Leslie and Jorge are both wonderful hopitable activists. The place was beautiful, completely surrounded by Costa Ricas wild life and coffee plantations. Visiting or staying/ volenteering at the ranch is a great way to ensure you see some of Costa Ricas amazing wildlife in a place where you know the animals are being treated with nothing short of compassion and love as apposed to some other tourist traps that abuse the innocent animals.

Leslie and Jorge have done something absolutly wonderful for Costa Rican wildlife with the ranch, Constantly taking in ill and hurt animals and nurturing them back to health, and, if possible for the animal to survive, releasing these animals back into the wild.

Thank you so much Leslie and Jorge for an amazing day, I wish i knew about this place before I was in Costa Rica because then I would have planned to stay and volenteer. oh well, next time. Keep up the great work!

Leslie and Jorge are so dedicated to spreading the word of respect for the wildlife of CR-their place is a haven for both the animals that wind up there and any people lucky enough to visit. I've visited the ranch twice now and am so impressed with the level of care, compassion, knowledge and commitment that they pour into the well being of the animals in their care and also into teaching anyone who will listen, how to love the wild animals of CR in their natural habitats and to only keep pets that are more naturally domesticated without harmful effects to their well being. A must see place!!!! Donate too!!!!

I stayed here for several days with my cousin. We had the most amazing time here; it was the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. As animal lovers, we were in heaven. Leslie and her husband Jorge, are the best hosts ever. We will definitely come back. I cried when I left (to give an indication of what a special experience it was) Any animal lover will absolutely be over the moon to be able to see the variety of wildlife here at Toucan Rescue Ranch. Leslie is doing an amazing job helping to save these animals and rehab them. She is so devoted to these animals; it is a beautiful thing to witness! I give the experience 10 stars!! Also, she cooks an amazing breakfast and gives a fascinating tour of the facility. Plus, the accommodations are very cozy and I slept great each night. Do not miss out on this fantastic experience!!!

This was our last and very interesting stop before returning to our sailboats. Leslie and Jorge work very hard to save all of the animals that tend to get deposited on their doorstep. The accomodations, I feel, were in line with what Leslie was offering. If you want to see birds, and other animals, hear how they end up there and why they needed to be rescued this is the place for you. It is up close and personal. This is a place you would visit if you love animals. Breakfast was good and included in the overnight stay. Leslie gives you a tour of all of the animals that are there and provides you with a lot of background, of not only the animals, but how Costa Rica deals with their wildlife.

We went to the Toucan Rescue Ranch on a recommendation from the owner of Casa Bella Rita where we had been staying. Rita set up a tour for my wife and I and to our great surprise we were the only ones on the tour that day. If you want to meet the real Dr. Doolittle go see Leslie on the ranch! Leslie is a former occupational therapist who is, (in our opinion not by her own proclamation) using her knowledge of helping others in a different application which is rehabilitating and caring for every type of animal you could imagine. Don’t be fooled by the only animal name in the title of the ranch being toucan. The list of its residents is long and varied. As we were taken through the ranch we were able to hear the calls of many animals and Leslie was sure to point them out to us. This proved to be a VERY useful tool for the rest of our trip. At our next location in Costa Rica we heard what sounded like frogs croaking and my wife jumped up and said, “There has to be a toucan out there!” We crept to the balcony and sure enough FOUR toucans were in the tree right next to us. Had we not done the tour we wouldn’t have known. Things like this happened countless times on our trip and we were so grateful that fate led us to the ranch for our first nature tour in the country. For people looking for a petting zoo this is not it, but if you want to see a large variety of animals close enough for you to see a sloth’s cute little nose or a monkey's little hands this is the place. You will likely never get this close to the animals in the wild. Leslie will proudly show you every animal and tell you some part of her or his story. It was unreal the way she’d walk up to many of the enclosures and say the animals’ names and they’d come to see her. There is even a duck there that followed us for part of the tour just like a small dog would. When you are there with Leslie you really feel like you are part of her world where everything seems in balance with nature, animals, and humans. Even though the circumstance that brought each animal there may seem sad, they honestly couldn’t have hit the jackpot better than to be at the ranch where the care given to them is excellent and the love and connection between Leslie and the animals is palpable. It is 100% worth a visit to the ranch if you are in Costa Rica. You will be amazed.

We chose the Toucan Rescue ranch purely because it sounded so different from a regular B&B and it was within 45 minutes drive of the airport - perfect for your first night. Leslie and Jorge first and foremost run an animal rescue facility. It is not a zoo and neither is a five star resort - anyone expecting either of those needs to head elsewhere.

What it is is a fascinating place for families with kids who wish to get up close and personal with Costa Rican wildlife. It was the perfect introduction for us (2 families with 4 kids) to the indigenous species that call this beautiful country home. It set the tone perfectly in terms of how "alive" this country is with some really cool creatures. And best of all you are amongst people who truly care about the animals they rescue and are eager to educate visitors about the need to protect the natural environment. We were introduced to Milly the Sloth and several of her sloth friends. Ralph the duck who thinks he's a dog, the amazing kinkajous, macaws, porcupines, hawks, owls, acrobatic squirrel, spider monkey, birds of prey,...... Feeding time was fascinating especially the baby sloth who had to be fed with a medicine dropper. Every question we asked was answered and the tour that is included with the cost of your room is extremely interesting.

The accommodations consist of two family cottages with tile floors, queen bed and bunk beds for the kids. They were clean and comfortable and more than adequate for our needs. We ordered food from the local restaurants because we didn't want to leave. Expect it to be quite noisy at first (animals not traffic) but we all slept fine. The coffee and breakfast buffet was great, and our hosts were friendly and attentive.
We headed North to Arenal, a very scenic drive of 4 hours or so. If you wanted to stay a couple of nights at the ranch there is plenty to do within a relatively short drive. Would we go back? Definitely. Manuel Antonio National Park had plenty of sloths to view through a telescope - at Toucan Rescue Ranch it was way more up close and personal and for our kids a truly memorable experience! Keep up the good work Leslie and Jorge - those toucans need you!

I know everyone gushes over the turtles at Tortuguero, but our visit to the Toucan Rescue Ranch was much better than our turtle viewing experience. We had a personal 1.5 hour tour, with stories about each animal and their situation that required their care. The animals were beautiful, and the hostess was a wealth of information. No place else could we get this close to birds and animals safely. We did not stay at the Ranch, but wish we had.
