“Not the first place to go....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2011

I was part of a major group, and we all had a blast! The landscaping and staff were definitely perks (Manuel did everything in his power to accommodate all of us at once)! The location is out of the main portion of PV, but that's actually a GOOD thing! Right on Playa Cocles, and behind the Awesome Tasty Waves bar, how could you go wrong? I didn't like the end of our stay, it was a bit hectic and some charges were made for 'lost towels' that may not have been too factual. All-in-all, they did amazing for our entire group (over 40 peeps), the maintenance issues put a damper on things more than the vibe and personnel. Go there for an affordable great location, but keep out of the dorms if you're not sharing with your entire crew.

Room Tip: Keep outta the dorms, you'll be pimpin' in privacy!

My wife and I got married in Puerto Viejo in August. The wedding was on the beach right across from Cabinas el Tesoro (in front of the island) and the reception was on the premises. About 40 of our family and close friends stayed with here with us, and we couldn't have picked a better spot. The location is great--it's on the beach, far enough outside of town to be a little more 'tranquilo' but close enough to be convenient. Riding a bike is a great way to get around PV, and you can rent a bike right from the reception and be in town in less than 10 minutes.

If you're a surfer, want to learn, or just want to spend a lot of your time relaxing on the beach, Cabinas el Tesoro is a great place to stay, since it's right across the street from Playa Cocles--it's the nicest beach around for miles and usually has nice waves breaking on sand, so you don't have to worry about the reef.

The landscaping around the property is beautiful, it really feels like a tropical jungle paradise. But the best part about Cabinas el Tesoro is the people. Manuel is a great guy, super chill and always eager to help out with whatever you need. The rest of the staff are great too.

All in all, it's a great place in a great location for a great price.

cabinas el tesoro is a real treasure!!!
nice and friendly... the new management is a real improvement!!!
the beach is really close. Puerto Viejo is close as well, but not to close!! so there is peace & quiet, surrounded by jungle...
Manuel keep up with the good work!!!!

It has been a nice surprise, pass by this hotel on the coast, close to Playa Cocles and find out that it has been completely renewed and now is under a different management.
Since you get in through the path you have the feeling to be inside the jungle and all the colors of the Cabinas and the painting in the reception welcome you in the Caribe.
My room (luxory) was equipped with air conditioning an TV: everything was clean and personnel carefully looking at customer's needs.
Bicycles can be rented at hotel and allows a short ride along th ocean to downtown.
Or if you have your car, it can be easily accomodate in a private parking inside, watched by security during the night.

We stayed at Rockin Js for a couple of nights but hated the vibe and immediately changed to El Tesoro by request of some of the locals. Manuel, the fellow who owns the joint, treated us too kind. Let us use his personal computer and personally greeted us and helped us with our groceries. Ask him about his story and he will gladly have a wonderful conversation with you. The rooms were clean and the SHOWERS WERE HOT!
Make your way down and give it a try.
Plenty of yoga around and right next to tasty waves.

Cabinas el Tesoro is definitely the place to stay if you want to be away from the busier night life of Puerto Viejo, but still close enough to come and go as you please... It's right on the main strip, across from the beach, and next to a great yoga studio that also just started up zumba and hip-hop classes.

I traveled to Playa Cocles alone, but had formed a family of locals, fellow travelers, and even dogs (!) by the time I left. Charlie is amazing and will take care of anything you need and Tasty Waves is one of the best spots to hang out and chill or play pool and/or dance, especially on Taco Tuesdays! Make sure to ask for some Guara!

I stayed in the surf lodge & it was super cheap and comfortable. It's not a 5-star resort.. you're in the jungle of Costa Rica, so there will be bugs; but it's the closest thing to paradise I've ever known and will certainly be staying there many times to come!
