We stayed in the "suite", which is really a one bedroom apartment. It was a great deal for the price, tons of space and immaculately clean. The hotel is located just off the main road that parallels the coastline of Tamarindo. It's comfortably close to the beach (a 5 min. walk, and you're there), but far enough to the main strip to be quiet. The suite is on the top level (second story) and has a huge deck from which you can see and hear the ocean.
I loved the design of this B&B. I'm a modernist at heart, and I love to stay in upscale modern hotels (Conrad Tokyo is one my favorites), and so I fully appreciated every detail in this place... modern eye candy at every turn. Don't expect Mies Van der Rohe here, but I'm sure the owners who designed like that kind of modernism and quality.
The owner, Oliver, was actually out of the country when we booked our trip (last minute) and while we were there. However, he was in constant communication over email (they have free wireless) and was amazingly responsive to every question. The onsite staff didn't speak much English (and we didn't speak much Spanish), so his help was needed in some cases.
The breakfast was delicious (try the pancakes with fresh fruit or the pinto huevos... YUM!). We ate one dinner (chicken kabobs) and they were very good and wonderfully seasoned just like everything we had at breakfast.
The staff had an incredible attention to detail... for example, if they saw we had used all of the towels that day, they'd bring one or two extra the following day... they did this for a few days in a a row until we had hit more than the number we needed to use. It's not like we didn't have enough towels to start, but with a few showers a day and a 2 yr old, extra towels are a good thing). There were lots of little things the staff did for us, too numerous to mention, but it's that kind of attention to detail and service that I would expect out of a fine hotel.
The staff, and Oliver (having a small child himself) was really supportive and helpful with our 2 year old. He suggested lots of appropriate activities we could do. The staff was very friendly to our son, smiling and talking to him whenever they saw him. They even brought toys out for him.
Overall, the place is just wonderful. It's a modernist retreat in lovely Tamarindo with a warm, personal, and friendly staff, delicious food, and great service. I'd recommend this place to anyone, family in tow or on your own.
Oh, and if you like playing tennis, they have two tennis courts onsite free for you to use! They also have two cats and a dog. One of the cats must be the friendliest cat that ever existed. She'll happily curl up in your lap if you let her.
