“Comfortable, well price hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 January 2009

Cabinas Guarana offers nice comfortable rooms for $55. The rooms are basic and brightly coloured with a fan (no A/C) and mosquito net. The hotel is located in the centre of the down but far enough away from any noise. Free internet access is also provided. Had a few issues with the hot water which were sorted out very quickly.

  • Liked — It was cheap
  • Disliked — The hot water was luke warm and the bathrooms were slightly drab

Although we didn´t actually get to stay here, we had an extremely bad experience with them. We called from within Costa Rica to book a room which they said was available for the next 5 days, as we had wanted. The receptionist said, though, that we needed to email our request over the internet, that she couldn´t book it over the phone. Thus, we did this and left for Puerto Viejo the next morning, counting on having this room as it had sounded as we would. When we arrived, the hotel owner accused us of never having called or received our email request. Her receptionist didn´t want to take the blame, but we had talked to her the previous afternoon. She finally admitted she remembered us, but the hotel owner still gave us a lot of attitude and implied that the mix-up was our fault. She did call a ¨friend¨ in order to book us another room, but the other place she got us had an even more nasty owner who gave us loads of attitude. We would discourage anyone from staying at Guarana without further investigation as well as at Jacaranda down the block.

Hotel Guarana is a very cute place. It's in a great location - close to the beach, bars, restaurants, etc...but a few blocks away from all the action so you don't hear the noise. It is kind of a party place...I'd consider it just a step up from a hostel. You get the common rooms where you can meet fellow travelers like a hostel, but with the added convenience of your own room and bathroom.

Although it was a very cute room, I think our problem was trying to fit 4 adults into one fairly small room. The room had 4 twin beds and there was a little extra space for our luggage, so the bed arrangement wasn't the problem. The bathroom, on the other hand, was tiny and didn't feel extremely clean...and we had some ongoing issues getting the toilet to work. But maybe my standards were just higher because we came from a really nice place that was $20/night per person instead of $10/night, but we definitely had the feeling that we got exactly what we paid for... But we're all used to hostels and we thought this place would be fun, so that's why we initially decided to go cheap.

The noise at night was definitely an issue as there were only screens for windows. There were some guys next to us partying what felt like all night...I could hear every word they said loud and clear. But I know this is a place for young people, so I can't complain too much about people having fun on their vacation...it very well could've been us having all that fun... :)

Lastly, I hate to mention this but feel like I should. Although everyone else says the owners were friendly to them, we just didn't get the warm and fuzzies from them. They weren't especially welcoming when we arrived after our long journey to get there. They also weren't very helpful and forthcoming with information when we asked for advice. We had to go back to the room and read our guidebooks. I don't think the staff was rude purposefully.....but everyone knows when you feel welcome somewhere, you will have a much better experience.

  • Liked — The location...proximity to nightlife; the treehouse; the decor
  • Disliked — The bathroom; the staff could've been warmer to us

This charming spot, away from the noise, was the best stop on our trip exploring the eastern side of Costa Rica and Panama. We loved the owner and the camraderie of the other guests. We wish we had stayed longer and will definitely go back. Our patio had a hammock where I could snooze and watch the hummingbirds in the central garden.
There was so much more we could have done in the vicinity, if we had known how much we were going to love it here. As far as we're concerned we could have skipped Panama and it's begger children. Our favorite restaurant was Soda Isma.. Isma is wonderful and her food is a bargain and extremely tasty. We had similar food at other restaurants for twice the price and it wasn't as good!

  • Liked — quiet and friendly
  • Disliked — wished we'd had 2 hammocks :)

we arrived in Puerto Viejo with no reservations, knowing there were many places to stay. We saw a woman sitting and reading outside Guarana and we asked how her stay was. She was very content and loved the fact that you could use the kitchen, enjoy free coffee and internet all day,and it was a warm safe place. The owner Paola was such a nice guy and the staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our own hammock and porch as well as the common area with couches ,tables and chairs. Being able to cook and have the use of a refrigerator was a real plus. We would certainly stay again.

  • Liked — the feeling of being in a home
  • Disliked — it was all acceptable

This sweet little place is perfect. Lovely rooms, kitchen, computer, friendly and helpful staff make you feel right at home. Best is the way high tree house in the middle of the property, and proximity to all things wonderful without being inundated by the action when you want peace and quiet. Try it, you´ll be glad you did.

We loved staying at the Hotel Guarana the first week we were in Costa Rica! The little artful touches are charming and the mosaics in the reception area were beautiful. Everyone was very friendly and helpful! And it was fun going up to the treehouse to check out the view! Being able to use their wireless internet was great too! For our 2nd week we went to the Pacific side but it rained so hard we called the Hotel Guarana and asked if we could come back! They said yes, and gave us our old room back! It felt like coming home! We used their laundry service which was convenient...all our clothes were wet and really needed a wash! We loved using the communal kitchen with each room getting a little cubby shelf to store dry goods in as well as use of the Fridge! We would definitely go back to the Hotel Guarana!

  • Liked — Reasonable rate and artistic surroundings
  • Disliked — The can opener in the kitchen was hard to use.
