“Quiet Oasis”
Reviewed 22 January 2013

Costa Rica was the first trip that my fiance and I had taken together and Cahuita was our first stop. After a wearily long day of traveling we arrived pretty late at the Playa Negra (after 9pm) and Greg was right there waiting outside to welcome us. When you walk through the front gate you are transported into this little tropical garden oasis. The landscaping is beautiful and the whole setting is so peaceful and relaxing! Our room was one of a few set up in the larger building just behind the building housing the front desk. Despite sharing walls we were never disturbed by any noisy neighbors (even with the german shepherds next door!). There was no AC in the room which at first we were concerned about with the humidity being so high (and we live in Houston) but we never had an uncomfortable night. Everything was clean and well maintained. They left us coffee on our patio to enjoy in the mornings and there were always drinks for purchase out at the pool house (very convenient to pick up before a daily hike!). There isn't any food offered in the Guesthouse but there are several restaurants within walking distance and we never had trouble finding something tasty to eat.

Just across the street is the beach which, during our visit was littered with debris from heavy rains (it was early December when we visited) but was still worth exploring. And by night we wandered down the street to a chill reggae bar that had live music. If you're ok with a little bit of walking (which we loved) you can walk to town which is equally laid back and full of life in the evenings. Greg provided us with a map to get to the major places in town - ATM, grocer, bus station - which made things even easier. He even provided us with tips as to better places to visit while on the East coast - which is what led us to take a bus to Manzanillo beach where my fiance proposed! It was a perfect introduction to Costa Rica. I can't say enough good things about this place. I would definitely come back and stay here!

My wife and I spent 5 days with our two-year old son in this beautiful, quiet boutique hotel. The hotel is located about 1 km outside the village Cahuita and can be reached by a dirt road. The complex consists of a building with some apartments and of three well equipped cottages. Entering the gate you find yourself in a beautiful garden with mature fan palms, big trees with iguanas on top and a huge variety of birds, including colibri's! The garden has a lovely pool with a shallow part for little kids.
Behind the gate there is parkingspace for about 6 cars. The place has free wifi and drinks are available (not free of charge). For breakfast, lunch and dinner you can either go to one of the places in the village or you go looking for a table in one of the nearby restaurants. For breakfast we often went to Brigitte's place for these very tasty banana pancakes. So good!
Across the road along the hotel is a wide beach. For those who like sunbathing: don't expect beds and sunshades, it's not that developed.
South of Cahuita is Cahuita National Parc. You can walk through the forest, along the shore with Howler monkeys jumping over your head from tree to tree and birds flying around. It was lovely. Our son loved the monkeys, but he was glad they didn't come close.
People were very friendly and especially towards our blond 2-year old macho man.

Staying in Playa Negra Guesthouse was the best relaxing start of the vacation we could have imagined.

We spent a few days here around Christmas and had a wonderful stay. The owners are very helpful and have good humor. The cottages are clean and crisp, ready to welcome relaxation for the entire family. The beach is right across the dirt road, with great waves for body surfing and though there was wood chip debris in the water it did not keep the kids from spending hours in the surf.
The cottages are close enough to walk into town for dinner and far enough away you do not hear any town noise. There is also a great tree on the next property that is full of monkeys who entertain all day. It was great!

our stay at this hotel matched the other positive reviews for it. the accommodations were very comfortable, the location off the busy path but close enoug to see and do things, and the managers helpful and accessible but not intrusive. I can't imagine a better place to stay at in this area.

Out of all guesthouses we used in Costa Rica, this is by far our favourite. Clean, comfortable rooms, very usable porch in front of rooms, gives privacy and comfortable seats, excellent swimming pool, and greatest garden we've seen in Costa Rica. The owners are super friendly and get out of the way, we stayed on the property far more often then expected.

My husband and I just returned from a two night stay at Playa Negra Guesthouse. We were looking for something small, secluded and peaceful, and it far exceeded our expectations. The grounds are breathtaking, the cottage comfortable and cozy and the owners warm, friendly and helpful. We especially loved the owner's three very friendly German Shepherds who occasionally made appearances.

Playa Negra is just far enough away from the center of town to feel secluded, while close enough to walk to the shops, restaurants and national park (approximately 15 minute walk to town, depending on your pace). We had an absolutely wonderful breakfast at Brigitte's, just around the corner from Playa Negra, serving the best banana pancakes imaginable, in a quirky open air setting.

If you are looking for a town that has a traditional vibe, without the big hotel resorts, this is your place! One note--we were told that things in Cahuita start early, which is true. With the birds, howler monkeys, and locals, don't expect to sleep in. You will, however, experience all the sites, sounds and beauty that Caribbean mornings have to offer!

My husband and me were travelling in Costa Rica for our honeymoon. After arriving in Cahuita we were looking for a nice, relaxing and comfortable hotel and as we found the Playa Negra Guesthouse we really knew that we found the perfect place to stay!!!! We loved to hang around the pool, the owners take care for the beautiful garden, with a lot of nice plants and in the trees we could see a lot of wildlife. The owners surprised us whit a honeymoon present - thanks again :)
We had a great time here and definitly would come back when we are in Cahuita.
