A wonderful peaceful beautiful setting and the staff and the service was first class.
Everyone was so helpful from planning daily excursions to pampering your special spa requests. The food was beautifully presented and very delicious! If you had any special dietary requests, they were happily respected.
The staff were always smiling and there was never anything they could not do in order to make your stay special. I personally celebrated my birthday there and the staff made me a special cake at lunch which was so very appreciated
The rooms were tastefully decorated and the bathrooms were great with all the necessary amenities.
The boutique resort was run very efficiently under the watchful eye of Calvin Haskell.

Even after reading all of the rave reviews below, we were still absolutely blown away by Los Altos De Eros, especially the staff. From the moment that Javier picked us up at the airport it was more like visiting an old family friend at their vacation house than it was like staying at a hotel or a resort. The building itself is stunning, the views from anywhere around the pool, spa, yoga studio, or exercise area are all indescribable, although we have posted some pictures that we hope help!

We could have gone out and done plenty of activities, but we mostly lounged around the pool because we had no urge to leave. While we lounged we were never short of water or smoothies (we LOVED the mixed fruit with OJ), and if we had been so inclined, there could have been beer or wine at any time. Again, the staff made the difference; they hit the perfect sweet spot of always being available, but never became obtrusive, and they always seemed genuinely happy to help. We also took advantage of the spa one evening for a couples massage/romantic dinner for two. The massage was pleasant enough, but the views from the spa during the massage and dinner (served in the spa area) were amazing.

When we did decide we wanted to take advantage of the local activities (more on them later), the staff was able to arrange everything for us with local companies that they know and trust, and in most cases they were able to add the fees to our hotel bill, savings us from having to carry loads of cash or our credit cards around.

The food was also excellent. For breakfast the black beans and rice with Lizano sauce were wonderful, I never would have expected to like black beans and rice for breakfast, but it worked! Lunches were also generally very good, we both liked the shrimp ceviche, which was very tangy. The two included dinners were tasty; the beef tenderloin was good, and the blackened fish was excellent.

For activities away from the lodge we took advantage of three; the tour of Palo Verde National Park, a zipline/atv tour, and a surfing lesson. The Palo Verde tour was an all-day trip where we were able to see a lot of wildlife, including lots of different birds, crocodiles, various species of lizards, and two different species of monkeys. On the way back from this trip you stop off for an authentic lunch in the tiny town of Filadelphia (included in the price) which was excellent. We would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a relaxing day. The canopy/atv tour was only a half-day long, but even that was a bit long. The canopy portion, which you can do alone, was a ton of fun, and the atv portion was fun, but too long at 2 1/2 hours in the sun sitting on a hot engine. If we had know to ask they would probably have been able to cut it down to more like 90 minutes, which would have been perfect.

All in all, this was the best vacation we have ever had, and we would go back in a heartbeat. Los Altos de Eros deserves every award that it has gotten (and congrats for winning the Best Luxury Resort in Central America again this year), well done Calvin, Javier, Ari, Annika, and everyone else on staff!

I can't think of a more beautiful place and site to stay in when in the Tamarindo area.We flew into the Tamarindo airport.Don't blink or you will miss it.We were picked up by the Los Altos minivan.Soon we were on a long, bumpy, dusty road leading up to this splendid boutique resort.
The resort is more like staying at an Architectural Digest quality home along with 4 other couples. The maximum 10 guests are attended to by a staff of approx. 25 of the nicest ,friendliest people and resident dog!
The food and drink were excellent, never saw left overs!
Trips were easy to arrange for as well as forays into Tamarindo for a half day of town and beach and in the evening restaurants.
To maximize your stay book early and reserve the Eros suite and do not miss the sunset couples massage and dinner ,you won't ever forget how marvelous it was.
The owner Calvin lives on site and sees to it that every guest is
comfortable and happy. We were with very intelligent and friendly guests ranging from mid 20's to middle age.

I'm so glad we visited (got the recommendation from TripAdvisor's reviews and forums), and hope to return in the future for another truly relaxing vacation. We stayed in a poolside king suite and loved sitting on the loungers on our deck, with a glass of wine, and listening to the howler monkeys at dusk. I enjoyed the fact that the terrific managers took care of all our details and we just needed to show up for the ride to any activity outside the property. Fortunately, the other guests at this small property were wonderful and it was fun shairng stories over breakfast and lunch.

You may not want to stay here if you're seeking anonymity or complete privacy. While it is very relaxing and serene place, and the service is unobtrusive, you will need to interact with other guests. I know some people may not want that on a honeymoon.

