“Beautiful gardens and birds!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2014

Alby Lodge in Cahuita is fabulous! I stayed there recently for a week with beautiful gardens and lots of special birds visit. I'm a birdwatcher and was very pleased at the many birds who visited. Yvonne and Thomas are very helpful. I was late a day in coming and they graciously rearranged accommodations to fit my needs, they brought me a special sliced up fruit with spices that I noticed on their property, loaned me a T shirt to go snorkeling, loaned me a special bird book a guest saved for me as well as other helpful books and called for a national park guide for me who then recommended a great bird guide who I loved. We had a great time together. They organized a snorkeling trip and a cacao tour. All tours and guides they recommended were great.

All the guests who stayed at Alby were very friendly and I spent some time with a Canadian family and we ate together several times and played cards. I loved the loud howler monkeys and the parrots and toucans and spectacled owl who landed on the property. The yard staff and cleaning staff are very friendly. My place was cleaned every day and the palm thatched cabins are fabulous with bed mosquito netting, beautiful wood, driftwood handles and hooks, and raised foundation and roofs made with natural materials and a porch with a chair and hammock are very inviting. A common lodge has a kitchen and sitting area that are very pleasant. Their dogs are also very friendly. I highly recommend staying at Alby Lodge and if I go back to Cahuita I'd definitely do it again.

We stayed there for a week in 2011 and again in 2014. Both times Alby Lodge was the highlight of our trip. The cabins are rustic but clean and charming. The grounds are beautiful. Yvonne and Thomas are gracious and helpful hosts. There is a resident sloth and a troop of monkeys on hand. The cabins are a three minute walk from Cahuitas restaurants and shops and from the national park and ocean but far enough from town that it is quiet. Highly recommended!

Our lodge was peaceful and quiet, with nice neighbours. Yvonne and Thomas made us feel right at home. Everything was clean and tidy, and we didn't even have to leave the property to see howler monkeys and a hummingbird nest. The beds had good mosquito nets (necessary), and there were screens on the windows. But there were significant gaps between the screens and the window frames, so those pesky mosquitoes can (and did) get inside the lodge. Dengue fever is a real problem these days, and there is standing water nearby, so use your bed nets and mosquito repellent.

Room Tip: Check gaps between the screens and window frames. Some cottages may be better than others.

If you read the other reviews you will see mixed feelings about monkeys, and howler monkeys in particular. Well, you're in Costa Rica - howler monkeys are part of the experience! At Alby Lodge you will see howler monkeys (and also white capuchins). And you will hear them. If you haven't heard howlers before and don't like noise while you are sleeping, or a pre-dawn serenade to wake you up, more or less right over your private cabin, this place is not for you. Or, if you are like us and love the racket, you must go here. While we were there over 3 days the howlers were ever-present, and mostly noisy.

Couldn't be better. Oh wait, it was better. We saw a northern tamandua in the parking lot, and one of the owners is an amphibian enthusiast. There were poison arrow frogs in terrariums on the grounds.

Our cabin had a queen and single bed, perfect for the 3 of us. The ceiling fan was enough to keep us cool at night, and the mosquito netting protected the beds. These cabins aren't sealed, which is good to catch the breeze and keep them cool. But you will be visited by ants and other creepy crawlers. That's pretty much a fact in all but the most antiseptic of Costa Rica accommodations.

We had rain off and on during our stay and found the large common area with kitchen perfect for those sharp but usually short showers. We read our books, surfed the net, sipped on cold drinks from the fridge, and visited with a couple of the lodge pooches. We kept our fresh fruit and eggs for cooking breakfast in the fridge and picked delicious ripe starfruit from the trees behind the building.

Town and the entrance to the National Park are a 5 minute walk. We had a rental car which we used to get around. Alby Lodge was a perfect place to base explorations from. And it was a great deal - very reasonable price for what you get. The staff were efficient and friendly and we had "no troubles".

We stayed 3 nights on Alby Lodge. This is probably one of the best deals in Costa Rica. There are only 4 cabinas but all are build with great care and look really stylish. The rooms are kept spotlessly clean. All are equipped with fan and mosquito net. We only used the fan during the day. At night the temperature drops to relatively comfortable levels and you can do without the fan. Be prepared to be woken up by howler monkeys at the crack of dawn.

The cabins are very conveniently located to the village center and beach but still feel removed and quiet since they are located at the edge of the Cahuita National Park. That translates into "many wild animals and plants on the large spacious premises".
The build quality of the cabins is top notch.
Very airy and clean with all the amenities a nature loving traveller's needs. Ivonne and Thomas are gracious hosts that are very helpful in exploring the area in and around Cahuita.

We had a really great stay at Alby Lodges! We loved to chill out in our Bungalow and watch the monkeys climbing around in the beautiful garden!
The rooms are very nice and clean, the rancho is also a great Palace to stay and to enjoy a cup of coffee!
Thanks to Thomas and Yvonne for the hospitality!
