to watch while winding down for the day.

This hotel is certainly worth the price; the atmosphere is very resort-like.

This was the second stop (after spending 3 days in Arenal), we (a family of four - including 2 teenager sons) were greeted warmly by the staff. After we were given some vouchers for free drinks, we went to the bar which was not clean and waited for about 15 minutes. Finally a unfriendly and rude bartender came out and another 10 minutes later he made us some drinks. No smile. No eye contact. Later on we ordered some more drinks from there which were not so great yet the staff overcharged on our bill. So we decided to get some bottles from a local grocery which saved us $$$$.

On the postive note, the location was perfect, not too crowded and a 10 min walk to downtown. Rosa who worked at the coinceige and the manager (I think his name started with V) were very friendly and warm. We admired them.
Our rooms 22 and 23 were very well cleaned and easily accessible. No TVs in our rooms which was fine, instead we read books and checked emails via laptops. WiFi was great.

Overall, besides the bar incident, we enjoyed the entire stay.

We love this hotel. It was an incredible experience. Beautiful quiet rooms that if you can imagine are more beautiful than the pictures, kind helpful staff, a simple but delicious breakfast. You can have a private table on the beach for dinner and walk the peaceful sand beach all the way to the town of Tamarindo. Its perfect AND it has monkeys! Lots of howler monkeys come through and hang out in the trees. You can watch them all day. While it may be a bit of the splurge to the budget it is well worth it if you are looking for a romantic getaway with your love. We hope to be back one day.

I cannot fault this hotel at all except for the breakfast staff which we found to be unfriendly and unco-operative. The hotel is situated on the Pacific Ocean in a most magnificent setting. All the other staff were exceptionally friendly and bent over backwards to help us - except for breakfast. We had a wonderfull room overlooking the ocean. had to climb stairs to get there but that was no problem. The swimming pool was fantastic as was the food. One had the facility to eat on the beach at night. If one wants a relaxing holiday, that is where one should go. The town was 10 mins. away ifone went on the beach.
We were going on tour both days starting early in the morning (breakfast only starts at 7 a.m.) which is late. the first day we managed to have a continental breakfast, the next we were leaving well before 7 and asked for a boxed breakfast. We were disgusted to see that all they managed to put together was 2 slices of white bread with a slice of cheese with a bit of fruit. Certainly what we paid good money for. The management needs to attend to that. That is why I am giving this hotel 4 instead of 5 stars.

Room Tip: Try and choose a room overlooking the sea. To wake up to that view is just magic.

Room 71 is the best room ever!! It is considered a beachfront garden room (cheaper then the beachfront suite and bungalow). It has it's own walk out to the beach and restaurant, which they lock after sunset. (I noticed that the beachfront bungalow did not have this access- not sure about the suite). We loved everything about this hotel. The breakfast was fabulous ( they have the best homemade bread), Rosa the pool coordinator was excellent (renting and setting up spa appointments were super easy- plus boogie boards are free), the staff is super friendly and helpful with directions and recommendations (they have maps of the town both Tamarindo and Langosta), they have free coffee throughout the whole day, it is a great location if you want to skip to Langosta to surf or walk to town or to Playa Grande (5 min walk vs $6 cab - we walked at night on the roads and had no problem- locals did suggest not walking on the beach at night back to our hotel).

I suggest going to Playa grande because you will have the whole beach to yourself (high tide take the water taxi $1 per person - low tide just tread across) Also the guys selling the coconuts on the beach are yummy.

We ate at Enjoy (best bacon burgers- they cook spices and onions into the patty), Patagonia (the tenderloin, ribs and sangria are amazing), Noguis (best fish tacos)

Room Tip: Room 71 and Tico Take Out Delivers to the hotel

I have been to this hotel twice, once in May of 2011 and then again in May of 2014. The rooms are lovely and always clean. The outdoor restaurant food and service are wonderful. There are just the right amount of guests where there are people to meet but not crowded. The pool is beautiful and the beach is right outside the gate. The staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The only limitation I can think of is that all the rooms hold a maximum of 3 people. There were always lots of children around so I know families love it, I'm just not sure what kind of rooms they get. There are no exercise or meeting facilities to speak of so it really does stay cozy with only small groups and families.

My family and I recently traveled to Tamarindo Costa Rica in May, 2014. We were part of a large wedding group that occupied a good portion of the small hotel. I am fairly confident that anyone at the hotel, that was not with our group, disliked the fact we were there. Lots of families with small kids, mixed with a handful of adults that wanted to party.

Side note: May is probably not the best time of year to visit this region. It was hot, very humid, and the insects were out in full force. Almost everyone in our group got chewed up by insects. It was a problem. I've heard winter time is a lot better.

The location of the hotel is great for Tamarindo. This was my first time to Costa Rica, so I do not know how Tamarindo stacks up compared to other areas of the country. Yet, the hotel was at the end of the beach. This made the beach area a bit more quiet than the more populated areas. The hotel had surfboards and bodyboards that we could grab and use whenever we wanted.

The grounds of the hotel are well kept. That crew at the hotel does a nice job on the landscaping.

There are no elevators. If you are a parent with a stroller, disabled person, or someone with a lot of luggage, you are out of luck.

We had a bungalow, that was pretty cool aesthetically. It's a free-standing building that is setup like a large studio. The interior of the room was nice enough. The bungalow was air conditioned. Unfortunately, our air conditioner could not keep up with the heat and did not do a great job cooling the room down. The lack of TVs on property was ok with me for this trip. The bathroom was ok. There is a large bathtub with a shower head. Then there is an outdoor private shower that had potential. The water did not drain well in the outdoor shower, and there were a LOT of insects. This combination sort of took away from the magic of the outdoor shower. The bungalow was split level. The look is cool, but it was a bit precarious for toddlers.

The pool area is nice. The kids loved the area and had fun. The only downfall is that the pool is finished in the most abrasive concrete I've ever experienced. You definitely will not slip, but just about everyone with us got scraped and scratched at some point. Overall, not a big deal though.

One peeve I did have with the pool area is the lack of wait staff. The restaurant and bar were typically well staffed. Yet, none of them made laps around the pool to take orders, or to collect used plates and glasses. I think the hotel is missing the mark here. It's a huge opportunity for them to generate more revenue. It would also create a better experience for guests, and help to keep the pool area clean.

Another oddity is that there is literally one area with trash cans. While I can appreciate their effort to recycle, having to walk 100 yards to throw something away (ex. diaper) got annoying. Maybe they should consider putting trash by the beach entrance as well. People tend to pick up after themselves more when it's convenient.

The restaurant and bar are hit and miss. Oddly, the primary cuisine is Italian. I think I expected some type of latin influence. Some dishes were great, others, not so much. The service was also hit and miss. There were times when we were well taken care of, and others when we waited 20 minutes for a drink order, and an hour for food. This doesn't always work well with kids. Oddly, the level of service was not determined by how crowded the restaurant was. The restaurant was never crowded.

The concierge and desk staff at the hotel did everything they could to accommodate us. We could throw last minute requests for a dinner reservation + transportation at them for 20 people, and they would make it happen.

Overall, I'd say this hotel is a good choice for couples, or families with older kids that want to go to Tamarindo. If I had traveled there with just my wife, we probably would have had an even better experience. Families with young children might consider going somewhere else.

Room Tip: This would be a great hotel if you are traveling as a couple, or with older kids. This hotel is not...