Some other special touches include the opportunity to hike with their resident dogs and see some wildlife and a local village. The massages were excellent and I especially loved the cool, fragrant mist they sprayed on my feet before and after the treatment. The yoga instructor tailored the class to suit the students' abilities and you couldn't imagine a more wonderful setting for a morning yoga class. Finally, we couldn't get enough of the fruit smoothies! The staff happily makes as many as you request throughout the day. So cool that I saw one of the gardeners pick some mangoes from their trees to be used. A true treat for us sunstarved and Vitamin C&D starved Chicagoans.

After much research, my husband and I booked a romantic getaway to Los Altos. The majority of previous reviews were so helpful in describing what to expect and what to bring with us. I just want to highlight a few things:
Room: We stayed in the Eros Suite, which is an amazing (and large) room. It is very private! We did not hear any outside noise. We did smell the wonderful meals being prepared when we awoke--YUM :) We enjoyed our company at the hotel so much that we actually decided we would stay in a pool-side room next time we visit. If you are considering this place for your honeymoon, however, the Eros Suite is very appropriate and nice! The bed is a bit hard, but that is the worst thing I can think to say!
Service: The staff is absolutely wonderful. I cannot think of anything that they did not address with class. They spoiled us with constant drinks and snacks, but most importantly, smiles. They are so helpful, but not intrusive. The lovely girls that hold the concierge positions even helped us plan events AFTER we were leaving the hotel. Our drivers were so kind and honest. The spa staff was professional and wonderful too!
Food: We were blown away by the quality and variety of the food we were served. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed!! Yes, breakfast is comprised of similar dishes, but I was comforted by this, and began looking forward to some of the wonderful dishes. My husband LOVED the Lizanno salsa so much- and the staff gave us two bottles as we left! Thanks!! I do not like seafood, and yet, they served a sea bass in a garlic sauce that was fantastic! They also were very kind and accomodating with a food allergy I have. The dinner we had in town at Seasons was absolutely fantastic as well.
Guests: We were so happy with the people that we met at Los Altos! We are going to keep in touch! We found everyone we met to be fascinating. We are very private (and conservative) people, and we did not feel uncomfortable socializing at dinner. During the day, most people find an excursion to participate in, or just lay by the pool. We felt very satisfied with the level of intimacy at Los Altos! We really miss our friends-- hello to Stacy, Pete, Jeremy, and Jennifer!! :)
Spa: We did the romantic dinner and massage one night. We felt like royalty. It was so romantic and fun. Like everyone else before us- we HIGHLY recommend it! The spa is in a breathtaking setting.
Fitness: My husband and I stay in shape and took advantage of Los Altos's opportunities. Most mornings, we took the 3 mile hike around the property with Oso, the sweet house dog (so neat--and difficult at the end!), we also visited the fitness center, and did yoga (both on our own and took the class). I have to say-- I do yoga regularly at home and am a member of a regular yoga class. $25 per person is too expensive for 1 hour yoga class-- esp one taught on a beginner level. We are happy that we participated, but honestly, I pay almost that much for a monthly membership. The views from the ashram are incredible, especially at sunrise or sunset!
Activities: We went to Lolas at the beach, and had a wonderful time there! Note to surfers or people who love the ocean, there are some terrible rocks on one side that will tear up your feet. Please be careful! The scenery is gorgeous and we met Lola! HA! We also took the Blue Dolphin catamaran with Calvin (the owner of Los Altos)'s daughter. It was one of the best excursions we have taken! It is a very nice boat with beautiful views. Great snacks and drinks too! You can snorkel in a nice cove.
We felt so relaxed and privileged to stay in this amazing hotel. We just want to say Thank You to the wonderful staff for making our vacation special. By the way, if you pay in cash, you get 10% off of your room bill (not including the spa, yoga, or any activities you book through Los Altos). We felt incredibly safe and cared for and recommend this hotel to anyone who really wants to relax and be pampered!

Everyone else who has boasted about this property spoke the absolute truth -- it is quite simply the best. My wife and I were looking to relax and de-stress, and I cannot imagine any better place/way to do it than Los Altos. Where to begin . . .

1) The location, lodging, views are fantastic.
2) As good as #1 was, the staff was even better. Never have we encountered as good a group of people -- friendly, helpful in every way, and they did everything with care and a genuine smile. Go out for a walk? When you walked back in the front door, there they were with a glass of ice water to refresh you.
3) Food was excellent -- fresh fruit in abundance, home-cooked meals with a Costa Rican flair. Some of the best quality chicken and beef we've eaten. You can go into Tamarindo for dinners, but the dinners ("bocas") at Los Altos were so good, that we almost always ate there.
4) Spa services were tops. We had massages almost every other day and enjoyed every one of them. Other treatments got rave reviews too.
5) Plenty of day trip options if you wanted; we did one day of "adventure tours" which were fun, although some activities were very "extreme" (ask first!). Other options include photo tours, mud baths, horseback riding, zip lines (whee!) and so on.

