Toucan Rescue Ranch
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 January 2013

The Toucan Rescue Ranch was our last stop on a 10 days trip through Costa Rica. I booked the guest house for me, my husband, and my mother-in-law based on the reviews here on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed!

My mother-in-law came to CR primarily to see wildlife so reading about the rescue ranch it sounded perfect for us. I will start with the cons because there are so few. We rented a car and since this stop was at the end of our trip and our previous accommodation had very poor internet access we were unable to get good directions. We did pretty well for ourselves getting right to the area but we eventually passed it and couldn't find any locals who knew of the place. Luckily my mother-in-law's phone had reception (she had ATT. We could never use out phones in CR with Verizon) so we called them and got directions, it was fine after that.

The other con is the bit of noise at night. I was fine with my earplugs and they provide earplugs in the guest house but you have to know going in that this is a ranch with many animals like noisy toucans and many neighbors have roosters that crow at 4am. Otherwise it is quite relaxing and quiet. No street noise or other city noise.

The grounds are lovely and it is so neat to be able to walk around and peer into each cages at the various birds like owls, toucans, and macaws, the monkey, the porcupine, the several sloths. You can get right up next to the sloths and watch them climb around. We were so excited to help Leslie prepare the food for the sloths one night and watch her feed the baby sloths milk one morning.

Leslie and Jorge are extremely kind hosts with a wonderful story! The breakfast each morning was very delicious and filling!

For the price and the experience this was an amazing find. I highly recommend anyone interested in seeing animals up close to stay here. It's true all of the animals are in cages, they are not wild. Leslie tries to release them back into the wild whenever possible. Nevertheless, this was probably the highlight of our trip!

Room Tip: There are only two guest houses. The one that is a stand alone building is a little better, there ar...

We stayed at the ranch one night before our departure from Costa Rica and had a great experience. Leslie and Jorge are delightful people and their story about the founding of the ranch and how they care for the birds and animals is truly inspirational. We couldn't stop smiling at the baby sloths, the monkey, Ralph the duck acting like a human part of our tour group, to the toucans, owls, and all the other creatures. The rental house is roomy and comfortably fit our family of five.

From the initial greeting at the gate from Leslie cradling a baby sloth in her arms, to Ralph the duck following us everywhere, to the toucans, monkey, owls, and all the other animals, the not-even-close highlight of our Costa Rica trip. Jorge personally took me to a local tire repair facility to repair our semi-flat tire (for $3). Cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay was.

This rescue ranch is run by a lady and her husband and they truly are inspirational. They have no funding from the government and are completely non-profit, althought it is called the Toucan Rescue Ranch they have rescued many other animals such a sloths, a monkey, several different type if birds and others. The tour is well worth doing and very interesting. They put every inch of energy into caring for the animals and you can see if paying off in the animals. I would thoroughly recommend u go to see for yourself.

We stayed here on our first night of our trip to Costa Rica. We wanted a place that was close to San Jose as we had a flight from San Jose the next morning. When we arrived, Leslie gave us a quick tour and then helped us to order dinner to be delivered. The quaint cottage was big enough to accomodate up to 5 people. It is very apparent that Leslie cares very much about the animals that she has rescued. If we would have stayed longer it would have been nice to see the farm where they use to release the animals after rehabilitation, but since we only had 1 night there, we didn't have time for this. We would recommend this place to anyone looking to stay near San Jose, as long as you don't mind waking up to the sounds of the animals.

We visited the Toucan Ranch to discover something a little less tourist focused about Costa Rica. When visiting the Toucan Ranch it's important to remember that it is a sanctuary for sick and neglected animals; it's not a petting zoo!

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome by the owner Leslie. We spent a good few hours with her discovering how the animals arrive, what the mission of her sanctuary is, and seeing how things had developed over the years. We had a fascinating time, with a really personal and relaxed tour of her enclosures. The animals themselves are all really happy and evidently well cared for; Leslie does a great job of not shying away from the reasons the animals end up here though - demonstrating the before and after photographs. Each animal has a different story and it's so great to see that wherever possible the ones that are well enough are released back to the wild.

If you have a few hours to spare then visiting the ranch is a great way to discover another side of Costa Rica - highly recommended.
