“Best Hotel in Puerto Viejo”
Reviewed 30 December 2011

We had an unbelievable experience staying at the Hotel Blue Conga! The true stars of the show were our hotel managers, Marise and Pierre, who went above and beyond our expectations to ensure that our vacation was one we would remember for a lifetime.
The hotel itself was lovely and clean, exactly as pictured on its website. We stayed in the King Floral room on the second floor. The rooms were screened at the top to provide venting and kept out pesky bugs and mosquitos. An unexpected perk we learned upon arriving is that the water from the hotel faucets is drinkable, since it comes from their own well. We always had plenty of hot water for our showers. Though the rooms are not air-conditioned, an overhead fan helps circulate air in the evenings. Our balcony overlooked their beautiful garden containing a variety of native plants. It was wonderful to watch hummingbirds sip nectar from the red flowers growing right outside our room in the mornings. Or lie in the hammock and blissfully listen to the occasional afternoon thunderstorm while the scent of Ylang Ylang gently wafted in the air. The hotel location could not have been better. It was about a 5 minute walk before you reached the edge of town, and slightly over 10 minutes walk to the nearest beach, Playa Cochles. We walked nearly everywhere, although biking to farther locations such as Punta Uva was also easy and enjoyable given the flat terrain (and for reference, we are not athletes or cyclists). The atmosphere was very quiet and peaceful, a nice haven away from the noise and excitement of town.
Marise served as our home base at the hotel, always there to answer our questions or schedule us for the activities we requested. The tours she booked for us were all fantastic, and included the Jaguar Rescue Center, zipline canopy tour, chocolate tour and snorkeling. Her restaurant recommendations were spot on, as well!
Pierre was our adventure guide! He drove us to Punta Uva (a gorgeous beach nearby) and Cahuita National Park, where he showed us how to look for the animals in their native habitats. While there, we saw howler monkeys, sloths, iguanas, a toucan, white-faced monkeys and bats. On another excursion he took us on a remote waterfall hike located in the BriBri community, explaining the culture and history of the BriBri on the way. Pierre did all of this out of the goodness of his heart, and was an absolutely amazing guide for the different aspects of the town and jungle.
Each morning we awoke to a delicious breakfast that they had made. To give you some examples, on one day we had crepes with bananas and nutella, fresh fruit, and a piece of cheese. On another, a vegetable omelet, bacon, toast with butter and jam, and more delicious fresh fruit. Orange juice and coffee accompanied each meal.
In short, we made friends with several other tourists in Puerto Viejo, and their jaws all dropped when we described the measures our hotel managers had taken to make our stay memorable. Someday, when they have their own hotel, we will plan another adventure back. Thank you again for everything, Marise and Pierre! Pura Vida!

Traveler's Note: We read a lot of different opinions before we came about crime and safety in Puerto Viejo. While you should always use common sense and keep your valuables safe, not once did we ever feel threatened or unsafe (including when we would walk back to the Blue Conga at night).

Great location, just minutes to the center of town but far enough to be peaceful and quiet. Your hosts Pierre and Marise will bend over backwards to insure that you are comfortable. Great recomendations for activities, restaurants, and transportation. Delicious breakfast with an interesting variety from day to day. The rooms are clean and tidy with good ventilation and nets for the beds. Keep the doors closed and you will not need the nets! You are in the jungle man! All in all a terrific value.

This was our first visit to Puerto Viejo and to Costa Rica. The Blue Conga is located fairly close to the center of PV and is certainly within walking distance (we mostly drove around).

Pierre and Marise are Quebecois expats who came and fell in the love with PV. They are very passionate about the area and what it offers to both residents and travelers. Pierre personally took my wife and I to go see some hidden away spots around Punta Uva and we spotted some sloths and monkeys that are literally just in the trees next the beach, as well as breathtaking viewpoints by the water. They work hard to ensure that every guest comes here and gets the most out of their experience with the area.

There are several spaces for guests to park their cars and the complex closes the perimeter fence at night. There was fairly reliable WiFi in our room. A delicious breakfast was served everyday when we came downstairs, and served in a picturesque and magnificently tranquil and airy setting. Pierre makes some pretty decent crepes! (A side note - I've never had a bad breakfast from any bed and breakfast / hotel run by a French speaking person...maybe I'm on to something here...)

Like many rural places that we've stayed in, be prepared to "sleep with nature". There will be insects. There will be animal noises (I don't mean the nighttime human variety). There will be roosters giving a wake-up call in the morning. But to me, that is all (mostly) part of the charm of a place like this. My wife is absolutely terrified of insects, but spraying a few strategic spots in the room with insect repellent and all is well.

Room Tip: The second story seems to be a bit more immune from nearby noises.

In october we spent 7 nights at Blue Conga. We were 26 persons and had all the rooms in the hotel for ourselves and really enjoyed our stay.
Breakfast was served from 7.30 but it was no problems getting it earlier. Fresh fruits, juice, coffee toast and either pancakes or omelette.
Me and my family stayed in a room och second floor and had a big balcony while the rooms downstairs had verandas. Some say the rooms are nicer upstairs. from our balcony we could se squirrels, hummingbirds and lots of other nice birds. At night you could hear the monkeys shouting.
The location was pretty good, to Cocles beach it was a 10-15 min walk and in to the city center also 10-15 min but in the opposite direction. A small supermarket was only 2 min walk from hotel and the closest bar and restaurant only a few minutes walk.
Since we had our kids (4 and 6 yrs) we would have preferred a little bit closer to the beach and also a restaurant at the hotel because they fall asleep early but for adults it is perfect location and there are many restaurants nearby.
The owners, Pierre and Marisse was very helpful and Pierre even took the us to different sightseeings (botanical garden, cocoa plantation, rescue centar) in his own car and acted as a guide. Pierre also helped us order pizza take away and we could all sit in the rancho and eat. They even let us borrow their fridge to keep our beer cold! Very, very friendly and helpful!
If we go back we would definitely stay there again!

This place is close to town and is clean and comfortable. The managers make a great breakfast and know the town well. Simple rooms with a little sitting area outside with a hammock. Would stay there again.

We stayed in sept 2011 during a three week trip in Central America. On the positive side the location was very quiet and in a lovely garden. Our upstairs room had a poor shower with cold water night and morning, no soap, and one glass in the windowless room. Ventillation was good with insect screens. The walk to town is fine by day but we met a traveller who had a bag snatched in the dim stretch of street outside. Some taxis are available though. Pretty forgettable.
