“Had a Wonderful Time at Geckoes Lodge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2010

Geckoes Lodge is amazing! We stayed in the 1-bedroom house during the first week of August 2010. I was somewhat wary of what the house and the premises would look like going in (I've fallen prey to the creative photography some places use in advertising their properties), but was blown away when I found that the house and the property were even more beautiful in person than they were online.

The house had everything we needed. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, cooking utensils, a sink, fridge and stove (well, and the bottle of wine they give you when you arrive). The living/dining area has a couch, chairs and two hammocks, and the bedroom and closet have ample room. As important, the house was spotless, with housekeeping coming in daily to tidy up.

The biggest difference between Geckoes and other resorts we've stayed at in the past is the owners. Tom and Zoe really care about the property and your experience in Costa Rica. They're more than happy to sit down with you over a beer or glass of wine and help you plan your stay - things to do, places to see and eat, and reputable tour companies in the area.

Overall, we had a great time at Geckoes, and we can't wait to go back!

Travel tip: if you plan on venturing outside of Puerto Viejo or plan on traveling at night (it gets dark around 7 pm), do yourself a favor and rent a car. I recommend a small 4x4 (large cars are hard to maneuver in San Jose and on the narrow roads in town) like a BeGo.

We had the most fantastic week at Geckoes Lodge. Everything exceeded expectations. We couldn't have asked more from our holiday in Costa Rica. The lodges were exceptionally clean, well decorated and had a homely feeling to them. The kitchen was full fitted and it was great fun cooking with the noises of the monkeys and other wildlife in the background!

The grounds that the lodges are set in are truly beautiful. You really feel as though you are in the middle of the rainforests with huge banana plants and such like growing outside your bedroom window.

Stunning beaches near by. We hired bikes for the week to get around that way. I highly recommend trying out the zip wire canopy trip and surfing at Cocles beach - both great fun.

Zoe and Tom were highly hospitable and have a great knowledge of the local area which came very handy indeed.

We will definitely be returning!! 5 star trip!

The most wonderful part of our vacation to Costa Rica was our stay to Geckoes Lodge (Casa del Bosque). The house is spectacular in every single detail. We have enjoyed every moment spent at the house. Surronded by forest felt magical. The words will not be able to describe the luxury and privacy of this wonderful place.
Thank you very much Zoe and Tom for your hospitality and for sharing this haven with us. Thank you for having given us the chance to meet and spend some time with you. Thank you Tita and Jose for your hard work at Geckoes Lodge.
We wish you all the best and see you soon.

staying at geckoes was the best hotel/lodge experience i have ever had. the room was beautifull, the property and landscaping is immaculate. the kitchen has everything you will need, we didn't go out to eat often because it felt like home.
the location is great, 1 kilometer or so off the main road, quiet. we were able to ride bikes to all the places we wanted to go

After reading many reviews, looking at different hotels, lodges and bungalows in the area we decided on Geckoes Lodge for our honeymoon in Puerto Viejo...and I'm so happy we decided to stay on Tom & Zoe's amazing property. I can truly say the casa and the grounds were even more amazing in person than in any of the pictures and we were floored from the very beginning at the hospitality and the uniquely beautiful casa (truly like something out of architectural digest) at Geckoes. Our honeymoon was unforgettable in so many ways and so much of it is owed to Tom and Zoe and their amazing property. Yes...we did have some bugs to contend with, you are in the rainforest after all, but everything was kept super clean and you simply got used to the fact that you were really part of nature in this setting. I definitely recommend renting mountain bikes as we did to get from the house to the main road and then all around town and to the different beaches, it's the best and healthiest way to get around in my opinion in addition to walking. Definitely bring a flashlight for nighttime as it gets dark and take advantage of the laundry service to dry your clothes as some things just won't dry even hanging up outside because it can be too damp. There really is NO place like Geckoes in the Puerto Viejo beach area. I checked out some of the other places we were considering while we were there and I felt 100% that we made the right decision in staying at Geckoes for our honeymoon. This is your own house, not part of a hotel or chain or hostel or anything like that...it's as if you had friends in Costa Rica and they let you stay at their beautiful second vacation home...truly a one of a kind, amazing experience! I can't say enough good things about Geckoes and Tom & Zoe...hoping to return sooner rather than later!

We were fortunate as we are one of the few people who have stayed at Geckoes that stayed in both properties in the same trip. I fell in love with this place online, but the one bedroom was taken. Tom, who is one of the proprietors was most agreeable offered the two bedroom Casa Bromelia for three nights and then offered to move us to Casa del Bosque. We were thrilled.

After a long and harrowing journey, made up long flight delays and rainstorms, we arrived and were greeted by Tom and Zoe, along with Fred, Charlie and Bliss ( their lovely dogs). They gave us a hosted beverage and from then on out that was the nature of the stay. If you were to order the perfect hosts, who have charm, humor and attend to every little detail it would be Tom and Zoe ( they know all the restaurants, local do not miss tours and best beaches. Couple them with Jose and Tita who tend to the homes and grounds and you have a cannot miss combination.

Casa Bromelia is gorgeous and has an open feel hovering above the incredible grounds. Casa del Bosque could have a star role in a Nicholas Sparks book or movie. The placement of the home lends to total privacy and the bedroom, with its white linens and open format looking onto the ground is the perfect honeymoon abode. This is of course only enhanced by the howler monkey, and his troop of 1o or so girls, that he serenades each morning. We miss all this and more.. if you always dreamed of Costa Rica.. this is your place!!!!

We were only able to stay 6 nights but plan to return for a longer stay soon. In describing the experience as that of eccentric, it has to be similair to taking an African safari and spending the evenings in a 5 star hotel. Tom and Zoe are excellent hosts arranging activities when needed while maintaining privacy always. Puerto Viejo is a fun village and no doubt full of night life. As a retired police officer we never felt threatened and were treated like guests every where we went.

The only downfall I see is the time spent travelling. From Colorado we spent 1 day flying into San Jose and the majority of the next driving. If I could change any thing it would be possibly flying a small aircraft into Limon or possibly flying on the red eye into San Jose and then make the drive to Puerto Viejo?