The host/owner of Los Altos (Calvin) shows up periodically and is a really great guy who obviously loves what he does and engenders that spirit in all his staff. It's also fun meeting the other guests, (max capacity 10 -- all adults) as everyone is in an understandably great mood.

Before leaving, we booked the same time for 2009 -- it's THAT good. Thanks to Calvin, Ari, Yannina, Anya, and the rest of the Los Altos staff for being the best. We're already looking forward to our next visit!

Don & Karen

The owner of Los Altos de Eros clearly possesses a special kind of talent; the man has created pure magic through a service philosophy that leaves guests wondering if the staff is clairvoyant. At Los Altos de Eros the staff members anticipate and fulfill the needs and desires of guests before guests even realize those needs exist. Perhaps this is because the owner regards and treats his 28 member full time staff like family, and the staff, in turn, treats the guests the same way.

The horseshoe shaped five room villa surrounds a beautiful infinity edge pool overlooking the Pacific and the surrounding jungle, where rolling green mountains fade into a smoky sky. There are howler monkeys in the trees, frogs and lizards roaming the premises, humming birds and clusters of lush tropical flowers. A soothing sense of stillness permeates the premises, relaxing the mind, body and soul. It took us several days to settle into the place enough to understand the magnitude of the sheer bliss we were experiencing. When this realization finally set in, Glenn had a private chat with the owner, who graciously extended our visit by an additional two nights. This was pure luck on our part, as it rare to find Los Alton de Eros not fully booked months in advance.

Los Altos de Eros caters to couples both young and old in search of a romantic, relaxing hideaway with fabulous service, food and amenities. The name translates to mean the heights of love and the majestic views, intimate ambience and extreme serenity of the place fit nicely with the name. Imagine a five room hotel with 28 full time staff members! The staff to guest ratio allows for highly personalized and attentive service leaving guests feeling incredibly pampered and satisfied.

During our five night stay at Los Altos de Eros, we never once felt like we were staying at a hotel, rather a wealthy friend’s private estate. Meals are shared at a large community table in the open air dining area overlooking the pool, allowing guests to interact and develop lasting bonds. There is always a gorgeous centerpiece on the table, usually consisting of fresh flowers and candles. Guests can look on from the dining area and enjoy the tantalizing aromas drifting from the large open kitchen as the kitchen staff prepare the daily meals . The kitchen/dining area flows into a comfortable living room where posh sofas and chairs surround a huge satellite television, striking artwork, a large glass vase overflowing with fresh flowers and diverse artifacts collected during the owner’s many travels. The living area offers a perfect spot for reading, accessing Wi-Fi or simply relaxing and enjoying the stunning views and magnificent Pacific sunsets.

In accordance with the meaning of the hotel’s name, the owner seems to have a penchant for the female body, reflected in his choice of paintings, artifacts and sculptures. Creative renditions of the female breast and torso can be found adorning the guest rooms and common areas. A staircase in the rear section of the living room leads to the Eros suite, a huge romantic hideaway with a large balcony overlooking the mountains and the sea. The other 4 poolside rooms- two king and two queen- are basic, small and comfortable, with large outdoor showers and daily housekeeping service. The bathrooms are well stocked with wonderful shampoos, conditioners, body lotions, body scrubs and other basic essential items like Q-tips and cotton balls.

The staff members at Lost Altos are top notch people; warm, attentive, efficient and highly dedicated to quality service. As previously mentioned, the flawless service at Los Altos de Eros is due in part to the fact that there are 28 full time staff members. A staff to guest ratio such as this is extremely rare in a tiny hotel. Our driver, Javier, escorted us from Captain Suizo to Los Altos de Eros. Javier was gregarious and fun as we alternated between English and Spanish during our twenty minute drive. When we arrived at Los Altos we received a warm welcome from Hannia who immediately gave us a private tour of the property and informed us that a chilled bottle of white wine awaited us in our room. Osa, the resident dog, enjoys barking at the monkeys and escorting guests on the famous hour long walking loop around the scenic and hilly hotel grounds. It is best to take this walk early in the morning, before the sun gets too strong and Osa retires for his mid morning nap.

