“Lived up to high expectations!”
Reviewed 2 July 2013

My wife, two children and I stay at Geckoes Lodge and loved our experience. The house is beautiful, the pool was refreshing and the jungle surrounding us reminded us everyday how lucky we were. My wife and children travelled in Costa Rica for a month and joined them the last week at Geckoes. I looked at around 200 places before finally choosing Tom and Zoe's wonderful place. Initially, I was worried it was "too romantic" for our family. It was romantic but worked well for our entire family.

We rented a golf cart (Tom and Zoe organized it for us) and travelled all around the coast and enjoyed the beaches and fantastic food in the area. We shopped a little in Puerto Viejo (2 KM away) and travelled down to the Jaguar Rescue Center. (1 KM).

The place was private, had a great kitchen and a grill next to the pool. We loved using the hammocks and reading while listening to the monkey's in the morning (sometimes a little too early for me :). If you are thinking about this area of Costa Rica, this is your place. I looked high and low before I booked and while I was there. Our family loved the place and would visit again in a heartbeat.

Where to begin? My husband and I were looking for a honeymoon that struck a balance among luxury, relaxation, adventure, and excitement. We happened upon Geckoes through browsing the web. We can't remember how exactly we got to Geckoes' website, but it must have been fate as we couldn't imagine a honeymoon anywhere else. When we arrived at Geckoes Tom greeted us with a smile as Charlie and Fred (their Norwegian Ridgeback dogs) gave us their best impression of guard dogs. Together our welcoming committee guided us through the winding paths to our future home for the week at La Casa del Bosque. We were not disappointed with our accommodations to say the least - in fact, it was romantic, secluded, and breathtakingly beautiful. Tom and Zoe supplied us with fresh fruit, eggs, milk, and even champagne to celebrate our honeymoon! Our adventure had begun.. With a fully equipped kitchen and grill, we planned to prepare a majority of our meals there- this was not only fun but also a good money-saver for us and allowed us to splurge on occasional dinners/lunches out. We spent the rest of the night enjoying our new paradise - a plunge pool just to ourselves (this is a gem - more like a mini-pool that is private, clean and felt amazingly good in hot tropical weather), hammocks to read in, chairs to lounge in, and an endless supply of new animal noises and sightings to keep us busy for hours. We stayed at both La Casa de Bosque and La Casa de Bromelia at Geckoes: Both are beautiful. La Casa de Bosque is more secluded and intimate- probably the choice for honeymooners like us . La Casa Bromelia is larger, with a bigger kitchen and set on the side of a hill so you feel as though you are among the trees. Both houses enable you to feel immersed in a tropical rainforest but with all the high end luxuries of any 5 star hotel. There was always a filled bottled water reservoir, as well as a gas stove and blender to whip up any frozen smoothies you could want. The staff at Geckoes was amazing - Tito and Jose do an incredibly good job cleaning the living spaces and landscape daily. Tom and Zoe are two of the most welcoming and down to earth people we have ever met- in fact visiting with them was a highlight of our trip. They make themselves available all the time, anytime, for any questions you may have or situations you find yourself in. They also provided us with a pre-programmed cell phone for the week with any numbers we needed (Taxis, restaurants, guides, spa, etc).
Although we spent all of our evenings at Geckoes lodge enjoying the amenities and seclusion we were active during the day and rented bikes to explore various beaches, Puerto Viejo, go on a chocolate tour, waterfall tour, a yoga class, surf lessons, etc.
Bottom Line: Geckoes is luxury in the rain forest. Tom and Zoe helped create an experience we loved. It was a once in a lifetime trip- although we plan to be back:) We now know the meaning of the phrase Pure Vida..because we lived it!

The Geckoes Lodge is made of of two different rental properties. We stayed at the one bedroom Casa Del Bosque for four wonderful nights.. It is perfect for a couple. The living area and kitchen are totally open to the surrounding forest. At night you can hear all the different animals speaking to each other. It is almost like a sound machine turned to high, it's that perfect. We saw many hummingbirds and at night, a bat. A couple evenings we ate in. There is everything you need to cook nice meals if that is what you want to do. There is a large Island with two bar stools to sit. We had quite an experience getting to the house. A large tree had fallen across the road. Tom and Zoe had to meet us at the tree, help us climb over, and then brought us the rest of the way to the house. The living area has a nice two person wicker couch, a rocking chair, and then a wooden table and chairs. There is no tv so make sure you bring some good books with you. My husband found the books provided very entertaining so if you forget there are some there. There is a book at the house that tells all about the area. The restaurant guide was spot on and so was the map and description of the closest beaches. The owners provide you with a very easy to use cell phone. There are many numbers already programmed in which made it so simple to call local places. We used Taxi Renee. He was wonderful. He was always ready, willing and able to drive us anywhere we wanted to go. We just told him what time to be back and he was there. Since this is a rental home you need to bring your own shampoo, conditioner. The house does come with liquid soap which was nice. At night we were visited by wild creatures!!! Just kidding, it was the owners house cat. It was just a surprise to see a house cat come out of the rainforest. We did not see any monkeys but we could hear them at certain times of the day. There are some big bugs around but nothing is going to hurt you. The house provides two beach towels and a blanket. You can rent chairs at the different beaches. Our favorite beach was Punta Uva due to the soft sand and surf. You are provided with one towel, and one hand towel per person for the bath. The shower is a overhead waterfall type. The toilet is open to the rest of the bathroom. If you shut the doors to the outside and bedroom then you do get a little privacy. I loved the sinks! They had frogs and geckoes on them. We saw many little geckoes running around outside. They seemed to like the salt water from our bathing suits. The plunge pool is very refreshing. It has two reclining lawn chairs to sit out next to the pool. It's just the right size and depth for two grown people. The bedroom is very large. I am not sure what size the bed was, could have been a queen. There is a desk with a chair in the bedroom as well. You can open the entire bedroom to the outside as well. Do this during the day to get the cross air but close back at night so you don't get mosquitoes. The bed has netting around it but you really don't need it. The couple that live on the property, Jose and Tita come in once a day to freshen things up. I would like to come back and visit again. If I bring my nephews though or anyone other than my husband then I would have to rent the bigger house. The house is really meant for a couple. We really enjoyed our stay. It was so relaxing. Tom and Zoe are there is you need them but you never feel like there is anyone around. It's very private. We toured the Jaguar Center, it is a must do! We also had dinner at Malbec. You can read my review of that here on TripAdvisor. Tom and Zoe, be prepared to host us again!

