We were booked here through our Spanish school and didn't even know where we were staying until a week before. We read the reviews and hoped for the best. I have to say, that while it is not a flashy, waterfront condo, the Hotel Luna Llena was a quaint and authentic Costa Rican experience for us. Are there places in Tamarindo that can make Americans feel like they have never left America? Sure but that is not why we travel. Our 2 kids absolutely adored it here, starting with the delicious Tico breakfast they serve outdoors every morning. There is also a continental choice, which is toast, jam and butter. We tried both but favored the rice and beans with scrambled eggs and yummy juice. It was always served hot and fresh by a very friendly and kind waitress who I believe also cleaned our room.
Our room was a 2 story bungalow, almost like a little tree house. It had a/c on both floors and a small kitchen with a nice sized fridge. The bathroom was very cute with more counter space than I have seen in a lot of American hotels lately. Towels were changed daily and the room was always spotless when we returned in the afternoon. There is a tv but we were in Costa Rica so we never actually tried to turn it on!
Some things to know before you go. The beds are not the kind we are used to and they are very firm. There are both firm and soft pillows available. This did not bother us as we found the beds to be comfortable. Hot water was a bit of an issue with 4 people in one unit. We think it is a solar hot water heater so hot water is available more readily in the daytime. We took a few cold showers. Also, as other reviewers have noted, there are large ants, particularly in the upstairs. We spoke to the owner the first night and he assured us that they did not bite and they didn't. But they are there no matter how much they spray. We got used to them and learned to co-exist. We did not have any problems at all with bugs in the kitchen area or anywhere that we might be eating. The Wi-fi is best if you sit outside of your bungalow, near the pool, which is nice to do anyway. It is spotty inside unless you sit right near the front door.
The staff here is very friendly, even the cats and the dog. I opened my door one morning to find a big iguana staring me down. And there is a howler monkey that is fond of howling pretty early in the morning. Luna Llena is in a nice location, close to a grocery store and within walking distance to the beach and the main strip in town, but back off of the busier roads.
Overall, if you are looking for all of the comforts of a fancy hotel in America, this is not the place for you. But if you would like an authentic Costa Rican eco friendly bungalow where you are always greeted with a smile, the Hotel Luna Llena will definitely fit the bill. Do NOT skip the Tico breakfast.