Hannia, Ari and Yanina virtually run the place, taking care of everything from meal service to travel arrangements and every need in between. At Los Altos de Eros, the service is so impeccable that it borders on ridiculous. There is free daily laundry service provided; guests are instructed to place their dirty clothes in a laundry bag in the morning and the freshly laundered clothes are returned later the same day. Unlimited supplies of wine, beer, soda and bottled water are available to guests free of charge throughout the day. Tropical fruit smoothies, with or without alcohol, are also free and available on request. If guests require assistance with planning a daytime excursion or arranging travel itineraries, Ari is happy to assist with anything and everything from the smallest, most trivial detail to the more time consuming tasks like changes in travel schedules. When we decided to extend our stay at Los Altos two additional nights, we simply handed Ari our original flight information and within the hour she had us booked on a new flight and even reserved our airport transportation. I have never experienced such incredible, flawless service.

Meals are served promptly at 8:30AM, 1:30PM and 6:30PM. However if you miss a regularly scheduled meal due to a daytime excursion or some other factor, the staff is happy to accommodate and prepare a special plate later. Breakfast and lunch are included, and the food is fantastic. Araceli and Jessenia prepare the delicious breakfasts. One day we enjoyed a typical Costa Rican breakfast consisting of eggs, tortillas, gallos pinto, fresh fruit and toast, another day we had yummy french toast and fresh out of the oven, hot and flaky chocolate croissants. Breakfast includes hot coffee and fresh fruit juice. Lunches and dinners are prepared by Zulay, Eliseth, Sauken and Maria. Antonio bakes the croissants and cookies.

My favorite meals at Los Altos De Eros were the lunches; one day we enjoyed chicken casada- a typical Costa Rican meal consisting of chicken, rice, beans and salad. Another day we were served lasagna with garlic bread and another, pasta in a pesto sauce. Seafood themed lunches were usually accompanied by rice and a generous side of ceviche. The portions are large and satisfying and second helpings are readily available.

Dinner is included twice a week at Los Altos de Eros, on Tuesday and Saturday. The dinners are sociable, welcoming and truly enchanting experiences. The evening meal begins with a fabulous salad followed by a main entree accompanied by a variety of side dishes. One night we enjoyed several types of grilled fish; included was the fresh grouper several of the hotel guests caught that morning on a fishing excursion. The Saturday night meal is usually beef tenderloin slow cooked inside a teepe style smokehouse. The meat was moist, tender and bursting with flavor. Guests enjoyed cocktails before dinner and lingered at the community table long after the meal was through, laughing and sharing jokes and travel stories.

Lunch and dinner at Los Altos are always followed by a tempting dessert. I am not normally a dessert person but it was impossible to resist the vanilla ice cream with freshly baked chocolate chunk macadamia cookies or the banana split with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. The meals at Los Altos are home cooked and creatively prepared, always bursting with flavor and served with tender loving care. Ari, Hannia and Yanina never allow a wine glass to go empty or a cleared plate to sit for too long.

On nights when dinner is not included, Bocas (snacks) are available for a reasonable fee. The Bocas consist of a large salad topped with shrimp or chicken accompanied by unlimited wine or beer and followed by a delicious dessert. With the full breakfast and lunch served daily, the Bocas are more than satisfying as an evening meal. Should guests choose to opt out of the Bocas in order to experience dining in nearby Tamarindo, the staff is happy to assist with suggestions, transportation and reservations. The transportation service at Los Altos is prompt and efficient. If you inform the staff of your plans ahead of time, door to door service is easily provided.

The spa is world class and includes a full menu of services ranging from the chocolate body scrub to the four hand octopus massage and the honey oatmeal facial. The spa includes a Jacuzzi, showers and majestic views of the surrounding mountains and jungle. Soothing waterfalls and soft music complete the experience. One evening, Glenn and I indulged in the romantic and highly popular couple’s sunset massage, an experience that Los Altos is famous for. After 90 minutes of a blissful full-body massage enjoyed side by side in an open air room overlooking the mountains, we were escorted to the Jacuzzi where chilled champagne and strawberries awaited us. The staff vacated the spa and left us alone for well over an hour to soak in the Jacuzzi, sip our champagne and watch the sunset. A table for two was already set, where we enjoyed an intimate meal complete with wine, appetizer, main course and dessert. We started with a watermelon salad and then I enjoyed the jumbo shrimp pasta while Glenn devoured the beef tenderloin. By dessert, we were so full we could barely touch the chocolate mousse.

The spa staff includes Marta, Grace, Jessica, Ileana, Haelyn, Hasell, Mariela and Cexni. Members of the staff personally escort guests from the main house to the spa, leaving the other hotel guests green with envy as they contemplate a day or evening of pampering.

I cannot say enough positive things about my experience at Los Altos de Eros. The place is pure paradise, unparalleled by any hotel or resort I have ever visited in my lifetime. I offer much Kudos to the owner of this place as the man has created a very special haven where five star quality and service are delivered in a highly personalized, family oriented manner. I think about this place every day and I cannot wait to return!