First, let me start by saying this is the first time I have ever traveled out of the US. My husband and I flew first class through United and had an amazing flight. After a long flight, we arrived in San Jose and then took a private transfer to Puerto Viejo, Limon. Tom met us out at the gate to the property and led the car in to show where we were staying. After such a long day and over 18 hours of travel, it was so comforting to not have to do anything. Tom and Jose brought our luggage up to Casa Bromelia, where we stayed for the first two nights. Instantly, our bare feet on the immaculate hard wood floors were great to the touch. Tom and Zoe had a basket of fresh fruit, fresh baked bread, champagne, and essential items in the refrigerator. Not having the energy to move much, this was a lifesaver. Tom explained that at about 5am, we would hear what sounded like King Kong, but rest assured it was only the howler monkeys. We settled in for the night in a welcoming bed with mosquito netting, adding to the romantic luxuriousness. At about 5am, we heard King Kong, realized what it was and went back to bed. Now being fully rested, we were able to experience the grounds and the surrounding towns. The plunge pool was perfect to sit and relax. Jose takes such pride in the pools and it shows as they are exquisite! The rest of the ground were as beautiful, the whole team takes such pride in the entire area. I don't like bugs, and I loved watching the Golden Orb spider spin her web. Taking a walk along the trail and watching the howler monkeys play in the trees was fascinating! To see all of these creatures in their natural element, awe inspiring. To get around town we used Rene's taxi, highly suggest. He made the trip quite memorable. Understands English well enough to take you where you need to go, reasonable prices, and is always there when you need him, plus he is absolutely delightful and funny! For the most part we walked through town every day, eating at various establishments. Lazlo's by the pizzeria, if you want fish, you will get fresh fish and a lot of it. The pizzeria brings a feeling of home (and they deliver to Geckoes if you desire). Bread and Chocolate had a great Jerk Chicken sandwich and waffles were yummy too! Oh, and the chocolate, how could we forget that?? The truffles....oh you want more! El Refugio is a perfect quaint, romantic restaurant with great, delectable food choices. We did a bit of shopping at the various grocers, Old Harbour, Mega Super, and Pirripli and they had everything we needed or wanted. On one of the sunnier day's we went on a fishing trip with Wahoo Fishing and Tours, Captain Pino and Nick. First time ever on a boat in the ocean and it was perfect. We caught so many fish and a few sharks. Oh, and an amazing sunburn (forgot to put on the sunblock we were having so much fun!) Nick and Janet provided sandwiches, beverages, and a few snacks, which helped because we didn't have to bring anything but ourselves. We also visited the Jaguar Sanctuary and the Sloth Sanctuary, they were quite fun in their own rights. We finished our stay at Casa del Bosque. I still vision myself there, lying in the hammock, doing absolutely nothing except enjoying the noises of the jungle and the rainforest. Each of the houses had games provided, which we hadn't thought to bring anything with us, so it worked quite well. The best part, was not having to do anything. Tom and Zoe thought of absolutely everything to make our stay as relaxing, romantic, and as enjoyable as they could. Jose takes such good care of the grounds, and his wife, Tita, kept the Casa's in immaculate condition. Overall, while this was my first out of country experience, I have traveled to many places in the US. Staying at Geckoes is Pure Romance and worth every penny and every minute of your time. We cannot wait to return! Pura Vida!

Our 9 nights at Geckoes Lodge were spectacular! The property itself, the owners (Tom & Zoe) and the caretakers exceeded our expectations in every way. We tried to do as much as we could without missing out on just hanging around the house amongst the wildlife. Extra props for the bed linens guys!

...and I don't mean at the end of our stay, it was difficult to leave the house each morning! My 13 year old and I had a rare mother/son escape to Costa Rica, and taking advice from all the emphatic reviewers here, chose Geckoes Lodge. It exceeded our expectations, and those were already high! Everything everyone has already said here is true. The setting is extraordinary, (toucans flying past, howler monkeys frolicking in the trees above, hummingbirds flitting past exotic blooms), the hosts warm, welcoming, thoughtful and generous, the location perfect for exploring this beautiful part of Costa Rica. It is a ridiculously romantic place, rather wasted on the two of us, but we had excellent fun snorkelling and zip-lining and hiking and riding bikes, and I'll just have to return with my partner!
Thank you, Tom and Zoe, for creating such a beautiful refuge from a seemingly interminable New York Winter!

We recently enjoyed almost ten days in Casa del Bosque, one of Tom and Zoe's two beautiful guest houses. As everyone has said before us, their warm hospitality, helpful tips, and kind gestures made us feel very comfortable and cared for. They have created a wonderfully private paradise in the rainforest. You could not ask for better accommodations and you certainly can't beat the magnificent setting. We will definitely recommend Geckoes to others in the future. Thank you Tom, Zoe, Tita, and Jose!

Room Tip: Casa del Bosque is the right house for a couple with one gorgeous bedroom and a small, but lovely pl...
