My family and I stayed here in Oct 2011 for more than a week while on a year long sabbatical travelling the world. We stumbled into this place purely by luck as Franco mostly caters to local business people. Franco and his family are Italian immigrants to Costa Rica and it's clear he loves the country and its wildlife as much as any Tico with the meticulous care he has taken of the grounds around the property. We stayed in a little casita (bungalow) and had a family of howler monkeys living within a stone's throw that we could watch for hours right from our front porch. There were sloths in his forest and he's created nice walking trails where you can see lots of the local flora and fauna. When we were there Franco's english was pretty rudimentary (only a bit better than my spanish) but they were very anxious to please and gave us all kinds of local insights with out ever any pressure to upsell.
If you are looking for a typical "resort" pass this one by. The pool is really just a great spot to cool off (it's only about 12' round and maybe 4' deep), the rooms are pretty basic (but very clean) and the cooking facilities are under an awning (outside) beside or behind the casita. But if you are adventurous and are looking to actually experience Costa Rica, how better to get close to nature than have birds and monkeys come up to you while your are cooking dinner outside and listen to howler monkeys hoot everytime a truck came within 2 miles of the place. (It's on the main road and not terribly close to any beach but if you had bikes or a car (like we did), it's just about perfect on the budget. The beaches that you can get to with a short 5 minute drive are some of the best we've ever seen and I'm looking at TripAdvisor because we all want to go back! (And that's after visiting 24 countries all over the world).
We were well spoiled coming here having spent a week at Bio Thermales up close to Arenal (which is another fantastic spot) but these beaches and just the "mojo" of this neck of Costa Rica sealed it for us. If you go, say hi to Franco and his lovely family for us!
P.S. I put the sleep quality at a 3 not because of the place but because of those crazy howlers! The first time you hear them, it freaks you out. They are pretty noisy but we came to love them.
