“fantastic experience and service!”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

After a very long day of travel from new york, 12+ hours, when we arrived to the Costa Rica Marriott San Jose our experience was perfect. From the warm welcome, to the cold towel and beautiful room with a view it exceeded our expectations from the beginning. The hotel was gorgeous, especially the open air courtyard. Our dinner at Isabella was fantastic with great recommendations and service from Randall! We can wait to go back for our return trip when we fly out of costa rica later this week.

We were so blown away by our stay at the San Jose Marriot in March of 2013 that we happily booked it again for a quick overnight stay in July 2014. While it is still a beautiful hotel, we were not as wowed this time around. We checked into 2 adjoining poolside rooms (one for my husband and me and 1 for our 2 kids, a minor and an adult). When we reached our rooms on the second floor, which, due to construction, entailed going up to the fourth floor, across the hotel and back down to the second floor, we found our room adjoining, but not to the room where our kids were staying. And, while our rooms were on the same side of the hotel as the pool, they were far from poolside. We called the front desk and had to explain that "adjoining" means "connected" not "adjacent." The front desk tried to offer a master suite on a high floor as there were no adjoining rooms available on the ground floor. We appreciated the gesture but politely declined. The other major disappointment was the change in one of the on-site restaurants, Isabella, from a fantastic tapas menu, complete with aged Iberico ham (one of the reasons we booked the hotel) to a restaurant serving Peruvian food with a very ordinary menu. The uninteresting restaurant options prompted us to venture 30 minutes from the hotel for dinner, despite our early morning wake up call. The terrace is still breathtaking, the service still good and the construction will end but please, please bring back the tapas restaurant!!!

This hotel is gorgeous! It has a very Hispanic vibe to it. The architecture, pool and golf course is enchanting! A very nice place to relax and launch around. The view is beautiful and the service was excellent.

My husband and I with our three kids stayed on 3 separate occasions during our latest trip to Costa Rica, using it as a hub as we flew in and out of San Jose International airport to other more adventurous destinations. For such purpose, it really worked.
It is only a 10-minute drive (or about $15-$20 by taxi) from the airport - and if you are driving on your own, you will easily find it if you use a sat nav.
Rooms are spacious and clean, staff is extremely pleasant, the morning buffet is plentiful and delicious (and our children loved having such a varied choice, which we didn't get in the smaller eco lodges we visited in the forest).
The main swimming pool is very nice but the water a bit cold and the pool is not deep (so my 11-year old could touch the bottom throughout).
The Jacuzzi had been a bit overlooked, with lots of insects floating around, but it was promptly cleaned on request.
The gift shop, which I avoided at first, actually has the same prices as other Britt shops - even the one at duty free inside the airport - and many soft toys were less expensive there than what we paid for at La Fortuna near Arenal!
Just as a warning, the property is very often used for local wedding parties and corporate events, but these are kept quite separate from the rest of the hotel amenities and we never had any problem with noise late at night - on the contrary, it gives an interesting insight into the fashion taste of the middle upper local class and you will see more tight lace dresses and vertiginous high heels than you've ever seen!
We found the hotel pretty much as we remembered it from 2008, which was when we had last visited CR.

Room Tip: If you chose a room on the pool side and not far from the lobby, you will have free wifi in the room...

We stayed at this hotel for three nights in July. The hotel itself is lovely, but the views of San Jose at night out of your balcony is gorgeous. We had room 616 which was large for 2 people, had a little bar/snack counter area and the bathroom was large enough for both of us to be in it at the same time. We had room service consisting of a Cuban sandwhich one night and pizza and hummas plate the second. All the food was good. The location of the hotel is certainly different, next to Bridgestone and Firestone factories(?) but the hotel is situated such that you never never see or hear anything but quiet. The location is close to airport and San Jose. The front desk will arrange taxis for you, if you do not have a car. Marriott arranged a taxi for us which was waiting for us at the airport upon our arrival, definitely a gigantic convenience for only $15. The gift shop is as good as any retail shop you will find so go ahead and make your purchases there. Exactly the same prices and selections at the airport or any other Britt gift shop.
The pool and Jacuzzi area is beautiful and the on site Spa is beautiful. We will always make this our go to hotel when visiting Costa Rica again. One more thing..... Jose at the front desk was impeccable in his service to us upon arrival. Fabulous job Marriott!!

Room Tip: ask for a mountain view room.

This hotel has a great location for day trips to other areas of Costa Rica. Such as the Volcano and Hot Springs. The staff here is outstanding. In the VIP lounge the staff there was helpful in telling us of places to visit while on our trip. This was our second stay here and it's a great location to get to the city of San Jose for the day. Outstanding customer service from the front desk to the bellman. The room we had was good size and if you happen to get a room with a balcony like we did, it's a plus over looking the back area of the property. It's also close to the
airport which makes it convent coming in on a late flight or leaving early in the morning.

Room Tip: We had room on the 4th floor facing the back of the property which provided a very nice view with a...

For us this place was not easy to find once we rented a car after leaving the airport-even though it is really not that far from the airport. After about an hour of driving around and asking many different people-most of which had no idea were it was...we finally found it. I had heard finding your way around could be challenging but had no idea it would be this tough. Once we did find the property it took our breath away. The grounds and building are just beautiful being that it is on a coffee plantation. We stayed here on the first and last day of our trip to Costa Rica and loved it here. The rooms are very comfortable. Our room on the first night looked out to the pool area and we could walk out our sliding door and take only a short walk to the hot tub and pool area. On the last night of our vacation we stayed in a suite that was huge with two bathrooms. I thought the gift shop had a really great selection and we bought many of our souvenirs from here. We felt very comfortable here and would stay again!
