Geckoes Lodge is amazing! We stayed in the 1-bedroom house during the first week of August 2010. I was somewhat wary of what the house and the premises would look like going in (I've fallen prey to the creative photography some places use in advertising their properties), but was blown away when I found that the house and the property were even more beautiful in person than they were online.
The house had everything we needed. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, cooking utensils, a sink, fridge and stove (well, and the bottle of wine they give you when you arrive). The living/dining area has a couch, chairs and two hammocks, and the bedroom and closet have ample room. As important, the house was spotless, with housekeeping coming in daily to tidy up.
The biggest difference between Geckoes and other resorts we've stayed at in the past is the owners. Tom and Zoe really care about the property and your experience in Costa Rica. They're more than happy to sit down with you over a beer or glass of wine and help you plan your stay - things to do, places to see and eat, and reputable tour companies in the area.
Overall, we had a great time at Geckoes, and we can't wait to go back!
Travel tip: if you plan on venturing outside of Puerto Viejo or plan on traveling at night (it gets dark around 7 pm), do yourself a favor and rent a car. I recommend a small 4x4 (large cars are hard to maneuver in San Jose and on the narrow roads in town) like a BeGo.
